Calliope Quilt {A FREE QUILT PATTERN}

Raise your hand if you saw this pretty picture over on my YouTube page last week. =) If you did, you knew that a new [FREE} quilt pattern was coming today. Tiggsy is the best quality control inspector (even if he sleeps on the job sometimes). =)

Introducing the Calliope quilt along with a free quilt pattern and block tutorial! This quilt pattern first made its’ appearance last year (almost a year exactly) on my Moda Mystery box video. PS…if you’ve never watched that video, it’s a fun one! In that video, I designed a quilt using some the notions I received as well as two fun fat quarter bundles (Sweet Liberty by Brenda Riddle & Mix It Up by Moda Fabrics).

I made two quilt tops in that video…first, a pastel version:

If this quilt looks familiar, it’s because I just shared this quilt back from my quilter a couple weeks ago in another video. David beautifully quilted this quilt for me.

The quilting design on this one is called City of Fountains & I think it is such a lovely quilting design!

David also quilted the other quilt top I made in that video and I shared that finish as well. It’s almost the reverse of the pastel version:

For this version, I used low volumes for the background and then pops of red for the frames.

David used the Boujee quilting design on this quilt.

In preparation for the pattern release, I have made an additional two more Calliope quilt tops. As I mentioned in that video almost a year ago, this quilt top is much simpler to piece than you might think. It’s one of the reasons I was excited to share a tutorial/pattern for this quilt.

The 3rd quilt top I made using this pattern features Moda Bella solids and black/white polka dot fabric. The B/W polka dot fabric comes out this summer in my Coriander Colors line of fabric.

This quilt makes me laugh as, to me, it has such an 80s vibe. I’ve been calling it my “saved by the bell” quilt. =)

Or maybe a fun springtime quilt at the very least!

For the 4th quilt top, I asked my daughter Chloe what fabrics to use. She suggested a pink version. I pulled various pinks from some of my fabric lines and came up with this version (it’s the version you saw at the top of the page):

It turned out so pretty! We have just a couple fat quarter bundles of this “Chloe” version if you’d like to purchase a bundle. BUNDLES HAVE SOLD OUT.

One of the neat things about this quilt top is that it requires 16 fat quarters…no background fabric—just the fat quarters and you are on your way.

These tops come together so quickly…as I mentioned it’s a simple quilt to piece. Calliope finishes at 45″ x 60″ making it a nice throw sized quilt.

It’s also an easy quilt to enlarge by adding extra blocks or borders.

Now, I need to get these quilt tops off to David to quilt up for me! If you’d like to make a Calliope quilt of your own you can download the free PDF quilt pattern below.

Download the Calliope quilt pattern here.

Be sure to watch the Calliope YouTube video to see all of the quilts/quilt tops and for a block tutorial!

You can watch the video here.

Thanks so much for stopping by and have a wonderful Saturday! Corey

Oh, this is pretty! Thank you for the pattern and tutorial!

  2. Donna says:

I like this pattern. You should make an FPP for this too! I bet it would get the FPP’ers to make it if you did an FPP version. Not that I’m techy, but I would think that it might be easy to make one for this.

I liked Chloe’s quilt. The fat quarter bundle is gorgeous.
I don’t know how everyone gets so many quilts done.
Love your UTube channel for I learn something new
    every time I watch.

Thank you so much for this pattern. You were so right it is so much easier than it looks! I pre-ordered the Starberry fat quarter bundle which I’m so excited about, I’m thinking this will be perfect for when it comes in! Your quilts are so beautiful thank you for sharing 😍

    • Corey says:

It would be a perfect pattern for the FQ bundle of Starberry. You’d either be able to make two of them or make one larger quilt. I like that you don’t need any extra background fabric. =)

  6. Donna Sproston says:

Love this pattern. It is a stash buster for sure. Thank you so much!

