Let’s Talk Applique + Giveaway!
I haven’t talked about my book a lot because, quite frankly, it makes me nervous to do so! =) This was the last way I thought I might feel when at long last it is available to purchase.
I remember when I started the writing process, Chloe was starting 2nd grade, and I knew she would be almost done with 3rd grade when I would finally have a copy in my hands. And now it’s here…and I didn’t realize I would feel anything other than excitement. I didn’t realize how much I would feel like I am totally putting myself out there–makes me nervous! =)
Today, I thought I might share a bit about what led me to write a book about applique.
When I began making quilts about 15 years ago, I was drawn to applique right from the start. This is the 2nd pieced quilt I made(the first was a ragtime quilt).
My fabric choices sure have changed! =) I continued making quilts for several years often incorporating applique into them. When my oldest daughter Chloe came along, I veered off into appliqued clothing for a number of years when I started my children’s clothing business, Little Miss Shabby.
I started with simple applique pieces but quickly realized that I enjoyed designing more complex designs and custom pieces.
My custom work varied a lot–I did a lot of pieces for clients traveling to Disney who wanted something special for their daughter. I think it’s important to note that these are not done using an embroidery machine!–They are all appliqued on my little old Bernina. I drew up the design, hand cut all of the pieces, fused them into place and satin stitched around them using a tight zigzag stitch and then hand painted the faces.
Sometimes a client would want a special character they were unable to find elsewhere:
Or sometimes, something for a themed event.
As much as I loved designing all sorts of custom clothing for my clients, the workload was a little bit intense at times and I stepped back from the business when my daughter Elonie was born.
At that time I realized that I hadn’t made a quilt for several years, and thought this would be a great project to keep me busy during those rare down times between keeping a home and caring for a 3 year old and a newborn.
I soon found out that my love of designing had me wanting to try my hand at designing quilts and pillows–often featuring applique.
Over the many years the one thing that I hear most often in regard to applique is “Applique!–Oh I could never do that!–it’s too hard.” And I am always surprised by how many people are so intimidated by it!
So, I wanted to create a book that would give anyone the skills to start to applique with success.
One of the intimidating things about applique are all the different terms: fusible web, raw edge, needle turn, freezer paper, add a seam allowance, reverse templates. How does one begin to sift thru all the information?
Playful Petals focuses on just one shape and one type of applique. It’s the quickest and most simple form of applique.
The book includes 9 quilts and 9 pillows. Each quilt has an accompanying pillow made using the same block as the quilt. That way you can try out and master the applique on a small project before jumping in to making a larger quilt.
I love how the book turned out. I think it’s a wonderful introduction to applique but it also includes a lot of great information for anyone wanting to improve on their applique skills. The Stash imprint of C&T Publishing always does a wonderful job of photographing for the book and I especially love the eye candy!
And now onto the giveaway!
During my book proposal process, I had to make a couple samples of my proposed projects and submit them. This little pillow was in my initial proposal but I ended up changing the design a bit for my book.
So, I am giving away the pillow cover as well as a copy of Playful Petals to one of you! =) You’ll have the opportunity for 4 entries into my giveaway.
- Leave me a comment with your thoughts on applique for one entry.
- If you follow me on facebook, leave me a comment below letting me know for a 2nd entry.
- If you follow me on instagram, @lmshabby, leave me a comment below letting me know for a 3rd entry.
- If you follow me via bloglovin’ or email subscription leave me a comment below letting me know for a 4th entry.
I’ll draw a winner sometime next week!

I love appliqué. With it, the possibilities are endless! When I was little, I love stickers and collage for a quick embellishment and I think this is just the grown-up quilters’ version of that.

Gorgeous applique. Thank you for sharing.~
I enjoy following you on facebook.
I follow you on facebook and I follow your blog. I love all forms of applique, both hand and machine!
I receive your e-mail postings primarily because I am following your cross stitch block which I am enjoying. I love your applique work. Thanks for hosting this giveaway.
I love appliqué, and find that it is very helpful to know how to do it on machine and by hand.

I do not applique much. My Bernina Record 930 will not do a blanket stitch, so I have to use a couple passes of zigzag stitches to make it work. I love the look of applique projects though, so i might have to find a better way! Thanks for the chance!

I “love” appliqué, it’s my absolute favorite form of quilting! I would tickled pink if I won your work or your book. I also, love your site!

