Birdie Stitches Block #8
So I am excited to be sharing Block #8 with you however, not so excited about the fact that this means that it is August….blah…school will be starting and my little Chloe will be going every day. Last year Chloe went to school every other day and then every other Friday–so, at most, she went 3 days a week—surely this year it would only stand to reason that at most she attend school 4 days a week, right?!? =p
Anyhoo, I know that you all aren’t hear to listen to “my little girl is growing up” woes so on to Block #8! Summer always reminds me of sunflowers so here ya go:
Block Construction(All blocks will be constructed in the same manner):
Center square: 8.5″ square
Border Squares: (20) 2.5″ squares
I like to assemble the block before doing the embroidery work–it’s just a little bit easier to hoop it up. Sew together 2 sets of (4) 2.5″ squares–these strips will measure 8.5″long–sew one set to the top and bottom of the 8.5″ center square. Sew the remaining 2.5″ squares into two sets of 6. These will measure 12.5″ long–sew one strip on each side of the block. And Voila! a 12.5″ square block all ready for embroidery. You will find the embroidery pattern below in pdf format
(Note: If you ever have trouble with the size your pattern is printing out at, be sure that your page scaling is set to “none’ prior to printing)
A couple embroidery notes: I used 6 strands of thread for all of the embroidery. This pattern incorporates a simple back stitch and french knots. Please note, as I used 6 strands of floss I only wrap the needle once for my french knots. I used a water erasable marker to transfer the embroidery pattern onto my fabric–this was done after the block was assembled.
And here we have our completed blocks so far:
We have some stellar blocks over in the flickr group. Be sure to add yours–I really enjoy seeing them!
For those of you following along with Birdie Stitches–if you would like to receive email notifications when I post on my blog you can now sign up to receive them. I had numerous requests about adding this feature so there ya go. =)
looking great! i can’t wait to see them all together!
Your blocks are so dainty and cute…love them!

These birdie stitches are so dang cute! Wish I enjoyed hand stitchery. My baby turned 27 this year…..sometimes it seems like only yesterday she was just starting school. Wow, the time sure passes far too quickly. But now I have darling grandkids to love and spoil.
Thanks so much! I didn’t know that I enjoyed stitching as much as I do until more recently–it has really been a lot of fun. And yes, time is passing way too quickly!
Aww, I’m sorry that your daughter’s going to go to school full time this year. I was getting sad when I was thinking about maybe possibly sending my two-year-old to a daycare for just a week or two (because I heard they potty-train the kids who are still in diapers, hehe), so I can imagine how you’re feeling. I hope your daughter really enjoys school, though! 🙂
She really does enjoy school so that makes it more enjoyable for me. I would be a wreck if she didn’t like it! I’m with you–I just couldn’t send my two year old anywhere just yet. =)
Love the new block… I need to hop on over and download these patterns. They are wonderful!!
Thank you 😀 I love this project so much and can’t wait to be able to actually do it! Enjoy your last few days with your girl. I’m sadly counting mine down until ALL 3 are tucked away at their schools. This is the first school year when the nest will be empty. So sad 🙁
All 3 huh—I don’t know what I’ll do when both of mine are off to school–get a lot done I suppose! LOL! =)
Awww, your story and your sunflower reminds me of when my oldest was little… Emily always called sunflowers “sussafuffas”… and I can’t see one without thinking of her! Now she’s starting grade 9 and I’m officially old!
That is so sweet–I love those funny little words that kids use–so cute!
I am a few months behind, but I still love all the blocks you are coming up with!
I haven’t had a chance to start this yet, but I’ve been saving each month’s block and can’t wait to get started on it!!! Birds are some of my favorites! Thank you for having this!
I can not begin to tell you how much fun I am having doing this stitchery, thanks for much for your time and talent.
I love sunflowers too, we have several in our backyard and they’re beautiful and definitely remind me of late summer. Although in Alabama, late summer happens around October. 🙂 We enjoy the kiddo stories too, both of mine are going to preschool this year (2 and 4) and I think I’m going to die when the 4 year old goes to kindergarten next year. 🙂
I was so not a fan of sending Chloe off to Kindergarten last year. I let her ride the bus since it’s only a 5 minute ride and she was so excited about being able to ride the bus–however, I think her bus driver must have thought that I was nuts trying not to completely burst into tears as she got on the bus. =p
I’m a few months behind, too, but I have lots of travel coming up this fall to catch up with my blocks in hotels and airports. I can’t remember if I commented to you about this or not, but I was at a conference at Stanford in May, and in between my presentations, I was working on one of your blocks in the break room. A man came up and asked if that was a Little Miss Shabby pattern and I nearly fell off my chair! Apparently, his fiance is working on your Birdie Stitches, too!
I about fell off my chair when I read this too! =p Hee Hee–that is so cool though.
Thank you! I am having such fun with these blocks. 🙂
What’s the name of the fabric line you use and where can it be purchased? Thanks!
The name of the line is Sunkissed by Sweetwater for Moda. This shop: http://www.hollyhillquiltshoppe.com still has a great selection available. Plus, they still have the grey solid which is getting a bit harder to find. =)
Thank you!
I have been faithfully embroidering my BOM Birdie Stitches. I just love this project and am making a queen size quilt. All my other blocks are pieced and waiting for the embroidered blocks. I look forward each and every month with great anticipation. Thanks for sharing your creativity with all of us.
