Choosing Fabrics for a Scrappy Quilt
As we are preparing for our Scrappy Irish Chain scrap-along over on YouTube, I’ve received a number of questions about the how-to of choosing fabrics for a scrappy quilt.
I’ve taken some time in today’s video to go over a lot of information! I don’t necessarily think that there is a right or a wrong way to go about choosing fabric for scrap quilts. And some people take an “anything goes” approach to scrap quilts which is a lot of fun too.
But, my guess is that there are many of you who fall into the same category I often land in for scrappy quilts…planned scrappy.
If you like to have a little bit of a plan for your scrappy quilts, or if you’ve made scrappy quilts and haven’t been quite happy with them, this video might be helpful for you. I can’t claim to be an expert but I’m happy to share how I approach making scrappy quilts…I love them!
If you missed out on hearing about the Scrappy Irish Chain Scrap-Along, you can read more about my quilt along plans for this year in this blog post. It includes a link to the free, Scrappy Irish Chain quilt pattern.
Have a wonderful Wednesday! Corey
Wonderful video about choosing colors and prints. Thank you for taking the time to make provide this. I can now approach scrap quilts with much less hesitation and I’m looking forward to sewing this Irish Chain. The one question I do have about pulling from scraps is wether or not all scraps should be prewashed or just the ones that could possibly bleed.
Thanks,
Cindy
I don’t prewash my fabrics so my scraps aren’t prewashed either. I’ll sometimes have a scrap that’s been pre-starched but not that often. Prewashing is always a good idea on fabrics that are known problem causers i.e. reds/purples etc. I always use shout color catchers for the first several washes on my quilts.
I enjoyed your inspiring video on how to choose fabric for a scrappy quilt! I love controlled scrappy! 😃
I’m glad you enjoyed it! =)
If you are choosing the fabrics from yardage it is not a scrap quilt. If it isn’t made from scraps it isn’t a scrap quilt. UGH!
I see your point Judy! I tend to view “scrappy” quilts in regard to how they look rather than where the fabrics come from.
After watching your awesome video I decided to use all Bonnie and Camille fabrics. Since I am a fairly new quilter (quarantine) I have almost no scraps, so I am buying Jelly Rolls and scrap bags of their fabrics. I just need to choose my neutral. You are such an inspiration Corey! Can’t wait to get started on this super quilt. It’s going to sew much fun!
That will be a beautiful quilt!
Just finished watching todays YouTube video on choosing a color palette. Absolutely fabulous! Will watch agan and again. Thanks for your expertise. So informative.
I’m so glad you found it helpful, thank you!
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. I’ve been doing quilting for a long time but never really paid attention to designers. Until just recently. So glad I found you & a couple of other designers that I really like. This tutorial was such a big help. I am so happy I found your YouTube.
Thank you Linda!..it’s been fun sharing more over you YouTube. =)
I can’t find the link for the free scrappy Irish chain pattern you talked in your utube video today.
It’s in the description box right below the video (but above the comments). If you are on a computer it will be in a gray box. If you are on your phone, you’ll need to click “more” in small letters underneath the title of the video.
Thank you for a really great video – very informative and helpful!
Would love to receive your giveaway. It looks beautiful.
The Moda blockheads quilt that you showed is absolutely beautiful. Do you sell the pattern for it?
