Local Shops and Restaurants to visit
Happy Friday Friends! Today is another Sewcialites block release day. As I don’t need all of the blocks for my final quilt, today is one I have opted to skip. So instead, I am going to be sharing some of my favorite quilt shops & restaurants in the Holmes County, Ohio area.
But first, I wanted to make sure that you had the link for the Sewcialites block that is being released today. All of the blocks that have been released so far can all be downloaded here–so be sure to bookmark this link! This is the handiest spot to visit to download the blocks. Click to page 2 for today’s block. =) We are on block 32 today and it is designed by Chelsi Stratton. You will find all 32 blocks to download at that link.
And now, on to some of my Holmes County Faves.
Holmes County, Ohio–where I live, is home to the world’s largest Amish population. About 50% of the people living here are Amish and I think nearly all of the remaining population has Amish relatives. My grandma was Amish growing up and my father-in-law was Amish growing up. I no longer have Amish at my extended family get togethers but we do at my husband’s.
Holmes County remains one of the top tourist destinations in Ohio year after year. And for quilters, it is a wonderful spot to visit for fabric shopping. I get asked frequently, what my favorite local quilt shops are. So, I thought I would share a list here to point people to when I am asked. I also wanted to share a few of my other local food favorites…because, shopping and eating seem to go hand in hand. =)
First Up, Quilt shops:
1. Plaid Sheep Company is located on the east edge of Berlin. I shared a bunch about this quilt shop in this blog post. (One note: all of the quilt shops in the area carry a selection of my fabrics…some of them get in the full lines and some carry a curated selection…many of you wonder which shops carry my fabrics–you will find them in all of the quilt shops on this list with the exception of Zinck’s, the last shop I mention which is a little bit of a different type of fabric store).
2. Helping Hands Quilt shop is located in the center of Berlin, Ohio. This quilt shop has been around for many years and is one of the first quilt shops I remember going to when I was young (I am going to talk about the very first one I remember going to in just a moment). This is also the quilt shop that my mom and I went to, to pick out all of the fabrics for the quilt she pieced and hand quilted for me when my husband and I got married.
3. Miller’s Dry Goods in Charm Ohio (about 5-10 minutes from Berlin) This is the very first quilt shop I remember going to. I wrote a very detailed blog post about this shop here. If you are shopping with your husband, you can send him to Keim Lumber (it’s just a two minute drive or so). And if you are shopping with a bunch a quilting friends, you might want to check out the quilt retreat lodging next door to the quilt shop, The Rural Thimble. It is wonderful for groups of quilters–be warned though, it books up very quickly and pretty far in advance–so make sure to book your reservations early.
4. Somewhere Sewing in Millersburg Ohio This quilt shop is located just west of Millersburg about 20 minutes from Berlin.
5. Lone Star Quilt shop in Mt. Hope Ohio Mt. Hope is about 10-15 minutes or so from Berlin. This is an Amish-owned quilt shop. They don’t have a website but you will find their Facebook page here.
6. Mercantile on Main in Coshocton, Ohio was a 2014 featured quilt shop in the Quilt Sampler Magazine. Coshocton is about 35-40 minutes from Berlin.
7. Anything Sews is located in Dover, Ohio and is about 35-40 minutes from Berlin as well.
8. Carlisle Fabrics is located in Sugarcreek Ohio which is about 15 minutes from Berlin. I grew up in Sugarcreek and it inspired my Sugarcreek line of fabric. =) No website for this shop, but you will find there Facebook page here.
9. Zinck’s Fabric Outlet is located in Berlin Ohio and is a bit different than the other shops mentioned. It is not a quilt shop but rather an outlet type fabric place. They purchase from manufacturer’s overstock so sometimes you find wonderful prices on hidden gems but other visits you may not find as much. And they carry much more than just quilting fabric…you will find all sorts of fabrics as well as notions and other things.
What road trip is complete without good food? We have a lot of great places to eat–many of them are Amish cooking, but my favorites are not–so those are the ones I want to share with you.
- Rebecca’s in Walnut Creek, Ohio is about 10 minutes from Berlin. It is the cutest little cafe serving breakfast and lunch. Do be prepared for a wait if you are coming during the busy months. If you like antiques, there is a really cute little Antique shop two shops over that I like to visit when I go to Rebecca’s. I really like Rebecca’s Vanilla Chai (it is sugary, custardy goodness) and their house salad dressing is so tasty.
