Panel Cutting Video

Happy Monday!  This morning I wanted to let you know that I just released a quick video showing you how I cut apart the motifs in my panels.

The first block pattern in the Beautiful Day Mystery quilt along releases on Saturday.  Since we are using the panel in our quilt along and many of you may never have used a panel/cut one apart, I wanted to share how I cut apart the motifs.

I hope this video is helpful!  You can find my Coriander Quilts – YouTube and the panel video here.

I also wanted to let you know that I will be releasing a tutorial video each month with the release of each Beautiful Day Mystery block.

I’d love if you’d subscribe to my channel. =)

Marketplace is my $5 pattern of the month in my Etsy shop. You can find it here.

Thank you so much for stopping by!  As always, leave me any questions about the upcoming Beautiful Day Mystery quilt along and I’ll do my best to answer them! Corey

I have a question – for the Beautiful BOM and the Heartfelt Charity BOM – is the same fabric line being used? Can I vary it to another fabric group if I want? Thanks looking forward to these projects!

    • Corey says:

Yes!—Beautiful Day is the featured collection in both projects. You do not need to use a specific fabric collection for either sew along. I do suggest using either Beautiful Day or Apricot & Ash for the mystery sew along so you have the panel to use.

thank so much for your reply. I did order the Beautiful Day fat quarter bundle and panel and plan to use for the mystery quilt. Pondering what I’ll do for the Heartfelt BOM. Ha, I’m already behind on both?!?!?

Did you press the panel block fabric?

Thanks for the opportunity to stitch along on this adventure with this gorgeous collection! Do you have any idea when 108 backing fabric will arrive in shops? If it might be delayed or limited in availability how much fabric do you recommend for the backing? Thanks so much!

Hi Corey, After watching your video about cutting the panel, I took mine out from my fat quarter bundle, and measured the outside motifs to make sure I had enough white fabric around the edges. Whoops, out of the 12 motifs that make up the the outer edges of the panel, 6 of them have a 1/4” or less from the edge of the motif to the raw edge of the panel. So one edge of the motif will be right on the seam line, and the other side will have a wider white border around it. Any suggestions? I’m going to see if I can get another panel. Thanks.

    • Corey says:

Yes!..first off, we will only be using 20 of the squares from the panel yardage…so you can dismiss the four that have the least amount of white border. With the other two, if they aren’t too shy of 8.5” square, you could opt to use a slightly narrower seam allowance when sewing to the center. Or, the other work around would be to add a narrow border around those two blocks. To make the border blend in, I would use Moda Bella solid in the color 9900-200 and cut strips at 1” wide. Sew to the sides of the panel square along with the top/bottom…press the seams open. And then, trim down to 8.5” square. Does that make sense?.. it’s so helpful to know how to make the panels work when something like that comes up.

      • Corey says:

And I should have added that you probably only have to sew the border to the short side of the panel square. I used this technique recently on another project and I’ll share photos of those on my Saturday post so you can see what I mean.

I’m using the apricot and ash fabric line. When you release the blocks will you be referencing which fabrics you would use from this line of fabric?

I am so looking forward to this project! I have my fat quarters starched and ready, but have to order border and backing fabric. I was wondering if you had any alternative suggestions for the border fabric, maybe a bit more colorful? I’m assuming there will be a lot of white background so I thought maybe one of the other large prints would be a nice contrast?

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
