Moda Blockheads Round 3, Block 3

Crown & Star Block

Welcome to the third block for Round 3 of Moda Block Heads.

Crown and Star is brought to us by Betsy Chutchian.  You will want to visit her blog to download the free block pattern.  If you have followed along on the previous two weeks, you will know that on Wednesday mornings, the featured blog tends to run slow with 1000’s of Block Heads racing to download the block pattern. =)  We are an excited bunch!  If you encounter any trouble just check back later in the day.

Additionally, the block pattern is uploaded to the files section of the Moda Block Heads facebook group each Friday.  If you missed week 1 or week 2 block instructions, you will find those in the files section of the group as well.

Crown & Star Block

The fabrics I used for my block are from Sunnyside Up (purple) and Canning Day (aqua floral).  Canning Day will be arriving to quilt shops next month and Sunnyside Up came out in Fall of 2018.

Because I like to use the stitch and flip method of making flying geese:

Stitch & Flip Method

I opted to cut my pieces a little bit differently.  For the flying geese units, the rectangles were cut at 1 1/4″ x 2″ and the squares were cut at 1 1/4″ x 1 1/4″.  This is for the 6″ block size.  Additionally, I prefer to use the 2 squares method when making HST’s so I cut those squares at 1 3/4″ and trimmed the HST’s to 1 1/4″.  Again, this is for the 6″ size.

I know that some of you also prefer using these methods so I hope this size information is helpful.

Another tool that I love using for flying geese and HST’s is the Clearly Perfect Angles seam guide–so I don’t have to draw all of those diagonal lines!

I shared a video about this tool this summer if you’d like to see it in action:

I’ve been using this tool for years and it has saved me so much time.  And here are my first three blocks from this round of Block Heads:

First Three blocks

They are quite a happy little bunch of blocks. =)  I also went ahead and plugged them into my planned layout so I could see how things are shaping up.  It might help some of you as well if you haven’t decided on your final lay out yet.

Blockheads Layout first three blocks

I will be sharing the fabric requirements and solids information once I have a chance to figure up the math.  I have pattern deadlines this week and then after that my schedule is going to be a lot more free!  So, if this is the layout you have decided on, keep an eye out!

There are two different lay out options listed on this Moda Blog Post and a number of the other designers have also listed the lay outs they have chosen for themselves.  Be sure you are visiting the designer blogs so you can stay up to date on all the fun information being shared each week.

As a reminder, here is the list of designers:

1.15 – Corey Yoder
1.22 – Sherri McConnell
1.29 – Betsy Chutchian <–we are here
2.5 – Jan Patek

And finally, I have decided to split up my Moda Block Heads post and my Wondering Wednesday post each week.  I will be better able to talk about each of them rather than trying to fit too much information into one post.  So keep an eye out for the next Q&A post to come out either later this week or next.

Happy Sewing!

Corey

I love your stitch and flip method. Could you please let us know the measurements for 8 & 12″ blocks. Or how you figure it out.

I’m curious how you would handle a top loading bobbin with the Clearly Perfect Angle. Should I cut out for the bobbin hole or remove each time I need to change bobbins?

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
