Moda Block Heads Block 21 & 22
Happy Wednesday and welcome to another week of Moda Block Heads. Today, I have the information on two blocks, block 21 (from last week) and block 22, this week’s block.
First up, Block 21 from last week, is designed for us by Lissa Alexander. It is the “XOXO” block. Many of you have probably already downloaded the pattern last week but in case you missed it in the Facebook group, here is the Moda Block Heads Archives where you’ll find the link to the pattern. As I’ve mentioned previously, this is a wonderful site to bookmark if you haven’t already done so!
For my block I used Apricot & Ash fabrics which come out in August. They are going to be so pretty to use in all of your fall quilts!
The next block is our block for this week, Hen and Chicks, brought to use by Laurie Simpson. You will find the block pattern on her blog.
For this block, I used Sugarcreek fabrics which are in quilt shops right now. Because I was using all the same fabrics for my 9 patches, I opted to piece the block slightly differently creating 9 patches by using strip piecing rather than cutting individual squares.
If you are making the 6″ blocks and wanted to do the same, you would need to cut (2) strips 1 1/4″ x 11″ of the print fabric and (1) 1 1/4″ x 11″ of the background fabric. Sew these strips together along the long edge with the background fabric in the middle. Press to the print. Subcut into (8) 1 1/4″ segments. You will have room to trim.
Then, cut (2) 1 1/4″ x 6″ strips of the background fabric and (1) 1 1/4″ x 6″ strip of the print fabric. Sew these strips together along the long edge with the print in the middle. Press to the print. Subcut into (4) 1 1/4″ segments.
Sew the segments together into 9 patch units.
The background rectangles are cut at 2″ x 2 3/4″, you’ll need four of them.
Happy Sewing!

Thank you for sharing this easier way to put this block together!! Hope you have a lovely day.
Have a wonderful day yourself!
Corey, Please let me know when Holliberry will be shipping to shops. Thanks
It ships in July.
This is such a cute block. I might have to do this in a whole quilt. And thank you Corey for giving us an easier way to cut and sew. I just cannot imagine cutting out and trying to sew 1 1/2” pieces together 🤦♀️ and have a good outcome.
I love this block. Thanks so much for the strip piecing measurements and directions. So much easier. I have been making 9-patch blocks with 2-inch squares for charity baby quilts alternating with solid background blocks, so this block is quite familiar. I like the center being a contrast fabric. Will be going through looking for a cute little flower or other motif to fussy cut for the center. I always check your blog to see your spin on the blocks each week! You have such good ideas.
Your method is so much more logical to my mind. I’ll be making the 8″, but will have no problem adjusting for that!