I was drawn to appliqué when I started quilting 3 years ago. Almost all of my quilts have appliqué somewhere on them. I don’t find it scary or intimidating at all.
I love applique and I add it to most of my quilts. Thanks for this great opportunity to win!

I am not much of an applique “r” but, 2 years ago I made a large quilt for my niece’s 15th birthday called 100 dresses.
I adapted a mini pattern from mrs. moen and appliqued 100 dresses onto the quilt in 100 different fabrics. It is my favorite quilt of all time. I may need to try applique again
see my quilt here, it was soo much fun to make and my niece can cuddle in it and tell how much I love herhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/21367940@N00/5637968443/in/set-72157627093470420
I’ve only tried appliqué a few times and really enjoy it. Congrats on your book!!!
What I love about appliqué by hand is, once you have done the cutting etc. you can sit down and relax with needle and thread. If a project is big, I often put it down for a few weeks/months and then enjoy it even more when starting again.
The projects in the book look lovely! Congratulations.
I follow you via email….thanks for the sweet giveaway 🙂
I am following you via facebook, liked it (-:
Thank you for the chance to win.
Congratulations on the book.I love applique. I’ve done mostly machine applique using the technique that you use, but I’ve started working with hand applique and I’m loving that too. Thanks for the chance on your wonderful giveaway.
I LOVE appliqué! I make many seasonal wallhangings with appliqué, especially Fall. I’ve been swooning over your book since I first laid eyes on it!
Oh I would love to win a copy of this book. I adore applique, and much like you said have not really delved deep into the craft as I fear ‘it’s all quite difficult’… congratulations on a fantastic looking book!
I started following you on Instagram a couple days ago! I’m @messyjesse1 🙂
I follow your blog via Bloglovin too, which is how I came to this post 🙂
I’m just starting applique myself and look forward to doing more as I really enjoy applique and the many things you can do with it. I also love flowers and the petals design is what I love about the flowers and how much you can do with it. Would love to win a copy of the book. Congratulations on the book. Also love your website and all the information you’ve given your readers.
I actually started with appliqué before quilting. Quilting is still intimidating for me and for whatever the combination of quilting and appliqué is downright frightful! Baby steps! Thanks for the chance!

I love the look of applique, but am just learning to sew and have never tried it myself. Yours is beautiful!
I follow you via email, and I would love to be entered in your giveaway. Thanks:)

I have never done a full sized quilt using applique, but I enjoy making small runners and mini hangings. I usually do a raw edge if I know it won’t be washed much, if any. Your applique runner…. right from the beginning of your quilt making…. is done beautifully! Thanks for the wonderful giveaway!
And I’m a happy follower! Thanks so much!
I adore applique! My favorite is fusible with a tiny zig-zag edge. I know it’s nuts, but I really enjoy zig zagging around all the edges. Thanks for the opportunity & congratulations again on your book. It looks awesome. Have a super day!
I love to combine patchwork and appliqué and have done so in 5 of our 10 grandchildren’s quilts. Time for a new project. I’d love to win, read and sew with your book. The pillow would be great inspiration. Good work Corey. Your girls will be very proud of their talented Momma!
I think adding applique to a pieced quilt really makes it extra special! Your work is beautiful and the book looks fabulous! Thanks for the chance to win.
If the applique is raw-edge, I’m brave enough to try it. When I have to iron it under (definitely won’t be trying needle turn!) I shy away. Your applique projects look so modern and fun! Nice job!
I love appliqué, been busy with dresdens lately.

I am intimidated by most types of applique so winning this book would be awesome, I love your pillows! Thanks for the chance!
I adore appliqué and would love to make a quilt with petals on it but am always a bit nervous about stitching the edges to make it look professional rather than looking like my 5 year old did it!

Corey – first of all let me say Congratulations on your book. It looks fantastic and I will look for it at my local quilt shop. I follow you on email and look forward to your blog postings. I think I started following you when I saw a link for your tree pillow (that is shown above) and I absolutely loved it! Yes, color and fabric choices do change over time. But your work has consistently been quality and I think that’s what makes people want to follow what you do. Keep up the good work.
I started learning quilt making last year, and I have been loving appliqué. I want to improve my skills, so I think I would learn a lot from your book.
I’ve been waiting for your new book. Have followed your blog for a good while. Thanks for all the inspirations!
I found your blog a few weeks ago and love your work. Appliqué is something I’m trying to learn — and you are inspiring me!

