I finished up my Art Gallery Project Linus quilt. I used a soft fleece to back the quilt with which makes it super cozy. As I’ve mentioned before using fleece to back with is one of my current favorite things to use–it’s cozier and not quite as stiff as using batting/cotton backing. When I use fleece I forgo the batting.
Elonie is a big fan of the fleece–perfect for her date with mommy’s ipod. On that note, am I the only mommy whose 3 year old wants to use the ipod more often than I do? =p I don’t know how much she would use it if I didn’t limit her ipod time!
I stippled this quilt which I gotta say I wouldn’t do again with the fleece backing. Because the fleece is slightly stretchy, stippling just didn’t work as well as I had hoped–it was very difficult to keep a consistent movement–straight line quilting is definitely the way to go(which I’ve done before with fleece and had no trouble). And I finished it off with a white binding–I think it frames all the bright colors perfectly and it ties in the small bits of white within the quilt.
Now I just need to drop off the quilt at my local Project Linus site. I’m lucky to have two different quilt shops within 5 miles that are both Project Linus drop off sites. What a fun project–thanks so much to Pat of Art Gallery fabrics for putting together such a wonderful event!

Beautiful quilt! Just wondering about the backng, do you have to prewash fleece and did you use a cotton binding or fleece? I just think that the idea is brilliant. Thank you.
I haven’t had any problems not prewashing the fleece (I also don’t prewash quilting cottons). If I were to prewash the cottons then I would definitely prewash the fleece. The binding is a cotton binding. It really does make a very cozy quilt!

My little 2 1/2 year old grabs her dads IPod all the time when he is not looking!!!! She even tells us that Santa is bringing her one (No he is not! lol ) but them she also wants a sewing machine …… hmmm must be watching me a little to much :o)

I love fleece on the back, too! In fact, I’m staring at my new Christmas flimsy, wondering if I have enough red fleece left for it! ;D
Your pictures are adorable. I think that’s such a good idea to use fleece instead of batting and backing and thank you for the straight line stitching tip 🙂

Cute quilt….cute girl! I agree that working on fleece is really difficult. I have been backing most of my quilts with flannel now.
Awesome! And a lovely model. 🙂 I have a two (almost three year old) and I think he’d steal my ipod if I let him. He already tries to get my laptop and smart phone.
How are you going to quilt these fleece backed quilts? I love the quilt.
The one in the picture is stippled by machine–I have also straight line quilted them which I reccommend over stippling(on fleece)–much easier!
I’m so glad you made the comment about the stippling. I’m about to machine quilt one with a minkee backing, which I’ve never done before and am very nervous about. I planned on stippling, but it never occured to me that it would be harder than straight lines, and since my design is very “boxy” I think I will do straight lines instead, just to help with the slipping and stretching.
Fleece would be very cozy too. I’ll have to give that a try sometime!!
Cute ipod photos……yes, strange how the little ones know how to work that stuff so well.
I’ve worked with minkee before in quilts and it can be squirrelly! =) I think you’ll have quite a bit of an easier time going with the straight lines–what a wonderfully soft quilt that will be!
I too have taken to using flannel on the back of quilts, especially baby ones! It started when my daughter requested for me to make ‘not those stiff and heavy’ quilts for our grand twins, flannel with no batting was suggested and the quilts are beautiful and soft! It does make them more cozy, too!
Our grand daughter has been playing games on her Mom’s and my ipad since the spring(she was almost two). She now has a second hand IPAD version1, and just swipes and clicks away, from her learning games to British children’s cartoons on you tube to shows on Netflix, as does our other grand daughter with her mom’s Iphone! I do believe when they get to kindergarden they will be issued a cell phone number and an Iphone /or I pad…
OOPs, I meant IPOD and now she has a second hand Ipad! too many ‘I” gadgets!
Interesting… I ‘ve been backing baby quilts with fleece for quite sometime now but never dared to do any attempt on actually machine quilting it together. I am pleased to read your post where you share your experience with this. Next time I’ll definitely will try some straight line machine quilting. And btw your girl is just as adorable as your quilt… 😀
