All these years, I never knew…
I have the hardest time decorating my house–does anyone else have this dilemma? I feel that I like so many things and I could go in so many directions that I just don’t know where to begin…so, I don’t…well aside from painting my walls every now and then. I can whip together quilts and pillows with great color combos (imo) but, decorate…I get a bit stumped. I’ve really been puzzling over what to do with my family room/kitchen area–they are kind of all one area. You’ve seen peeks of my family room (this picture is taken in my breakfast room with my kitchen to the right–the fireplace is a see-thru fireplace):
And of course, this photo, which is taken in my family room:
Now, when you come in my front door, the family room is on the right, and then I have my living room on the left…you’ve also seen peeks of this room(it’s where I take most of my photos as it has the best lighting):
So, we’ve got green to the left and blue to the right, and I’m not sure they are really that cohesive…but, I’m not completely convinced that I’d want the main floor one color–I don’t know of a color that I’m willing to commit to that much.
I’ve been giving some thought to painting my family room/kitchen areas a buttery yellow color but I haven’t been entirely sure about this. Then, I was browsing etsy, yesterday, and giving some thought to purchasing some of the new Birch Mod Basics polka dots—I have loved them since I saw the previews(especially these colors):
Then I realized that those fabrics are strikingly similiar in color to this stack of solids I put together:
Then I found these fabrics on pinterest that I love(at about $300/yd. I can tell you it will have to remain a crush):
And that all of these fabrics/colors are very similiar to one of my favorite lines of fabric, FreshCut(again, photo from pinterest):
Is it possible that Aqua/Coral/Green/Yellow is my favorite color combo?–and how has it taken me so many years to discover this? =p
So, I’m thinking if I go with the buttery yellow paint color in my family room/kitchen and leave the living room/dining room in the current green shade but use some of the same fabrics between all of the rooms (aqua/coral/yellow/green) it should tie everything together right?
I mean seriously…(all photos from pinterest)
Don’t all those colors play together nicely! I may have to start playing with some fabric and researching some great yellow paint colors. =)
You have such a beautiful blog, and beautiful pictures and things to share. I follow you through email, and so don’t leave many messages. Just wanted you to know I love your blog~
Corey, Great color combination. I love the idea. Cathe
I think you’ve got it all figured out! Each room can be different, but they can tie together beautifully. I love the colors together.
Great decorating colours. I think you can get cohesion by having accents of the other colours in each room. So if you have yellow walls in one room bring some of the other colours in with finishing touches and soft furnishing and then if one room as more aqua walls then use yellow and other colours as accents. That way each room gets to have it’s own distinct personality but ties in with the rest. It also means you can move around your accessories and soft furnishings to get different looks in different rooms without spending a fortune on completely new stuff. It’s going to look fab!
I was ‘in stitches’ when I started reading your post today!! I could so relate to being baffled when it comes to decorating and how it’s easier just ‘not to’!! Your color combinations are glorious! Go for it. You’ll end up with a house that, when you step into it, you’d think you had just opened up a Better Homes and Garden magazine!
By jove, I think she’s got it!! Sometimes you can’t see the forest for the trees, Corey. You’re there now. Go for it!
Your colors made me think of Fresh Figs, Joanne Figueroa’s blog, and her line of fabrics- Fig Tree. So soft and fresh!
My idea of decorating is put stuff someplace that doesn’t make you want to throw up when you look at it, and then leave it there forever! I’m terrible at that kind of thing, but I think you’ve hit it right on the head! Those colors are lovely and calming, and I think the buttery yellow will go wonderfully well with the green in the living room. See, I can recognize beauty in someone else’s plans, just not mine……sigh.
YES ~ and it looks like your quilted cushions and the artwork in your breakfast/family room already combine some of those colours ~ it is meant to be! Love your blog by the way 🙂 Hilary.
Everything is so fresh and spring-y! I love it! Especially the quilt with the ruffle trim. I must try that sometine!
i have so many grandkids and now greatgrands that thats what i put on my walls
I have exactly the same problem. I make dozens of quilts no problem but my walls in the new reno they ended up white just because I couldn’t decide. This is why quilts are such fun we get to try a whole new look every time. Happy stitching. chris.
Oh I love to do walls, what my trouble is seeing what others have done or want to do and it ends up being a mess, MY list is too long to explain,,will talk more later, Thanks Jeanne
You took the words out of my mouth! Love to put fabrics together in wonderful combinations, but couldn’t decorate a doll house if I tried. Your color combinations are also some of my favorites – kindred souls maybe? As someone else mentioned, they are very similar to Fig Tree fabrics (which I own far too much of!)
It’s such a big commitment – painting a wall or reupholstering a couch. Too bad we couldn’t just try it out with a magic wand first! Good luck!
It sounds good to me. Paint is kind of cheap…go for it. AND you get to play with all of those yummy colors in fabric.
Beautiful pics and a GORGEOUS color palette. Go for it! And then share lots of pics! 🙂
I’m the same – I can’t even choose a paint color. We’ve got the neutral light brownish/taupe color. I’ve got ideas, but haven’t ever really gone for it. I love the colors you’ve picked.
I found using Pinterst has helped me narrow in on what colors, furniture and overall style I really like. It’s a fun website and I love looking at the beautiful images, but it’s also turned out to be a useful tool.
I had an epiphany around Christmas! I was trying to fight my style so hard that I was MISERABLE!
I LOOOOVE It! It is so beautiful…and I am NOT repinning that $300 fabric, because it would look AMAZING in my library…
You have some great thoughts, and those colors are wonderful together!! (I love them too: pinned the gorgeous floral arrangement with the coral flowers and the Mother Hen succulent!) My sister had butter yellow on her walls and I LOVED it!! You can’t go wrong with such a warm happy color 🙂
Your quilts/crafts are so fantastic! It’s so nice to find other quilters all around the world!

Coconut Cream – the perfect yellow paint color! I have it in my kitchen, dining, and sitting area. Completely happy with it and it blends so well with many other colors.
I love your pillows! Esp. the one at the very end on the right of your couch. It looks like daisies on top of patchwork. I love it! Do you have a tutorial for it? I would love to use that idea for a quilt for my daughter her name is Maisy and I wanted to make her a daisy themed quilt. I love your blog its amazing! You are really talented! I also love that ruffle quilt and the color combo Aqua/Coral/Green/Yellow. It’s really beautiful! 🙂
Thanks so much! I don’t have a tutorial for that pillow–that one was made for me in one of the Pillow Swaps I participate in. =)