I’m the person you wrote the book for! I love the look of applique, always have, but am SO intimidated by it. I think your book sounds perfect – especially since you offer the smaller projects to “practice” on before jumping in to something bigger. I hope I win… but even if I don’t, this book will end up on my shelves. Congratulations and thank you for the giveaway.
I’m attempting my first mini 12″ x 12″ quilt using applique. It is very enjoyable, and I’m loving learning the process. Your book looks great…congrats!

I love to do hand applique….its so relaxing to me! Great to have small projects that I can take along almost everywhere, and if I find myself restless/waiting, I can always do some stitching! I do however need to find a good replacement to the straw needles that I use…these aging eyes can’t for the life of me get those needles threaded! Love your designs, and I am sure your book will be very successful!

Congratulations on your beautiful book! I must say, applique intimidates me. I’ve tried many different ways, but always end up feeling like it isn’t as nice as I dream it will be. Yet I love appliqued quilts! One of these days I hope to become better at it.

I like applique. I dabble once in a while with freezer paper, paperpiecing then applique, arty applique and most recently glue stick applique. I love the look but think sometimes it won’t last as long if I don’t catch every single thread. I do love how you can embellish and go crazy with shapes and design you just can’t do with piecing.
I follow you on email subscription.
Love applique and your designs are so pretty. I do mine by hand.
I haven’t done much applique but you make me want to try! Thank you for the chance to win.

I like to do raw edge applique with fusible Heat n Bond… then use machine blanket stitch around the edges.

Hi, I have been following your blog for quite some time and I LOVE everything you do 🙂 I am interested in applique but I’m one of those that are scared of it. I also follow you on Facebook
Love the aqua and red pillow. Sew cute! I’ve only done a bit of applique so far. I didn’t want to do fusible at first, because I’m a hand quilter, and you just can’t hand quilt thru that stuff easily. Now that I’m learning how to straight line quilt on the machine, I’m more interested in learning more about fusible and other types of applique. I’d love to have a copy of your book. Thanks for the chance.
I don’t FB or instagram. I follow you with my dashboard reader. I did sign up for bloglovin’ but, I don’t ever use it, since the dashboard still works.
I’m a newbie to all this but I have viewed so many blogs showcasing their applique work and it is amazing to see all the varieties and talents.

I have never tried applique, but I have seen several projects I’d like to have a go at. I think it’s a great idea to have a smaller project for each block design, it would make me much more likely to try it as I could make something much smaller and faster than a quilt to see if I liked it first. Is the giveaway open internationally? I’m in the UK.
I am a little uncomfortable with applique but these quilts are so beautiful I am willing to give it a try.
I haven’t done any appliqué, however, I’m a huge fan of cross stitch and embroidery. Another favorite hand-work project I adore, is making hexies, which your work is inspiring. Thanks for the chance!

I’m not exactly intimidated by applique, except maybe the thought of designing my own. My skills at it are average, and I’m OK with that. I’ve done more hand applique than machine applique so far.
I love my applique quilts, they show a different side to me and love using wool as it makes it more homey.
Congratulations on your book! I love the look of applique and I love doing it. I’ve tried several of the different ways but I think I like best to do needle turn applique and I do love the look of it also. I love the little birds you add to your projects!

I love applique mixed with pieced blocks and some hand embroidery. That is what I’m attracted to. Your book looks terrific. I like the idea of trying the design on a pillow before you commit to a whole quilt.

Whoops I almost forgot to leave a comment about reading and following your blog as well as the email. Same comments about applique. Such an art and can be intimidate but there are so many different methods that I know that most of us can do it (except needle-turning for me .. /shudder). Your work is so beautiful, though. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve done applique for years. I used to make appliqued sweat shirts for my boys and myself when they were little. At that time I sealed the edges with fabric paint. Then I did applique on table runners, monthly blocks to hang, and other small quilted projects, and did the buttonhole stitch around them. I need to learn machine applique, because I would love to do quilts with applique on them, and I love your quilts, so I would love your books. Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

Congratulations on the book! I’m still trying to find the method of applique that works best for me. I think I have found it with back basting, but not too sure yet. I can’t do the machine applique with the zig zag because my machine doesn’t do that stitch well. I’ll keep trying, though, because it is so beautiful!

