WIP Wednesday & a Giveaway

I have finished up the quilting on my reindeer pillow and the binding has been sewn down.  Has anyone had any luck machine sewing down binding?  I have tried several different popular machine sewing binding tutorials and I am never happy with the way it turns out.  Unless, the front and the back stitching line up perfectly I am just not happy with it.  Any tips or tutorials that worked for you?  Until then I will be hand sewing my binding…plodding along… =p

For the quilting on this pillow, I did an all over stipple, not over Mr. Reindeer, and then I did something a little bit different(for me).  Aurifil sent me a fantastic package of thread to try out several weeks ago.  One of the things that I have been playing with since receiving my fun thread package  is using the heavier 12 weight thread to straight line machine quilt.  I had planned to hand quilt the straight lines over the stippling but instead, I machine quilted them.  I used a longer stitch length for the straight lines but other than that I didn’t make any changes to my machine/needle.  I am so pleased with the way that it turned out.  Totally makes me want to try doing a white whole cloth quilt using straight line quilting and a rainbow of 12 weight Aurifil thread–how pretty would that be!–and since Aurifil thread comes in 100s of colors it would be a breeze to choose some pretty ones.

The folks over at Aurifil were also kind enough to send over 5 thread samplers for me to give away to 5 of my readers.  So, If you’d like to try out some fun thread leave me a comment.  If you aren’t into machine quilting, the 50 weight thread is perfect for piecing–some threads mess with your seam allowance just a bit which doesn’t seem like a big deal until you start putting together all the blocks.  Even 1/16 inch adds up over the piecing of a whole quilt.  US entries only please for this giveaway.

And awesome thread giveaway! Thanks for the opp.

  5. Tiffany says:

Would love to try out some new thread! And I love Mr. Reindeer – so cute! I never get my machine binding to line up on both sides so I just make sure it is super cute in the front and its ok if there is some “flap” on the binding in the back. I agree tho – I prefer it perfect and therefore hand sew the binding down most often.

  6. joan s says:

I also prefer to hand sew my binding though I’ve seen some people do beautiful bindings all by machine. Sometimes for baby quilts I will attach the binding to the back of the quilt first, then use a decorative stitch on my machine to finish it from the front.

Oh and I’d love to try out the beautiful Aurifil threads!

  7. nicke says:

  9. Judith1005 says:

I really like the fabric you used for your new pillow. (Sweetwater is fast becoming a favorite line for me.) It came together adorably. I’m sure your little girls will both be wanting one. I really like the stipple quilting you used with the straight line quilting. I haven’t tried that line of thread yet. It sure has nice colors. Well thanks for the opportunity to enter your giveaway.

  10. Tamie says:

Absolutely would love to try out some new thread.

  18. Kelly says:

i love that quilting idea! i’ve never used (or even heard of) the heavier thread, but i love the look of what you did!

also, i strictly only machine bind now. given this stage of my life (2 small kids and pregnant), it’s the only way that i can get stuff done in a timely manner. i discovered machine binding about a year ago, and was able to crank out 3 quilt bindings in just hours. mine are not perfect, though, so i may not be any help to you.

  19. I love this reindeer!! I found a tute on machine binding this morning that I am anxious to try… if it winds up being good, I’ll share 🙂

Thank you SO much for the giveaway 🙂

  20. Marcia K says:

  23. Sara says:

Such a cute pillow… love it. Thanks for the chance to win the thread, I’d love to try Aurifil (in such fun colors too).

  24. Beth says:

Last time I bought Aurifil thread to use in my machine it snapped every couple minutes. I have no idea what I was doing wrong. Any ideas? I bought a new spool and an going to try again. My machine is about the cheapest one available so maybe thats the issue.

As far as binding – so far I have only done a hand binding, but for my current (huge) quilt I am planning on trying a tutorial (I cant remember where I saw it) for using a zig zag stitch, that tends to give a bit mroe room to play with.

    Thanks for the opportunity!

  25. Lisa says:

Well, I’m from Canada, so I guess that disqualifies me! Love your cute mug rug.

  26. Love the quilting on your little deer pillow Corey! And I’d love to try some new thread.

  27. Gina f. says:

I think the tradeoff for saving time binding by machine is not as neatly finished. Nothing compares to hand stitching in my experience.

  28. laurel says:

    i’ve never tried aurifil!

  29. Angela says:

Same here – tried lots of machine binding and not happy with any of it. Even when it’s done well, I’m not a fan. I think I just prefer the look of hand sewing the back, although I’ve done machine on pillows in the past for added strength.

  30. Jennifer says:

I love your reindeer. He’s so cute. I’m just starting with machine quilting and had never thought of quilting over quilting. It looks cool!

