Birdie Stitches Block #1
Happy New Year!
I am so excited to be sharing the very first block of my Birdie Stitches Block of the Month quilt. =) I can’t wait to see all of the fun blocks that will be showing up over in theflickr group.
Block Construction(All blocks will be constructed in the same manner):
Center square: 8.5″ square
Border Squares: (20) 2.5″ squares
I like to assemble the block before doing the embroidery work–it’s just a little bit easier to hoop it up. Sew together 2 sets of (4) 2.5″ squares–these strips will measure 8.5″long–sew one set to the top and bottom of the 8.5″ center square. Sew the remaining 2.5″ squares into two sets of 6. These will measure 12.5″ long–sew one strip on each side of the block. And Voila! a 12.5″ square block all ready for embroidery. You will find the embroidery pattern below in pdf format.
Birdie Stitches BOM Pattern #1
A couple embroidery notes: Unless noted I used all 6 strands of floss for my embroidery. This pattern incorporates a simple back stitch and french knots. Please note, as I used 6 strands of floss I only wrap the needle once for my french knots. I used a water erasable marker to transfer the embroidery pattern onto my fabric–this was done after the block was assembled.
I hope you all have fun with this block! I had so much fun designing it as well as the blocks to come. I’d love to see your blocks in the flickr group if you’d like to share. =)
Happy Stitching!
Can’t wait to start this….I have tried a couple of different backgrounds, but I guess I’ll wait for Moda to release the yardage of Sunkissed.. I just really like the gray..
Oh, its gorgeous with the snowman!! Come on Mr Postman.. bring me my fabric so I can start!!!
SOOOOOOOO cute! Thank you!
yay! i’m so excited to start this! but i’m not home yet – still on vacation for the holidays. 🙂 maybe i should go to the joann’s here and get my floss, so i can start immediately when i get home!!!
love the little picture, btw – it’s SO cute!
Yay! I’m so excited to get started! I won’t be the first to finish, but I know I’ll have fun!
Thanks!! 🙂
Cool Beans!!! I’m starting on it right now, thank you!
It’s wonderful! I can’t wait to make this!
This is so pretty and I cna’t wait to start. I am putting together a tavel bag with all my supplies so that I can take it with me where ever I go. Thanks again for putting this all together.
it’s so beautiful, i’ve ordered my fabrics!! thank you
I’ve ummed and ahhed enough about whether I should take this on. I’m off to order my fabric 😀 Gorgeous
What a darling quilt block! I love the design and the cheerful colors! It’ll be fun to watch this progress.
Thanks very much for linking to my video tutorials. I’m glad they come in handy.
All the best for 2011,
Mary
OH…I love it! I plan to start it this morning! Thank you so very much. It is so hard for me to get out to a quilt shop for a BOM in the winter time (health issues) and this is a perfect way to enjoy a BOM and it is a truly delightful quilt. I can’t wait to see all the different versions everyone is doing as they come together. Thanks again and BIG, BIG, HUGS for sharing your time and talents with us.
So cute! This really makes me want to learn hand embroidery! Any tips for how to learn? I went to JoAnn’s, but there’s so much to look at as far as supplies. I’d appreciate any advice. Thanks! 🙂
Elena, I don’t know if you’ve gotten any advice on embroidery, but it’s really not that hard! It is super fun to do, and once you get the hang of it, you’ll be so proud of yourself, and you’ll be finding all kinds of things to add embroidery to! 🙂 Basically it boils down to putting the needle up through your fabric, and pushing it back through where you want the stitch to end, and pushing it up, and pushing it down. Needle up, needle down. 🙂 Yes, yes, yes, there is a lot more to it than that, but it can be as simple as you want it to be. Thankfully, Corey has kept this pretty simple with only 2 stitches – the backstitch and the French knot. She posted a note on the Flickr group answering Tiffaney’s question in the Embroidery Tips thread, and here are Corey’s links to tutorials:
Backstitch: http://www.needlenthread.com/2006/10/embroidery-stitch-video-tutorial_24.html
French Knot: http://www.needlenthread.com/2006/11/french-knot-video-tutorial.html
There are loads of good tutorials on the web, and I think those are far less intimidating than going to the needlework aisle at Joann’s! 🙂 Another option would be to find a local embroidery/needlework/stitch shop. Sometimes small craft stores and local quilt shops will have embroidery stuff, too. Those are great resources because you can just ask the staff. MUCH better than asking at a “big box” store. 🙂
Other than those, just ask on the Flickr site — this group of crafters has loads of great experience, and I’m sure you’ll get some help right away. 🙂 I really hope you decide to do the project! It’s going to be great, and you’ll love it when you’re finished!
oh i really love it, i am a french stitcher and i will be very pleased to do this project with you
I can’t wait to start and print the pattern
have a reall nice day and receive all my best wishes for this new year 2011
sandra
I like the idea of assembling the block before stitching. I am ready to get started, and excited too : ) Thank you so much!
piece,
elizabeth
It is beautiful…Thanks !!!
I want to start asap but as a newbie in patchwork/quilting I need a bit of help. One charm pack square cut into 4 will give me 4 2.5″ little squares,
right? I’m doubting my math skills… lol.
Oh it is so cute! I knew it had the birdie in it, but the snowman was a nice surprise! I love it!!! Thank you for making and sharing this joy!!
This so cute. I love it. My embroidery skills are terrible (like 4th grade), but maybe I will try again. What size do you plan as a finished quilt?
Oh my gosh! I am so excited to start this today!
Thank you! I look forward to this one! It’s going to be so cute!
I love it already. I want to start today, but I haven’t figured out what fabric to use. I have a resolution to bust my stash. Thanks for this BOM
Hi Corey, happy new year! Quick question for you – what kind of needles do you use? I can’t seem to get all 6 strands through any of the needles I have, so some needle advice would be super helpful. I’m super excited to get started on my block! 🙂
I am so excited!! It is just too, too, cute. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas and talent. Yippee!!!! I cannot wait to start!
Inquiring minds would like to ask…
You have a white background, what color number did you use for your snowman? It shows up so well?
My fabric is here. My floss has been purchased. What a great way to start the first day of the new year!
Oooh! Like! Like! Like!
Having trouble finding the grey, was thinking of using the Moda unbleached white, but the snowman won’t show up? What do you think might be a good substitute for the centres?
Thank you for the fun project and free pattern!
SO cute! I opened the file and it said 154%, is that what we should print it at or should it be at 100%? Is there some way to know what size the figures should be??
WOOT WOOT!! This is SO cute!!! Thank you very much for sharing your talent with all of us!! I’m excited to get started!!!
So freakin’ cute. If I wasn’t so overextended, I would join you, but I think I better hold back…can always do this one next year! Meanwhile, I will have fun watching it unfold 🙂
What a cute snowman, Cory!
What a sweet little block! I can’t wait to start.
Ohh, that is so cute! Thank you so much. I put a link in my BOM-2011 list on my blog, I hope you don’t mind.
Sorry, had a typo in the link to my blog.
I am so sorry, please ignore my last comment, I found your supply list!
ooooo, I’m itching to start stitchin’ but have to wait for my fabrics to arrive!!!!!!! I’ll just have to admire everyone else’s in the meantime