  7. Diane Emerick says:

Thanks for this fun pattern. Such a different look depending on fabric choice. Love “saved by the bell” definitely puts a smile on my face!
The quilts and fabric that you design are beautiful. 😊

    • Corey says:

It’s so interesting how different each quilt looks depending on the fabrics and choices of lights vs. darks. That “saved by the bell” quilt is a fun one—I can’t wait to see it quilted up–the quilting is going to be so pretty on all of those solids!

  8. Marcy Henri says:

I definitely remember Saved by the Bell! I do love the quilt in solids. But I’m trying to sew my stash as much as possible–except for Shoreline & Starberry 🥰
I have WI State Shop Hop fat quarter fabric bundles (red, white & black) designed by Lisa Bongean that would be fun to use.
What a beautiful spot you have for taking your outdoor photos!

    • Corey says:

Saved by the Bell was a Saturday morning favorite!

This quilt would be awesome in red/white/black (those were also my high school colors—another throwback) =)

Thank you for the free quilt pattern. I am going to make it in shades of green. What is your design wall made of, that the pink blocks are displayed on? I do not have full walls in my sewing area. I have two log support columns I could put a tension bar between. Thank you!!

    • Corey says:

It’s the Fons & Porter design wall. It’s very similar to a shower curtain. I can put it up and take it down easily when I want to use it.

Thanks Corey! It is always nice to have a pattern that uses those fat quarters i have tucked all over the place!

  38. Sarah Yoffa says:

Hey, Corey I did see that post on Insta/FB and liked the pretty quilt but I didn’t take time out of my garden planning and Saturday cooking to get online. WOW what I missed! Love this pattern and appreciate that you’re giving us this quilt block/pattern for free! What a sweet gift–and a tutorial on top of the free gift? double WOWza!

I confess I had so little faith that I would ever try that block since it has so many points to line up but THEN I watched your tutorial and it really looks easy with the nesting seams incorporated into your pattern. I’m sew glad I found you Corey! Calliope will still be a skills builder quilt for me, but you have taught me so many cool tips and tricks these last few years. THANK YOU 🙂

  39. Laura Carr says:

iove this new pattern. So many ideas in my stash!

  40. Donna Jachim says:

I tried to download this free pattern, and I had to download Google in order to get it. Is this correct?

  41. Suzanne says:

Thank you Corey for the lovely pattern and I love your enthusiasm for everything – it makes me smile every time. I love all of the versions but for some reason the solid colours with the polka dots in the centres would be my favourite. Looking forward to seeing it quilted. Again, thanks for all what you do.

  42. Mary Davidson says:

Thank you for the fun pattern. Your samples are so pretty! Great video, too!

  43. Gwen Malinowski says:

I love all of your samples. I have so much blue in my stash that it will be the first color I try. Having the amount of strips to cut will come in handy so I can use pieces that are not full FQs. Thank you for the pattern!

  44. Carol Fogleman says:

This is Wow! I think I’d like to make it bed size. I believe if i made it 12 blocks wide by 12 blocks long, it would end up 90″ square. I wonder how many fat quarters that would take?Maybe 3 times the stated amount? What do you think?

  45. Adriene says:

Quick question: what is the fabric line in the first quilt on this page? I believe it was the first quilt you made with this pattern.

  46. joanna says:

Corey, thank you for being so generous with your expertise! Looking forward to working this up for a granddaughter.

  47. Karen Rossi says:

Corey, I unrolled my Peachy Keen jelly roll and audibly gasped, because the fabrics are soooo pretty! I using “Jelly and Jam” to make a quilt. I think this will be a good choice because all the fabrics will be featured. I have a question: Do you design your fabrics and patterns on the computer or draw them by hand? What a gift to have beautiful ideas in your head that you can transfer to fabrics or patterns for others’ enjoyment! Thank you!

  48. Janeen says:

I am just infatuated with this beautiful pattern and seeing all the variations that others have posted on facebook. Thank you Corey for keeping the spirit of quilting exciting.

  49. hndzoff says:

Hi Corey. I just found you on FB and love this quilt. I sew for charity and would love to expand on this size – 60 x 80 – and it looks pretty easy to do. I’m going to give it a try. I’ll let you know how it works out. Thanks for making this an easy quilt to make.
