Beautiful Day Mystery BOM Update
Good Morning!–I am happy to be sharing more information with you about the Beautiful Day mystery block of the month.
The first thing you may have noticed is that I am now calling this block of the month the “Beautiful Day Mystery block of the month” rather than Cotton & Joy. =)
When I named the block of the month, I didn’t realize there was a quilt pattern designer with that same name. It’s such a cute name and the perfect company name for a quilt pattern company!
Because of this, I’ve renamed my mystery block of the month to simply “Beautiful Day Mystery block of the month”. If you wonder why I’m no longer referring to it as Cotton & Joy, that is why. =)
Secondly, I know you’ve been waiting to know when the kick-off date is for the first block release.
I will be releasing block 1 on February 19, the third Saturday of this month.
Going forward, new blocks will be released on the 3rd Saturday of each month. Yay! I love weekend sewing so I hope having a Saturday block release will be fun for you as well. I debated about releasing them on Mondays to start of your week with a bright spot but in the end decided on Saturday.
More and more fabric shops have been receiving their shipments of Beautiful Day and it’s been so much fun to see their pretty display photos & videos popping up over on Instagram.
If you missed the fabric requirements, you can find them in this blog post.
If you’ve looked through the fabric requirements, you have noticed this block of the month requires 20 fat quarters plus yardage. I’ve recommended the Beautiful Day fat quarter bundle because it also includes the panel we’ll be using. I’ve gotten questions about the possibility of using a fat eight bundle or two fat eight bundles plus purchasing the panel in addition.
Yes, you can use 2 fat eight bundles plus the panel in place of the fat quarter bundle of Beautiful Day. Additionally, you could get away with just one fat eight bundle plus the panel if you don’t mind making scrappier blocks. There is enough fabric in one fat eight bundle for the blocks but not necessarily enough of each fabric to make the blocks exactly as I made them…especially if you want to starch your fat eights before cutting.
One of the other questions I’ve been getting is how to sign up for the BOM. There is no need to sign up. You will just want to follow along here, on my blog. All of the patterns will be released here. You can sign up for email notifications of when I share a new blog post. You’ll find the spot to sign up for email notifications on the left side of this page (you may need to rotate your device if you are viewing this page on a phone/tablet).
You can also share your block progress, fabric choices on Instagram using #beautifuldaymysterybom and you are welcome to join the Coriander Quilts Group on Facebook. If you are requesting to join the group, please make sure to answer all of the questions. The group is a very friendly group of people and everyone is always so kind to answer any questions that come up.
I’m excited to have you all joining in on the Mystery BOM. It’s going to be fun. If you have a question about the BOM, be sure to leave it in the comments so I can answer it for you.
Have a wonderful day! Corey
Most beautiful fabrics ever~
Thank you!
I’m so excited! Thank you for clarifying the Cotton and Joy issue…I was thinking I was losing my mind because I couldn’t understand the connection – ha ha!
I can’t keep up with all of the new pattern designers! There are so many good ones. =)
Hi Corey, I’ve been starching my fabric. I just love this collection. The feel of the fabric is scrumptious. So looking forward to the Mystery quilt.
It has such a nice hand to it! Getting fabrics ready for a new project is always such fun.
Is there enough yardage in the fat quarter bundle to make the sashing cornerstones in the red on your Fabric Requirements guide?
If you were to piece your blocks using the same fabric choices and placement that I did, then yes there would be.
Love your fabrics! Is there enough fabrics to be able to starch and not be worried ?
Thank you & yes! 😀
I am thinking about starching too….do you starch the whole backing as well? Thank you!
I don’t…nor do I pre-shrink my batting.
It is a beautiful collection! I pre purchased a layer cake a while ago which I know will not be enough. I will be using my stash fabrics instead. Will there be an alternative layout that can be used if we don’t have the panel?
No there won’t be. You would choose a different fabric in place of the panel.
I am doing the Heartfelt Charity QAL with Fat Quarter Shop and just let me say! The fabrics are so beautiful!! Beautiful Day was the perfect name for this collection! One question about the Beautiful Day BOM~ How many months will it last? Thanks Corey!
I’m very excited to begin this BOM!! I have the fat quarter bundle, but I’ve not seen that the yardage is available yet. Is the yardage needed in the beginning?
