About Town Tuesdays {Plaid Sheep Company}
Welcome to the first in a brand new series, About Town Tuesday.
For those of you unfamiliar with where I live…I live in Holmes County Ohio, specifically Berlin, Ohio which just happens to be one of the top tourist destinations in Ohio. Some years Cedar Point in Sandusky gets that honor but other years it’s Holmes County. We boast the largest Amish community in the world with over 40% of the county’s population being Amish.
Berlin and the neighboring towns are dotted with quilt shops, craft shops, bakeries, and so many things to see and do. If you follow me on Instagram you have seen my #sundayslowdown posts where I share a photo each Sunday of the sights where I live. I thought it would be fun to take you around town and share some of the shops you might visit if you popped in to my town. Today, I am sharing Plaid Sheep Company with you.
Plaid Sheep Company recently changed their name and some of you may remember it as Country Craft Cupboard. Country Craft Cupboard opened it’s doors in 1984 as a craft store. I sat down with Karen Lamp (owner) and Suzette Miller (Manager) last week to chat about how CCC began and led to Plaid Sheep Company.
When the shop originally opened, it was a craft store…hence the name Country Craft Cupboard. Karen saw a need for the community to have access to craft making supplies as the closest such store was 30-45 minutes away.
Country Craft Cupboard opened carrying a variety of craft supplies like floral supplies, cake decorating supplies, painting items, basket making supplies, cross stitch etc.
Additionally, the shop offered classes on any number of different crafts. In 1987, Country Craft Cupboard moved to a larger location from the edge of Berlin to the center of Berlin right beside Boyd & Wurthman restaurant (a local favorite). The building they moved into was the former Boyd & Wurthman grocery store. In fact, in the early years of being in this location, a portion of the store was rented out as freezer space to local Amish families. I found that so interesting!
The Boyd & Wurthman grocery store was originally built in 1918. If you ever shopped in Country Craft Cupboard you will remember the old building!
Country Craft Cupboard began selling a small selection of fabrics when they originally opened. They expanded their fabric selection after moving to the larger location in 1987. They were the first shop in the area to begin carrying Moda Fabrics in the early 90’s. Over the years, while still carrying a variety of craft supplies, the shop has become most well know for their selection of hand dyed wools (most dyed locally) as well as their variety of homespuns and quilting fabrics.
In 2018, Country Craft Cupboard moved about 1 mile to a brand new shop on the east edge of Berlin. When they moved, they renamed the shop “Plaid Sheep Company” which represents the shops wonderful selection of homespuns (Plaid) and wools (Sheep). Karen’s popular pattern line, Backyard Friends, is featured in many of the shop samples and provides a myriad of possibilities in which to use the shops offerings. Take at peek at some of these patterns on the shop website under “Backyard Friends”.
With the move, they were able to offer a better shopping experience: nicer parking, shopping on one level, and better classroom space.
I asked Karen what people say is their favorite things about the shop…why do they have so many repeat customers. Karen responded that everyone always loves all of the samples that are made as well as the displays. The photos that you see sprinkled throughout are from last week. The shop was gearing up for the annual Amish Country Quilt Shop Hop which happens every fall. You can see how many different samples there are–and these are changed frequently.
On the day I visited, a tour bus was traveling through with a group of ladies from Australia that were sight seeing and I could hear them “oohing and aahing” all throughout the shop.
Plaid Sheep Company carries over 1200 bolts of fabric from a number of different fabric companies as well as 100+ bolts of wool.
They offer many different kits and run a popular block of the month, “Sheep Thrills” which is a wool mystery BOM.
Plaid Sheep Company has a hugely popular pajama sale every year (the 2020 dates are January 10 & 11). The event kicks off Friday evening with a 40% off sale from 7pm-10pm for everyone arriving in their PJ’s.
Plaid Sheep Company also offers numerous classes and retreats throughout the year. This includes co-hosting the Quilter’s Gathering in Berlin event I have been teaching at in August. For more information about Plaid Sheep Company (hours, location, events etc) visit their website or facebook page.

