Moda Block Heads Block 7

Welcome to week 7 of Moda Block Heads Round 3.  This week we have a fun, quick block, Zest, from Lissa Alexander.

To download the Zest block pattern, visit Lissa’s blog.

I really enjoyed making this block–and it is a quick one.  Including cutting time, I had this block done in 15 minutes.  I had a huge to do list so I was happy to so quickly check making this block off of that list. =)

Just a couple tips to make this block come together even nicer for you.  When doing corners like this (stitch and flip, sew and flip, snowball corners are some of the names they go by), I always press before trimming out the bottom two layers.   (I do the same for flying geese)  This way, I can be sure that I have sewn exactly as I wanted to.  If all raw edges match perfectly when pressed, I know the block is just right.  Then trim out the bottom two layers using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Secondly, when you have stitch and flip corners coming together at an angle as in this block, your block will lay nice and flat if you press those seams open.  So for my Zest block, I have pressed all seams open.

Zest & Love Blocks

For my Zest block, I used a print from Strawberry Jam.  This block is just the cutest with the Love block from a couple weeks ago.

I hope that you all enjoy sewing up your Zest block. =)

Happy Sewing!

Adorable block! I have been collecting heart block ideas for another quilt or many! Love the simplicity of this one!

It’s beautiful in this fabric, especially with the “love” block

It’s a really cute block, but I’m kind of confused. There are only instructions for the 8″. I’m doing all 6″ blocks because I’m going to use your setting at the end. So are you not putting this block in your final quilt? I can always skip this block or easily find an alternate 6 incher, but I’m just wondering.

All four sizes are included in the pattern, 4″, 6″, 8″, and 12″. My block is a 6″ block as I am making all 6″ blocks. =)

Thank you for the tips! I use the Simple Folded Corners ruler by Antler Quilt Design. That helps me a lot.

Thanks for the pressing tips. I have always just pressed to opposite sides, but pressing open would yield the same amount of fabric and still help reduce the bulk. Can’t wait to make this block and try this tip today (after work).

I am a press to the side person as well. For the most part blocks are going to lay nicer when the seams are pressed open–but for me, the time spent pressing open doesn’t always justify doing it. Plus, I often feel that my intersections are not as accurate when I press everything open. But, there are definitely times when I will press open depending on the angles of the seams.

    Hi Corey,

I just received my Canning Day FQ. Do you have any suggestions regarding the background fabric. For the Moda Blockhead #3.

    I really like this fabric.

    Thank you.