If you have your fat quarters, the panel, and background fabric you will have what you need to begin making the blocks.
I have a question about starching. I’ve starched my fat quarters, then started to wonder about starching the panel. I’ve not used a panel that I had to cut apart before. Just want to make sure it’s all right to starch the panel. Thanks.
I starched my fabrics along with the panel to test this out for myself. And yes!…I had no problems with starching the panel.
If I had a fat quarter and a fat eighth of Beautiful Day, would that be enough for both this sew along and the Heartfelt sew along?
I can’t say for sure–the Mystery BOM takes 20 FQ and Heartfelt takes 17 plus 1/2 yard cuts of some of the prints. You might also run into problems needing more of the prints with the colored backgrounds while having extra of the prints with the light background.
Thank you!
Is there enough fabric in the FQ bundle to do the BOM and the Heartfelt sew along?
I don’t believe that there would be.
Drop a note if you see yardage availability for : outer border and backing. Thanks!
One of my local shops: https://millersdrygoods.com/ has Beautiful Day loaded into their online shop. You can also google “beautiful day fabrics” and you’ll get options popping up that way as well. Additionally, several of my local shops have Beautiful Day in store but not listed online yet so if you have a local shop give them a call to see if they have it in store even if they don’t have it online. And if you are on Instagram, I’ve seen many shops there posting that their yardage has arrived. Some of those shops have used #modafabrics so you can use that to pull up some of those shops.
Yankeequilter.com in Seymour, CT has the entire line in yardage. They would be more than helpful to cut which fabrics you’d like and ship them to you!
Thank you for sharing that information!
Love to see this mystery.
It will be fun!
I love your Beautiful Day collection and am going to sew the Beautiful Day Mystery BOM. I’m ordering the fabric now.
Hi Corey any suggestions on how I can make this quilt smaller other than not adding the borders. I really struggle with large quilts so I usually make lap size. I have your FQ bundle and it is gorgeous so I would really like to make this quilt. Thank you!
You would just want to make less blocks. The quilt, as designed, will use 20 blocks. I would suggest you make either 9 (for a square quilt) or 12 (for a rectangle quilt). If you were to make the 9 block quilt, you would make 2 blocks per month…this would leave you with one extra block to use either as a pillow or to piece into the back of the quilt. If you opted to make 12 blocks, some months you would make two blocks and some months you’d make 3 so that you ended up with 12 total.
Thank you so much. I appreciate your help and I love this fabric!!!
Hi, I am ready to order the background fabric and am torn between the bella solid white and the Beautiful Day White on White. (In some pictures the White on White looks gray.) Corey, can you help me decide? I like the crispness of the Bella solid white but I was going for a small design in the background fabric but I don’t want it too gray. Wish a store nearby had a sample! thanks!! I apologize if this gets posted twice…I wasn’t sure the first one went through.
It’s so hard to tell in photos, isn’t it! If you’ve ever purchased any of my other lines, the white background has been the same in each. It matches Bella solid in the color 9900-200. A little trick if you don’t have a nearby fabric shop is to purchase a mini charm pack or charm pack online. This allows you to see all of the fabrics within the line in person and decide just what you’d like to purchase.
Great idea! I’ll order a charm pack 🙂 Thanks!
When I placed my order online for the background fabric (9900-200), it was labeled ‘off white’. I hope I ordered the correct fabric?
That’s the correct one. =)
How embarrassing…the white on white was right in front of me in the fat quarter bundle…!! I love it
Oh good!–I’m so glad you could see it in person. =)
Will we use the whole panel? Would it behoove us to cut the 8 1/2” squares beforehand?
We will need 20 of the panel squares for the quilt along. I’ll talk more about cutting on Saturday…but yes, those will be cut into 8 1/2″ squares.
Just want to ensure about panel that came with fat quarter bundle that we will be using for bom quilt. The panel I received has white background only, no red. Is this correct?
Yes, we’ll be using the one with the white background that comes in the bundle. =)
Hi Corey, just want to say that Beautiful Day is absolutely beautiful. Since I’m doing the Heartfelt and also the picket fence quilt pattern in beautiful day decided to do the beautiful day mystery in apricot and ash. Can you list the colors in this one like you did for the coriander Christmas quilt. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Thank you
How do I sign up for this MYSTERY BOM
