Birdie Stitches

Birdie Stitches Block #5

Birdie Stitches Block #5
And we are on to the May block–yay!  My birthday month…and so far my fave block, however, wait until next month….I think it is pretty stellar. =p  You’ll have to ignore my shoddy ironing job–I hadn’t taken off the blue marking pen & I didn’t want to have a permanently blue birdie–so, he only got a light press.  No worries, though–it’s still a cute block…wrinkles and all!
Birdie Stitches Block #5 12.5" x 12.5"

Block Construction(All blocks will be constructed in the same manner):

Center square: 8.5″ square

 Border Squares: (20) 2.5″ squares

I like to assemble the block before doing the embroidery work–it’s just a little bit easier to hoop it up.  Sew together 2 sets of (4) 2.5″ squares–these strips will measure 8.5″long–sew one set to the top and bottom of the 8.5″ center square.  Sew the remaining 2.5″ squares into two sets of  6.  These will measure 12.5″ long–sew one strip on each side of the block.  And Voila! a 12.5″ square block all ready for embroidery.  You will find the embroidery pattern below in pdf format.

 Birdie Stitches Block #5

You’ll notice that I opted to leave the little flowers off the breast of the birdie.  I think they are super cute but I just decided to omit them–it’s your call how you do your little birdie!

A couple embroidery notes:  I used 6 strands of floss for all of the stitching on this block.  This pattern incorporates a simple back stitch and french knots.  Please note, as I used 6 strands of floss I only wrap the needle once for my french knots.  I used a water erasable marker to transfer the embroidery pattern onto my fabric–this was done after the block was assembled.

I’d love to see your blocks in the flickr group if you’d like to share. =)

Happy Stitching!

  • I joined your little Birdies a bit later than most and am caught between playing catch up and wanting to keep the blocks I’ve made to embroider them on my summer holidays – each new block is so tempting, it’s hard to wait. Anyway, this is just my way of saying a thank you to you for sharing your design with us – tis one is my first ever BOM and it has been so much fun!

Thank you again for such great Birdie blocks 🙂
I still need to finish my april block but looking forward to start on the may block

I’ve fallen a little behind on my blocks, but hope to catch up soon as I get my veggie gardens all planted. Thanks so much for sharing this BOM with us.

  • I’ve been collecting the patterns and have finally found the fabric (I LOVE the line you are using so had to get the same thing!!)….now to make the blocks and get stitching!! 🙂

  • Oh how sweet!! I love him. I am starting on him this morning. You are doing such a wonderful job of making these birdies.

  • I have been sooo looking forward to May 1! This is lovely… I love the different types of leaves on the flowers. Guess what I’ll be working on today?

  • I love this block! Can’t wait to start stitching all those flowers!

  • Super cute block this month, but I have a concern: the block is printing out much smaller this month then is usually does. I’m currently working on resizing it for myself, but is there a chance you could do that as well?

    • It should print out exactly the size that it should be. Two things for you to double check: make sure that the “page scaling” is set to none and that you don’t have any Adobe Acrobat updates that need to be made–both of those things can effect the way the pdf will print–the page scaling for sure will.

      • Thank you for replying both here and the email!

One thing I find interesting is that when I opened the PDF I downloaded into Photoshop, it displayed the image side ways (running vertical) rather than horizontal. Every month, I’ve just printed from the download page with no issues until this month. I did also check my print scaling and that did not seem to be the issue. Just that printing from my browser, the image ran to fit the width of the paper rather then the height.

        • Hmmm…I wonder what could be doing that? In any event, I did rescan and post a new pdf which should eliminate any problems just in case anyone else was having the same issues! =)

          • I seem to be having this sizing issue every month. I just printed off this months block and it prints as a full A4 page.

          • I just double checked my page scaling and reset it to none and that did work! Yay! Thanks for the tip and love your blocks 🙂

  • I cannot wait to start! Such a happy block! Thank you so much!!!

  • OH YEA! This is so cute! I just want to thank you for inspiring me- I have NEVER been interested in BOM, and want to get better at both quilting, and I have always wanted to embroider! • […] is the May block from the Birdie Stitches BOM. I loved this block but holy cow it was stitch intensive!! I love the flowers […]

  • If you put a thin layer of batting under the white fabric of the quilt blocks you embroidered, and then embroidered into the batting as you went along, once finished, a press upside down onto a towel your work would come out nice and flat, no wrinkles that detracts from the design and the stitches would stand up better. I am a long time embroiderer and this would help your work look more professional.