  31. Nancy says:

I can always use more thread and I really need to branch out and try new colors and types. So thanks for the giveaway that might help me do so.

  32. Becky M says:

  35. Sherryl says:

I’m with you – love the look of handbinding, but hate the time it takes. It seems we are not alone – no one else seems to have luck with machine binding either. (sigh) Love your reindeer (oh that face!). And thanks for the chance to win the Aurofil. I’ve heard lots of good things about it, but haven’t had the chance to try it yet.

  36. Denise :) says:

I love Aurifil threads, and would be very happy to have some to play with!! 🙂

  37. PattyC says:

I would love a chance to try some Aurifil thread – Please include me in the drawing.

Your pillow is too cute !!

  38. Krystal says:

The pillow turned out really cute. The first thing I noticed in the pic at the top was the straightline quilting. Turned out great!

  39. amy g says:

Those look awesome! I’d love to try them out 🙂

  40. Melissa says:

I machine bind so that the line of stitching is below the front of the binding – it makes a straight line along the edge of the front borders and I like the look 🙂 I don’t have any pictures though, so I hope this makes sense 🙂

  41. Rebecca says:

Adorable pillow! I’ve been wanting to try Aurifil for a while – thanks for the chance!

  42. Ruth B says:

So cute…inspires me to try to draw some of my fabric characters. Your quilting is beautiful too. Love Aurifil threads…my fav!!

  43. Tiara says:

Love your pillow, it’s so adorable
Thanks for the giveaway, would love to try out the thread on machine quilting. I feel like I have been hearing a lot about this thread lately but am not sure if it’s at my LQS or not.

  44. Cheryl says:

I agree on the binding. I just stitch it down in the back by hand. Did I mention that I dislike doing binding? Love Aurifil thread, tho.

  45. Sara says:

love the reindeer! thanks for the giveaway.

  46. Pat says:

I’d love to have these threads. What a great early gift for my birthday these would be! I’m with you – I have never been happy with my binding when it is machine stitched, so I always stitch it down by hand.

  47. Mary says:

I’d love to try the thread! Thanks for having the give-away to you and to Aurifil – and that’s a really cute pillow.

  48. Sheryl F. says:

I have never tried Aurifil Thread but would love to try it.

  54. Angie says:

Your reindeer pillow is so cute!! Thanks for the great giveaway!!

  55. Judy says:

Yes, I would like to try out the thread you used on your pillow.
Have you tried to round the corners of your pillows-much easier
    binding!

  56. Wow, Corey, I love your little reindeer! So cute!! And wow, what a fab giveaway, I’ve really been wanting to try Aurifil!

  57. Amy says:

    Love your reindeer!

  58. Lynette says:

(oooo! I would love some Aurafil! Thanks for the chance)

Your reindeer is adorable all finished up. I greatly prefer hand-finishing almost all my bindings. The only time I don’t is charity quilts that will get washed a lot and when I have a minky back.

If I machine stitch the binding, I do it backwards: I sew it onto the BACK, not the front, then pull it around to the front and topstitch very close to the edge. There is usually a little mismatch on the back, but it’s negligible, doesn’t usually show at all after a washing (no show whatsoever on the minky), and the front is perfect, which is mostly good enough for me. But I still get weird drape sometimes, so I still REALLY prefer hand-finishing.

  59. I’m in Canada, pull another number if I win (wouldn’t this be *the* time!?) (Or..I could chip in for shipping…there, now there’s no chance for me haha)
I like to sew my binding to the back & then machine stitch to the front. I’ve tried other ways & this is the only way that works for me. I use a bobbin thread that matches most of the quilt backing fabrics because it shows (but doesn’t bother me). If I am really trying to impress someone, I use a bigger seam allowance to sew it on the back & that way when I machine stitch the front, the back stitch is ‘in the ditch’. It takes longer & sometimes I end up with stitching on the binding, which I then rip out. So I usually don’t try to impress anyone!

  60. Sarah says:

Unfortunately, I’ve never been happy with machine binding either. I use the invisible ladder stitch to hand sew binding and it goes pretty quickly.
I bought a couple spools of Aurifil 40wt to try out a couple weeks ago. I like it immensely. Would love to try some other colors and weights!

  61. Alli says:

Wow, the 12 wt thread on your reindeer pillow is really striking!

I love Aurifil thread and am slowly accumulating more colors. 🙂

  62. Abby says:

the pillow is SO cute! I haven’t been pleased with the look of machine finishing binding, so I continue to finish by hand. It’s the only part of the process I do by hand, but there’s just no comparison with how the finished product looks (in my opinion)

love the weight of the heavier thread – I might have to try that sometime!

