Wondering Wednesdays Week 1

Sugarcreek Selvage

Welcome to week 1 of Wondering Wednesdays.  Today, I will be taking time to answer some of your questions from last week.  Thank you so much to all of you that left questions!–I am looking forward to this series.

Mary B. asked: “I have a fat eighth bundle of Pepper and Flax and am saving it for something special, but just can’t seem to commit to anything.  What quilt would you make with it?

9th & Vine quilt in Pepper & Flax

Answer:  I really like my 9th & Vine pattern in Pepper & Flax.  It is the quilt that I designed to use both fat eighths and P&F and I really like how it turned out.  The quilting by Dorie is also amazing and I love how it brings the design together.

I also think my Beholden pattern would be pretty using P&F.  It is also a fat eighth friendly quilt.

And, I also mocked up my Lemon Meringue quilt using Pepper & Flax and think it would be beautiful also.  You would need to pick up extra fat eighths as this pattern uses a total of 40.

All of the above patterns can be found in my Etsy shop.

Pat asked: “I have a question…who comes up with the little sayings on the selvages of the fabric…the designer or someone at Moda?

Answer:  We get to!  Moda was not printing the selvage quotes when my first line, Prairie came out.   But, all of my lines after that have included the cute little quote.  Here are the sayings from each line:

Sundrops: “she used bits of sunshine to make beautiful things”

Lulu Lane: “Live.Laugh.Love”

Flower Mill: “laughter is to my soul what sunshine is to flowers”

Pepper & Flax: “Fabric + Love = Beautiful”

Sunnyside Up: “a little sewing each day brings sunshine your way”

Strawberry Jam: “something sweet to brighten your day”

Sugarcreek: “where we love is home”

Canning Day: “plant kindness, gather love”

Sugarcreek Wovens

Since my Sugarcreek wovens have come out, I have been receiving quite a number of questions about working with wovens.  I am going to dedicate a whole blog post to these questions and hope to have that up next week.

Poppyseed Quilt

The last question for today is brought to us by M. Meluch.

M. Meluch asks: “Just wondering if you starch your fabric.  Some people completely soak the fabric and then let it air dry…prior to making any cuts.  I have not jumped on the starching bandwagon, but I am wondering if I should.”

For those of you unfamiliar with with the heavy type of starching being referred to, it was introduced to us a number of years ago by Lisa Bonjean.  You can see a quick video of it here.   And here is a follow-up blog post Lisa shared.

Grays and Yellows from my lines

Answer:  I do not starch this heavily and I usually do not starch before I cut my fabrics.  I most often will starch if my regular pressing does not flatten the block as nicely as I would like it to.  When I starch, I like a heavier weight starch like the one shown in the video (Faultless).

Mini Star Block

This is a mini star block that I made last week.  It will finish at 2″.  I did use starch on this block as I was piecing to help my seams lay nice and flat.

Quilters will all have different preferences about so many different things.  If you love starching and it makes your blocks lay flatter…go for it.  If you prefer Best Press over Faultless, then that’s what you should be using.  Some of these things, we have to try out and decide what works best for us.  They don’t necessarily have a right/wrong answer it’s just which way we like best.

Thanks again for commenting with your Wondering Wednesday questions!  I still have many to answer and will be back next week to do so. =)  If you have any questions that you would like to see answered in a future Wondering Wednesday post, please leave it for me in the comments. =)

You mentioned your wovens. What does that mean?

    • debbie frio says:

Wovens are fabrics that are woven to provide the colors or designs instead of printed or dyed. So, most of them do not have a reverse side, instead they look the same on either side. They shed more because they are more loosely woven.

  2. Mary says:

Do you wash your fabric before cutting and sewing a quilt?

  3. Sue says:

I picked up a Pepper and Flax Jolly Bar. Could that be subbed into the patterns?

  4. Patty Fowl says:

Love this new log feature, “Wondering Wednesday “. Is there any chance there might be a sequel to Your Pepper and Flax line… maybe with some Wovens added in? Also, would LOVE to see you do a Christmas/holiday line.

  5. Deborah DeLisle says:

Love this idea of asking questions. How are you influenced with pattern design? What comes first, the pattern name or design? I would love to see another “chicken wire” pattern; maybe in softer tones.

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
