Wondering Wednesday Week 6

Good Morning and welcome to week 6 of Wondering Wednesday!  I wasn’t sure if I was going to get a post up today or not. =)

I have some lemon bars I’d like to make along with broccoli/cauliflower salad for a get-together tomorrow but that can wait a little bit longer. =)

I really enjoy answering these questions for you guys and thought you might like some pre (or Post-Thanksgiving) question answering.

Debbie Gehlken asks: “Do you ever use Kona Cotton solids?”

Kona Cotton Color Card–and old photo from 2011!

Answer:  I used to use a lot of different solids including Kona Cotton Solids.  I now primarily use Moda’s Bella line of solids.  I liked working with Kona Cotton solids but I had trouble with the dye lots differing from bolt to bolt.  This was really unhandy when I needed just a little bit more fabric but the same name solid was not the same color.  It has been years since I used Kona’s so this may no longer be a problem and I thought the fabric itself was very nice to use.

If you can purchase all of the fabric that you need for your project in one go, you will be fine.  And, I do tend to find a very nice selection of Kona Cottons in my local quilt shops which makes them so nice to buy in person.

Jacqueline Celestine asks: “What patterns are good uses of layer cakes?  I bought one and now I’m not sure what to do with it!”

Answer:  Layer Cakes are probably my favorite pre-cut.  They work in so many different projects.  Pictured at the top of the screen, Freshly Cut is a layer cake pattern and so is Pound Cake (above).  If you’ve never worked with wovens (which is what I used in the Pound Cake quilt), I’ve talked about them in this blog post. The background I’ve used for Pound Cake is one of the wovens and it is so nice as a background!

Other Layer Cake patterns I’ve designed are Delighted:

Rummage Sale:

A couple things about Rummage sale–that background first of all!–it is Bella in Green.  It is such a great aqua shade!  And for making so many square in a square units I really like the Clearly Perfect Angles seam guide.

Fat Quarter Shop recently the video where I’ve shared how this tool works if you would like to see it in action:

My local quilt shop carries this tool so maybe yours does too if you’d like to pick one up!

Another Layer Cake pattern that I have is Beholden 2 which uses 2 layer cakes.

Next question!

Suzi Elliott asks: “Have a question when it comes to hand stitching and supplies.  Can you purchase your 12 wt thread by the spool or just in the kit?  Going to try my hand at some while on vacation.  Thanks in Advance!”

Sunny Stitches Thread box

Answer:  You can buy my selection of Aurifil 12 wt. hand quilting threads as a collection or individually.  The best place I have found online for purchasing Aurifil threads individually is Hawthorne Supply Co.  As far as I know, they offer the full line of Aurifil threads in all of the weights and they have a color card you can purchase for the threads.

It’s always a great idea to check with your local quilt shops too about threads.  Aurifil is becoming easier to purchase in the United States but it might be something your local shop hasn’t considered carrying.  Or perhaps they carry the 50 weight thread for piecing but they haven’t added any of the other weights to their selection.

Hand Quilting

I hope you guys have a wonderful Thanksgiving!–and perhaps get a chance to shop local over the holiday.  I’ve heard some of you are coming to Berlin over the weekend and hope you have fun!  It’s so festive this time of the year.  I will be back on Friday with another Sunday Best Sampler Quilt Block. =)

Be sure to leave any questions you might have on this post for me to answer on another Wondering Wednesday!–you guys have the best questions. =)

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