  63. manybooks (Linda) says:

what an adorable reindeer 🙂 and I had totally planned to try machine binding my pointsettia quilt the other night and as much as I feel the same way about hand binding (plodding along……) I just couldn’t bring myself to try it on the machine! Because I think it wouldn’t be perfect enough. and who would notice but me? No one. But I still couldn’t do it LOL. Ugh. Thanks for the chance on the Aurifil – I would love to try some!

  64. kathy h says:

I really like using the aurifil thread for my hand applique but haven’t tried the other weights yet. Would love to try them. I love the sweet little face on your reindeer.

  68. Four dogs and one quilter says:

I have not been happy with my machine sewn binding either, although others have mastered that technique. Since I enjoy handwork, I still do my binding by hand. Love Aurifil thread, thanks for the giveaway.

  69. Joan says:

I have never been successful with machine binding. I just hunker down and hand stitch it myself. Great give a way. I have not used Aurifil thread yet, but maybe this will be my lucky day!
    🙂

  70. Judi says:

I’ve heard so much about this thread. I would love to try it out!

  71. Heidi says:

    Cute pillow!!!

I have tried machine binding and we do not agree. I sew the raw edges (if double folded) with my machine to the front and then sew the folded edge to the back. It is the only way I am completely happy with a piece.

  72. PameliaJane says:

    Cute project!
I would LOVE to try some Aurifil. I keep hearing great things about it, but have never tried it.

  73. Tricia says:

    The reindeer is really cute.

  74. Nancy says:

I haven’t liked machine binding either. I’m too much a perfectionist & can’t stand it being wonky. Aurifil is awesome – I just started using it for my own quilting. It’s pretty much lint-free.

  75. Tiffaney says:

    What a fun giveaway!

  76. Carla V. says:

Aurifil is a great thread for all sewing projects. I love how it “sinks” into the fabric when hand sewing a binding.

I have been hoping to win some of this to try. Everyone seems to like it.

Can’t enter the draw but I LOVE your pillow. The quilting is fabulous!

  99. Mandy M says:

I’d be interested in someones tips of machining binding as well. I just posted one I did with machine binding today. I really didn’t like the way it turned out sewing the binding on the front flipping the binding to the back and sewing from the front. My best is to sew it on the back, flipping it over to the front and machine stitch it from there. That is my best way, you can even use one of those fancy stitches we have on our machines but never use.

  100. Ellyn says:

I keep hearing about these threads, would love to try them out for myself & see what all the hoopla is about!

  101. Rita E in AZ says:

I would be thrilled to try these threads that I have been hearing so many good things about. Thank you for the chancek.

  102. Karen Wilson says:

I do a lot of machine sewn binding but it definitely has a different look front to back so I don’t think I’d use it for a cushion. I guess unless you used something like a zig zag stitch over the edge because then it could catch both the front and the back the same way (but I’ve never tried that).

That heavy weight thread really does make a nice quilting effect. I haven’t done much experimenting with different threads yet but I will have to try!

And sadly I’m not in the U.S. so I can’t be entered in the giveaway 🙁

  103. Barb says:

    Oh…I would love some samples….thanks!!

  104. MarciaW says:

  111. Lisa says:

Roody would be a cute name for the little guy. Love holiday pillows. Not had much luck with the machine binding. I did uses a decorative stitch one time and used a bottom thread the color of the binding so if i miss stitched it would blend in more then stand out on the back side. Its been a while since I have used Aurifil.

  112. Jenny says:

    fun pillow!!

  134. Dawn says:

I love the pillow, I am using Count down to Christmas fabric in a quilt. Thanks to you and Aurifil for the giveaway.

  135. Mom C says:

Cute pillow. If you want an invisible binding then I think you have to do it by hand. I’ve gotten so I don’t mind the seam showing so much and I like the crisp edge I get with the machine. I sew my binding to the back and then bring it over to the front. I pin it just over the seam line and if I’ve done a good job pining, most of the seam on the back is very close to stitch in the ditch.

  136. Lisa says:

Oooo, those thread samplers are lovely! I love straight line quilting.

  137. Beth H says:

I love using Aurfil thread and it would be fun to have some new colors. I also have been trying to improve my sewn on bindings. I have tried the fusible thread in the bobbin and that has helped me. I think I am going to try the tip from Mom C as well. Thanks. Love the pillow too.

  138. Sherry says:

I would love to win the thread sampler. Your reindeer pillow is adorable!

  139. Renee says:

I just started using Aurifil thread about six months ago and really enjoy using it! So far it doesn’t twist up, break easily, runs smooth through the needle, and doesn’t get fuzzy. But so far, I’ve only been able to afford one spool (gray in color), so getting a sampler of colors would be really nice.