I love this. Keep posting more. Would love to see this shop in person.
I just made a major move to a neighboring county a month ago and spent a day shop hopping in Holmes County last week. I found Plaid Sheep Company to be a wonderful shop staffed with friendly, helpful people. I am only an hour away, so I look forward to more posts like this one!
My husband & I have visited Holmes County 3 times this past year. The Plaid Sheep is my first stop then lunch right next door. The shop introduced me to your patterns that we’re on display and I’m just finishing the Barn Star! Love your posts & feel like I have a friend right in Amish land.
Very interesting, thank you for sharing your community with us. Visiting Berlin is on my bucket list.
Great post! I loved going to Country Craft Cupboard. One of my favorite shops to visit when I went to “Amish Country”. I moved to North Carolina a few years ago. And we don’t have anything like this store here. I miss having a place to go look at all those samples. Would love to see their new shop. Thanks for showing us the new space.
Loved reading and looking at photos. What a neat shop! Keep on posting!
Love hearing about “your neck of the woods”. I live in Ohio and frequently visit Your area. I have been buying Amish furniture for years. Just recently made a purchase in Berlin. I remember visiting Country Craft several years ago, but did not realize they changed name and location. I will definitely stop there next time. Thank you for posting!
I love this shop, wished i lived close by! Thanks for sharing!!!
What an interesting and informative article. When I drove through Berlin recently I was saddened to see that the CCC was no longer on the main thoroughfare but I am now so happy to know it still exists in a different way!
What a wonderful store! Thanks for sharing!
Great post! I want to go to there! I love the idea of a great sale just for wearing your pajamas to the store.
Love the post! Keep sharing. I love how every quilt store is unique and has its own finger print. I would love to visit Plaid Sheep Company one day.
Wow! What a store and I wish I lived close to it rather than 1300 miles away!
Love learning about your town. Cannot wait until next Tuesday.
On my next visit to see my aunt in Ashtabula Co. I’m going to make sure I do a side trip to Berlin.
Wow, all that wool! What a great store.
Corey, I’m learning so much about your part of the country just from all your blogs, which I receive ever since starting Sunday’s Best (which I’m really enjoying, too!) Thank you for sharing. I’d love to travel to Ohio some day. I’m in Colorado.
Keep on blogging!
Loved ready about PlaidSheep company. I really liked the idea of sharing on Tuesday’s. Please continue!
Now I REALLY want to visit Berlin. We have 10-15 Amish families recently settled in our area of North Carolina. Thus, I see some scenes like you post on Sunday. I do wish our narrow, winding roads were safer for them. Thanks for the visit to Berlin today!
Corey, thanks for sharing your part of the country with us. I really enjoy reading your blog. Keep them coming!
We travel a considerable amount. Always like to know about an area and especially local quilt shops. Enjoyed this post. Would like more.
Thank you so much..who ever knew I would want to travel to Ohio. Beautiful photos.
Wonderful post!! The Plaid Sheep Co. looks like such a fun place to visit. I could wonder around in there for hours. There’s so much to look at.
I really enjoyed learning about this shop! Great photos also. I’ve been to Berlin years ago while visiting family in Columbus, Ohio. Wonderful experience seeing Amish life and bought several things at one of the Amish cheese factories. Beautiful countryside!
Thanks for the tour of the Plaid Sheep Co. store. It looks so inviting. I live in Montana, but I’m originally from Indiana. Wish I had known of this shop before. Looking forward to hearing about more shops and the types of items they carry.
I this town just might be the next destination for a road trip/shop hop with my 3 quilting cousins! Thank you.
I loved this information! I live in Norway, but have read a lot about the Amish and their way of living.
Thanks for sharing – i remember them as Country Cupboard but lost track of them when they changed their name…can’t wait to go check out their website. Would love to visit!!