I would like to learn more about applique. Thanks for the chance to win this beautiful cover and your book, I love new books!
I never liked to do applique, but I have recently found some easier methods and there are a couple of the designs you have shown that really makes me get into it like right now. Look forward to all your emails, you certainly are talented

I have never tried appliqué (I know, get outta town!). It just looks a but tricky and that has put me off. I am sure if I had a crack at it though I would think “why did I wait so long?”!
Like you, I was drawn to applique pretty early on in the piece. By no means have I been sewing as long as you so my skills are still rather wanting, but I am getting there one quilt at a time. I like the meditative quality of applique as I’m concentrating on just one thing instead of on my littlel girl and the washing that needs to be done or folded and put away, or the grocery shopping list or the bills…..you know what I mean I am sure. Thank you for sharing!

I actually finished my first appliqué project tonight and I loved it! I thought it was going to be way harder so some reason; maybe because there are additional steps and materials I’m not too familiar with? I have been waiting for your book to come out for a while and would love to win a copy! Thanks for the chance to win!

I like applique. I have never tried needleturn applique – I always fuse in place and either blanket stitch by hand or use a satin stitch on the machine.
I like applique but I need a lot more practice.

Hi there! I agree with you about the eye candy! Wow! I’m in awe of the beautiful projects you have created! I have a hankering to try applique. I hear people say its not as hard as you think, and I know I want to try it. Thanks for making an opportunity to win this fun giveaway! I would be honored to have this pillow in my house!
Your blog posts land in my email inbox every time you post! Thanks for all the inspiration!
I love applique! I began adding applique to my quilts many years ago. My quilts are usually created with traditional blocks and the applique adds a finishing touch, as well as added dimension and interest. I have tried the satin stich when sewing applique, but my absolute favorite stitch for applique is the blanket stitch whether done by hand or by machine.
Congratulations on your new book! Thank you for the opportunity to win a copy!
I am like you and love to applique. I am very interested in your book becuase i have trouble with the needle turn and this will teach me other options that I know I will enjoy!

Hi, I am somewhat afraid of applique. I have tried some very small projects and they have turned out okay so I don’t really know what I am afraid of! Perhaps it just looks intimidating. I think your book and the projects in it would help me to conquer that fear. I follow you through email and am trying to work through your counted cross stitch sampler. Still a bit behind but it is looking good!
I wanted to learn to applique for my bucket list but ended up falling in love with it! I keep a stash by my evening chair so while watching tv with hubby, I can keep my hands busy.
But I am so impressed with all you’ve accomplished in your creative career so far! And all while raising children! We are so lucky that you are so generous with your talent!
Walk tall and feel very proud of your wonderful book!! We are so happy for you!! Hugs, Deb

Funny but I used to do applique when I first learned quilting, although now I rarely do any. When I see your beautiful projects and others, it urges me to get back to applique once again.
I love sitting with my appliqué, often with a cat beside me, enjoying the peace of hand stitching. I am slowly improving my needle turn skills, and love the idea of cushions for each quilt in your book, to give a smaller project for practice. The book looks stunning!
I would like to learn to applique my few attempts with internet directions have been pitiful. I really think I need a hands on class to learn applique.
I’ve only appliqued a few things by machine, but I love doing the technique. Your book looks delightful. Thanks for having a lovely giveaway to celebrate it’s release.

I am new to applique, but would love to learn! Those cute little birds… Just adorable…
I love applique as it is SO versitileon whatever we create -quilts, clothing, cushions, bibs or bags, a little applique can jazz up any project. My favourite applique was a quilt for my daughter-in-law which had trailing vines and abundant flowers appliqued all around the border. It was the first quilt that I had really personalised and she loved it.
I really like applique, but I don’t use it often in my quilts. Your book just might be the inspiration I need.

What a wonderful collections of colors and shapes, very appealing to the eye. Thank you for this opportunity, I am just a beginner but love your work.
My thoughts on applique — I think I prefer the look of hand applique, but it is just so time consuming! I love the speed of machine applique, and I do like the way it looks as well. I have a few projects that are hand applique that may never get done . . .
Thanks for a great giveaway!
I can imagine how nervous you feel about having your book finished and out there, but just know that everything you put on your blog is beautiful. You do amazing work, and I’m sure your book is just as amazing. What a huge feat just to complete it! So impressive!
