Goodness–I can’t believe that we are already on Block #10 and that it is October–this year has really zipped by, hasn’t it!? Next Sunday, my youngest daughter, Elonie, turns 3–can you belive it? The same age Chloe was when Elonie was born–I can hardly believe that!
For Block #10 we’ve got our little birdie with some pumpkins and a few spiders…now, I hate spiders so…I completely understand if you prefer to leave them off of your embroidery–I would never have believed that I would have a quilt with spiders on it!
Birdie Stitches Block #10
Block Construction(All blocks will be constructed in the same manner):
Center square: 8.5″ square
Border Squares: (20) 2.5″ squares
I like to assemble the block before doing the embroidery work–it’s just a little bit easier to hoop it up. Sew together 2 sets of (4) 2.5″ squares–these strips will measure 8.5″long–sew one set to the top and bottom of the 8.5″ center square. Sew the remaining 2.5″ squares into two sets of 6. These will measure 12.5″ long–sew one strip on each side of the block. And Voila! a 12.5″ square block all ready for embroidery. You will find the embroidery pattern below in pdf format.
(Note: If you ever have trouble with the size your pattern is printing out at, be sure that your page scaling is set to “none’ prior to printing)
A couple embroidery notes: I used 6 strands of thread for all of the embroidery. This pattern incorporates a simple back stitch and french knots. For the spider bodies, I used a satin stitch(I opted not to pad or outline). Please note, as I used 6 strands of floss I only wrap the needle once for my french knots. I used a water erasable marker to transfer the embroidery pattern onto my fabric–this was done after the block was assembled.

This project has been so much fun. I am making it for my daughter who is due in seven days with a little girl. My grandson helps make the templates and everyone has made a stitch or two to have their work part of the quilt. What a very talented lady you are and thank you for sharing your patterns. We kept the quilt a secret for so long but then we couldn’t stand it anymore because they were so cute we had to show my daughter the surprise.
Love the new block. I just realized that I had not started my October block yet, I don’t know where the time goes. I will have to get right to it.
