Birdie Stitches Block #9
Well, last month at this time I was talking about not wanting to send little miss Chloe off to 1st grade. We are now on day #8 of first grade which started out “slick” as Chloe called it, we got a little bit of drama on day #4, which carried over with a few tears on day #5 (nothing too major & all was well once Chloe actually got to school). On day #5 Chloe also announced that 1st grade was way too much school(she went every other day in Kindy) & wondered how many more days until the end of school–she was not thrilled with my response of “200ish?”. Days #6 & #7 have been fabulous as she has been chatting it up with her best friend about a little sleepover she is having on Friday. Whew!…a lot has gone down in the first week of school–it’ll be interesting to see what the rest of the year brings!
Block Construction(All blocks will be constructed in the same manner):
Center square: 8.5″ square
Border Squares: (20) 2.5″ squares
I like to assemble the block before doing the embroidery work–it’s just a little bit easier to hoop it up. Sew together 2 sets of (4) 2.5″ squares–these strips will measure 8.5″long–sew one set to the top and bottom of the 8.5″ center square. Sew the remaining 2.5″ squares into two sets of 6. These will measure 12.5″ long–sew one strip on each side of the block. And Voila! a 12.5″ square block all ready for embroidery. You will find the embroidery pattern below in pdf format.
(Note: If you ever have trouble with the size your pattern is printing out at, be sure that your page scaling is set to “none’ prior to printing)
A couple embroidery notes: I used 6 strands of thread for all of the embroidery. This pattern incorporates a simple back stitch and french knots. Please note, as I used 6 strands of floss I only wrap the needle once for my french knots. I used a water erasable marker to transfer the embroidery pattern onto my fabric–this was done after the block was assembled.
We have some stellar blocks over in the flickr group. Be sure to add yours–I really enjoy seeing them!
Poobum… I was hoping to have my last block finished before you posted this one… guess I should have sat on the couch stitching tonight instead of websurfing LOL
Another beautiful block I can’t wait to sew!
Oh, I just love it…thanks

So cute! Can’t wait to start on this block…I have been caught up eagerly awaiting Septembers!
Talked to my daughter in MO tonight (I’m in San Diego). My grandson Logan started 1st grade a week or so ago. I asked if things were still going well. She said there had been some problems with him talking in the hall, but otherwise things were good! Little ones are so cute…and honest! I just found you and the birdie blocks a few days ago. I’m loving them. You are too clever….8-)
OMG this is my favorite one so far! I’ll be using the pattern on more then this quilt block. I just have to catch up with the rest of you!
I can relate to the emotional rollercoaster of starting school. On the first day of school my kindergartener cried when I dropped him off. Which broke my heart. Then when I picked him up he said he had WAY MORE FUN with HER than he had ever had with ME. Which totally crushed me. Then the next day he cried because he didn’t want to go. Needless to say, I didn’t cry that day. 🙂
Love the embroidery block…my favorite!
Adorable – thank you again Corey!! I’m all ready to start block number nine!
Oh yay! One of the highlights of the beginning of a new mnth is seeing what you have decided that little birdies will be doing! I <3 fall, and this is so sweet! Thank you once again! I am still on March…maybe I will skip ahead, since this is inspiring me?!? Thanks for getting me interested in quilting AND in hand embroidery!

Hey Kris–in the above blog post where it says Birdie Stitches #9 in green, that is where you click for the printable pattern. If for some reason the link is not working for you, you might try updating your Adobe Reader. An uninstalled update can sometimes cause Adobe Reader to not read pdf’s properly.
I love it! Thank you so much! I’m enjoying it every month to embroider the block! designs are simple and gorgeous! My sincere congratulations! A hug!
