Sunday Best Quilts Sampler Block 2

Starling Quilt from Sunday Best Quilts

Welcome to week two of the Sunday Best Quilts Sampler sew along. =)  PS, be sure to read to the end for a fun announcement.

It has been such a treat to see all of your blocks popping up on Instagram (be sure to use #sundaybestquiltssampler and tag Sherri and I @corianderquilts and @aquiltinglife so we can see your pictures!) as well as in my Facebook group.

This week, we will be making the Starling block from Sunday Best Quilts.

Starling Quilt Block in Sugarcreek Fabrics

In the Starling quilt for the book, I used V&Co’s Ombre confetti fabrics.  I hadn’t worked with them before and I so enjoyed them.  If you aren’t familiar with Vanessa’s Ombre fabrics, go and poke around a bit on her website and look at all the pretty things you can make with them!

The print I used for my Sunday Best Quilts sampler quilt is one of my favorite fabrics from Sugarcreek.  I don’t very often buy prints by the bolt but I just had to of this print–both the gray background and the white background.

The Starling block requires a number of square in a square patches.  Sometimes these units can be a little bit tricky to keep square.

One tool that I always have on my sewing machine is the Clearly Perfect Angles seam guide.  It makes sewing units like stitch/flip corners, HST’s, and Flying Geese so much nicer.  I am also excited to try out the new Diagonal Seam tape.  It works the same way as the Seam Guide but in tape form.  You use the lines on the guide/tape and it eliminates the need for drawing all of those diagonal lines.  I was excited when my local shops started carrying the seam guides because I recommend them so often!–I will need to let them know about the Seam Tape as well–I think it is a great product.  You might find making square in a square units easier by using this sort of notion.  It doesn’t work for everyone but I find it very helpful.

Be Sure to visit Sherri’s website to see if she has another other tips for making these sorts of units. =)  And to see her block, she chose a rainbow of color for her block.

One note about the cutting instructions you will be following in Sunday Best Quilts for the Starling Block.  The background cutting instructions you will see in the book are to make the whole quilt.  From the background fabric, to make just one block you will need:

32 squares of the smaller sized squares

24 squares of the larger sized squares

Follow the fat quarter cutting diagram from the book to cut your print fabrics.

I’ve also included the coloring page diagram again for this week’s block.  Click below for it.

And now, moving on to an exciting announcement. =)  Sherri and I have teamed up to bring you the “Sweet Day” subscription box.  We all love getting little surprises in the mail… and what is better than a fabric surprise box. =)

“Sweet Day” will include 12 fat quarters.  They will be a mix of fabrics from Canning Day and Summer Sweet.  The box will also include an original Coriander Quilts design, an original Quilting Life Design, and one notion.  Each pattern will be designed to use half of the fabrics included within the box.   You will be able to make both projects with the fabrics included (excluding background, binding, and backing).

Pre-orders for the Sweet Day box begin today and can be reserved in my Etsy shop.  A $5 deposit will reserve your box with $39.99 due shortly before the boxes ship in February.  A limited number of boxes are available so make sure to order right away if you’d like one. =)

Is the Sweet Day surprise box a one-time thing? The subscription part confuses me.

  2. Stephanie Feador says:

I signed up for the box! Thank you Corey…this will be the best subscription box ever! Woo hoo!

  3. Kay says:

I wish you would have made the PDF in color like it was last week. It’s more helpful that way, IMO.

    • Corey says:

You’re right!—I didn’t even think of it as not being in color. My block used all gray fabrics so that’s how I colored the block. :). The coloring pages are designed to be used so you can color in your block using your fabric colors so you might find that helpful to use. 🙂

I couldn’t sign up for the Sweet Day Box fast enough!! I’m really excited for it!! 🙂

  5. Christine Mulvihill says:

Very disappointing that your Sweet Box won’t ship to Canada. Canadians do love your fabrics and support you in our quilt shops. We buy your books and follow your quilt alongs. Maybe that can be changed for the next box!

    • Corey says:

Oh, I know!–I’m so glad you are weighing in. I think shipping to Canada would be about $25 based on when I’ve shipped patterns to Canada. That is over half the cost of the box–would there still be interest with such high shipping? I don’t mind shipping to Canada if I knew the cost wouldn’t be a problem!

  6. I’m so sad that the Sew Day box has already sold out. 😢 Any chance of more becoming available?

    • Corey says:

We actually sold out of our first round of boxes within hours and then added double the amount and have sold out of that round as well. We don’t plan to add any more of them.

  7. Jane Taylor says:

I missed the Sweet Day box as well! If there is anyway to get one please post.

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