  140. Suzy says:

I love this reindeer! You always make such cute blocks!

  141. Debra L says:

I love the colors you used. That green is great for Christmas!

  142. Anne says:

Your reindeer is even cuter with the quilting, and I didn’t think that was possible. 😀

I’d love a chance to give the aurafil thread a try. Thank you!!

  143. Susanne says:

I don’t like sewing down binding with the machine too. It just looks perfect when sewn down by hand. That is my most favourite step when making a quilt. Relaxing and you can do it on the couch. So no need to find a better way by machine 😉

Would love to try Aurifil 🙂

    Susanne

  144. Dorian says:

    Cute little reindeer!

I have hand problems, and can’t hand sew my binding down anymore. So I’ve learned to machine do it. One thing that really helps me is to use an open toe foot. That way I can see exactly where my needle goes. You have to sew in the ditch, not even a tiny bit off, or it will be off in the back. Keep practicing, you’ll get it!

  145. Kristen Fuhriman says:

I love this thread!! Would love to win a sample pack!!

  146. sarah says:

Beautiful threads. I would love to try them out.
    The varigated ones are awesome.

  147. diane says:

Funny you should ask…I’m SO excited about machine binding right now…I did two quilts in one day! I followed Red Pepper Quilts instructions and it came off beautifully! I used lots of pins, but yesterday at quilt group one of the ladies said she uses fabric glue, like the stuff for applique that washes out. I may try it next! I hope you do it, I’m so impressed with myself! 🙂 it turned out so good!

  148. diane says:

p.s. oh and yes, I use one of the open toe feet on my machine, it helps in seeing the “ditch”.

  149. Robin W. in MS says:

I’m a hand stitcher of bindings too but Mom C’s suggestion (comment 124) of sewing binding to the back so any misalignment does not show on the front is very interesting.

I’ve done a little straight line quilting on mug rugs and table runners, but I want to branch out into stipple and the dogwood pattern that I just saw on the Oh Fransson! blog yesterday…

Mr. Reindeer is a cutie pie!! I like to hand stitch bindings in front of the evening t.v. with hubbie watching his favorite show. Aurifil is super thread and would really like to win your giveaway.

  154. Mollie says:

I haven’t done any machine quilting on my new machine, but my mom has a medium arm quliting machine (which she is trying to sell) and a long arm quilting machine that I have played around on a few times, but never finished a project.

  155. Sinta says:

That was so nice of them to offer a giveaway on your blog! Please put my name into the drawing… I hear it is awesome thread:)

  156. Love your cute pillow! I’m not very good at machine binding either~ unless i use one of the fancy stitches on my machine, those always catch everything. 😉 I would love to try the thread pack! Thanks for the chance!

  157. Julie says:

That pillow is so stinkin’ cute! I also have a hard time machine binding. The one time I finally decided to do it I used a zig zag stitch so I would have a better chance of keeping on top of the binding on both sides. I’m too much of a perfectionist to try a straight stitch! It looked good but I’ll continue to hand stitch in the future.

  158. Anita R says:

Very cute pillow! I would love to win some thread 🙂 Thanks for the chance!

Cute little reindeer! I would love to try the Aurafil thread. It’s one of the few brands I haven’t tried yet, simply because I don’t buy thread unless I need it for a specific project. I have enough trouble controlling my fabric hoard and didn’t want to add thread hoarding to the mix, lol.

  167. Shanon says:

  174. Thea says:

I agree – its hard to beat binding by hand. If I’m in a hurry, I’ll use a zig zag stitch. My bindings are never perfect though. I just tell myself that instead of having a humility block, I have humility binding :).
Adorable reindeer pillow! I’d love to try the thread.

I LOVE machine binding. One of the reasons I love to quilt is that it isn’t hand work intensive like crocheting or needlepoint. You work and work on a quilt and then have to hand sew the binding? No, not for me. It works best for me if I sew the first raw edge onto the back (opposite of typical binding) so when you finish on the front you can cover any wild sewing lines that you wouldn’t want to see on the front. I realize this method will never be perfect, but it works so much better for me.

  178. Sarina says:

Cute pillow! I love aurifil thread! Thanks for the chance to win some.

  179. Deborah in Atlanta says:

Your reindeer pillow top is ADORABLE! You did an excellent job with it. I’m a new quilter, and always end up buying my thread as I get ready to start my next quilt. After buying all the basics (machine, self-healing mat, rotary cutter, pins, etc) and then the fabric, thread always seems to be a luxury bought at the last moment. So…I’d love to win. Loev to win.

I’d be happy to help out with more questions if needed. I finished binding a queen size quilt recently in about 1 and 1/2 hours time. Eureka! Jane