I just started following your blog and I am SOOOO excited for this Birdie stitch quilt. You are amazing!!! Thanks for posting.
Absolutely cute!
Thanks for such a cute pattern! This will be fun.
I love the embroidery pattern. I have a question. Do you zig zag the edge of the block to reduce fraying before you embroider the center?
This is so cute. Thanks for sharing!
I am almost ready to commit to this. It is so blasted cute. It will be my first embroidery project and I will follow the tutorials you posted. I have similar questions to everyone else about the needle, thread, etc. I have a friend who can help me out hands on. Think I’ve got her roped in too. Gonna order my charm packs today. Like I need another project!! But I think this is so freakin’ cute I can’t stand it!!!
The first block looks great! I can’t wait to get started, just need to get all of my supplies together. I’m already looking forward to see what else you have in store for us!
Can not wait to get started on these! So cute!

This is so cute. This is my first attempt at hand embroidery, I probably didn’t do it right but I’m happy with the way it turned out. This is so much fun. Thanks. I’m looking forward to all the blocks. I will try to find some tips and instructions while I am waiting for the next block. I tried the link you supplied for the video on “the back stitch” but the video wasn’t’ there.
Thanks for the BOM

This block is adorable. I just found your site via another blog, so I’m going to go straight out and buy the materials I need to join in 🙂
So excited! Count me in!
I just found your link. The birdies are soooo cute. Count me in too.
Your stitchery pattern is so cute! I have been eyeing it for a while now and the temptation has got the best of me. I’m in but it may take me some time as I have plenty already going on.
Hi! I’ll try an embroidery block for the first time! I know I’ll like it so much!!!
Hi! I love your cute designs.Thank you very much for sharing.
Count me in,please.
Best regards from Portugal
Isabel
This is so, so adorable! Hope I can find the time to squeeze it in to make it. Love your blog!
This Birdie BOM is just the cutest thing I think I have seen. I love to do embroidery and this is just my style. I bought my fabric and two of the girls that helped me decided to join in. It will be so fun to see theirs and everyone that is on flicker. Thank you so much for your wonderful talent. I am starting and hoping to finish the first block today so that I can be ready for next month. I can’t wait to see what is in store for us with the next 11 blocks.
Ok so this will be my first quilt and my first embroidery attempt! It is a little late to start the January block, lol, but I sewed it together today and hope to embroider it tonight! thanks for the pattern!! Eagerly awaiting Block #2!

Hola!
GOOGLE TRADUCTOR:
Hello!
Sorry to write in Spanish, but do not speak or write English and using Google Translate.
I wanted to thank the BOM, because the designs are sweet and wonderful!
I make a special version of Block 1, you can see the end of this link: http://detodounpococonmismanos.blogspot.com/2011/02/n-422-agradecimiento-y-bom-birdie.html and wanted to find out whether despite the changes, I can post it on the Flickr gallery!
Thanks again for the free design!
A hug!
ok, your help was great. Now I think I have it all set…EXCEPT…what is this stabilizer that I heard people on the Flickr group talking about? Some said they used interfacing, some used the batting of the quilt…HELP! I am going to pick up a ton o’ floss tomorrow. I LOVE the fabric you used here, but I think I should use some of my MANY drawers full of fabric. THEN, when I get the first one done, I can justify buying more fabric, right?! =0)
I am hoping to maybe do a sample of one of the blocks this weekend! Oh, and are the pictures to scale? They come up at 134%…just thought I would ask!
Thanks again for such a stinkin’ cute project!!! =0)
Bientôt le 4!!! j’ai hâte………….Marie – andrée
thanks for the great designs!
I’ll be adding this to my “put-off-everything-else,
and do-this-first” projects!
Love it so much. It is just soooooo cute. It looks like you are using white for the snowman, but you did not have it on your supply list. You have #712-cream, is that what you used? It looks white in the picture.
I’m getting a late start, but no matter. I have ordered gray fabric (which is on backorder) and have downloaded five patterns. I also purchased a jelly roll of Strawberry Fields. Can’t wait to get started……need that gray now…NOW!!!!
i love doing little miss shabby. i have sewn the first three blocks together and it looks great
i am behind everyone but I am so excited to start this project, it combines my love for birds and stitchery.
I made a door decoration using the bird from your pattern! He’s quite the cute little fellow!