Really enjoyed this preview
Love this post. I am always hungry to read about the Amish community and anything happening in Ohio and Indiana… I am a Midwest girl, transplanted to Arizona.
Love the post. Now I want to visit the area. We have an Amish community just across the border in Wisconsin. Every last Saturday in July they have a huge auction with quilts, horses, and handmade furniture as well as wonderful food including homemade ice cream.
Yes please share more posts. I would love to know if there is anything German in your town since your town is certainly named after the German city.
I loved this tour of Plaid Sheep Wool! Yes, please share more of your hometown. It may just be a destination I travel to in the future!
Thank you for sharing and all the great pictures! Love getting a peek at the shops in that area.
So enjoyed your post about the Plaid Sheep company! I enjoyed their store when it was the Country Craft Cupboard and love the new store. Just bought a Sugarcreek layer cake from them a few weeks ago. Looking forward to the next About Town Tuesday!! Thank you so much!
Plaid Sheep is a wonderful shop and their retreats are great fun! Berlin has lots of shops and restaurants, too. A beautiful area of Ohio.
Enjoyed your post. Thanks for sharing. A destination shop for sure! Hope to visit one day.
Wish we could plan a trip there one day! Maybe when I retire. It would be so much much fun, and Corey is so talented!!
I love visiting Berlin! There are some wonderful hotels, inns, and cabins to go to. If you go, remember to drive slowly! It is very hilly and there are plenty of horse and buggies, and bicycles sharing the road! The quilt shops are amazing. Also, my husband is addicted to fry pies!
Corey, I have been to this shop and loved it.
The pictures brought back memories. I also was there at its previous location but did not know the shop story. Loved your post!
Loved this post – and hearing more of this wonderful shop in your area!
Keep ‘em coming!!!
I enjoyed the visit in the shop via your photos. I am sure I would love to visit one day. I loved this post and look forward to reading more about your hometown!
I live in a very rural place, and avidly explored your post, love it keep it coming, I love to virtually shop, and if I have to have it, it’s a phone call away!
Wonderful article about Plaid Sheep Store, I always stopped in Country Cupboard when we were in town. I’ve been to the new location several times and will be going many many more. Great shop and just the greatest ladies working there
please, please keep these going! Berlin reminds me of Shipshewana and is on my bucket list to visit!
Thanks for a great post!
Love this shop!
I love The Plaid Sheep Company, but I miss Country Craft Cupboard all the same. I remember on my very first visit to CCC, long before I was a quilter, purchasing the PERFECT overdyed silk ribbon to ruche and finish off an embroidered needlecase (a Merry Cox class pattern). I had been looking for a long time for something that would work, and CCC came through!
Love The Plaid Sheep Company! I only get down to Berlin once a year, so I always get a good haul of homespuns, primitive muslins, and other goodies. What a great idea to spotlight the Berlin area. Thank you!
Loved this post and would love to see more. We travel a bit and it’s always nice to visit shops that have been showcased by friends.
Yes, please!! Love reading about your wonderful “neighborhood””!!
This is wonderful! I love reading about one of my favorite shops. Been visiting (from Mansfield) since the 80’s. Thanks so much and keep them coming.
Such an interesting article. I would love to read more about your area. Thank you for sharing!
I LOVE Berlin!!! I always tried to go there at least 2 to 3 times a year, but for the past couple of years I have not been able to travel. I remember getting up so early to stand in line in the freezing cold to be able to shop their sales. I always loved that store & everyone was always so friendly and helpful. Hope to get over there and soon.
I was surprised to find you live so close to me! I shop for my quilts primarily in charm, Berlin, and millers burg! I am a Moda fanatic and am particularly in love with your color pallet. I just had a retreat with sisters Barb and Mary and used their new line with one of your patterns from the new Moda artists book and I love it! I have never seen this shop but I can’t wait to find it now. It’s fun to see my area highlighted! Thanks! Hope to run into you somewhere in town!
Fun post. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about this shop.