2. Park Street Pizza in Sugarcreek Ohio (about 15 minutes from Berlin) is a place we order from almost every weekend. I love their Farmhouse Salad with Blackberry Balsamic dressing, my oldest daughter gets the same salad but with grilled chicken and bleu cheese dressing, my youngest loves their boneless BBQ wings, and hubby usually gets the Colossal Italian pizza. If I am doing pizza, my fave is either the veggie pizza or the chicken pesto. Prepare for a wait at this spot during those busy months and weekends.
3. East Main Kitchen is located in Baltic, Ohio which is about 20 minutes from Berlin. We love their Fried Cheese Curds. They advertise “comfort food with a twist” and that sums up their offerings well. Very tasty.
4. Olde World Bakery & Bistro is located right beside Plaid Sheep Company (the first quilt shop on the list). We don’t eat here as often but it’s worth mentioning because of it’s convenience to Plaid Sheep. It is a nice lunch spot.
And the last spot I want to mention has my favorite baked goods…we especially like the cinnamon rolls and fry pies.
5. Hershberger’s Farm & Bakery is located on the west edge of Berlin. This place has grown by leaps and bounds over the last number of years and is pretty much always busy. Aside from the bakery, they have a petting zoo and a store, as well as a food stand where they serve grilled burgers, chicken sandwiches, tater tots, fries, ice cream sundaes etc. I prefer to pop in right away when they open at 8 if I am purchasing anything so I can avoid the crowds. The baked goods are still warm and the selection is best. As I mentioned above, we like the Cinnamon rolls, fry pies…and I also like their homemade bread. But they have lots to choose from!
This is a very small chat about some of the things we like in this area. There are so many more food places and fun shops to visit….I could go on and on! =) If you are planning to visit, be aware that all of the shops are closed on Sundays and most shops close at 5pm during the week with restaurants closing at 8pm. I mentioned the “busy-ness” at some of the places during our busy months. October is the busiest month of the year and traffic gets crazy. It starts getting busy in April (especially weekends) and stays busy then through October. If you can visit during the week, Tuesday or Wednesday during those months it will be nicer traffic-wise.
I hope this info helps you if you are planning a visit to the area, or maybe it’s convinced you that you need to! =)
Chat again soon, Corey
Thanks for the thoughtful post. I live nearby (southern Wayne County) and there were a few surprises here for me. I shall check them out!
It’s so fun to find some new spots to visit. =)
I love how you said minutes from Berlin, Ohio instead of miles lol. I thought that was only an Illinois thing.
Minutes is so much more helpful, isn’t it! =) I never know exactly how long something will take in miles–and it can vary so much depending on traffic for that area.
We visit often but haven’t tried all of the eateries mention I will keep the list.
Oh good!
I love your post on Berlin and surrounding areas. We just visited last week, stopping at quilt shops, antique stores along with having a wonderful breakfast every morning in Walnut Creek. Your list of favorite spots is so helpful, adding more fun to the places we haven’t seen yet. Calls for another trip! Lol. Thanks Corey!
You are so welcome!–as you well know, there would have been a lot more places I could have mentioned!
That was a wonderful look at your part of America.
Your fabric lines are always beautiful and inspiring.
Thank you
DJ
Thank you!–there is so much more to see and do here but as a quilter, the quilt shops are so much fun to share about. =)
Now I have a list of fun places to visit the next time I go home. Home is Zanesville but I always visit Berlin. Thank yhou very much for sharing.
You are so welcome!–Berlin is such a nice day trip for you!
y husband and I visit Berlin at least twice a year and were just there in April. The Plaid Sheep and Rebeca’s are several of our favorite places we visit when we go to Berlin as well as several antique shops.
I really enjoy our antique shops as well. They are so much fun to visit!
I love this round up, especially for the eateries but that’s only because I am familiar with the fabric stores already. 🙂
I am sure you know all about the fun quilt shops!
Hello, Corey. What can you tell us about the 2021 Quilter’s Gathering in Berlin? I understand you are one of the three speakers/teachers for this year’s event. My friend and I have already made our hotel reservations at the host hotel. Also, our eldest granddaughter (who is getting married on June 26 in Maryland) lives in Dellroy, so we know we’ll be making frequent trips to your area.
What questions did you have?–you are more than welcome to email them to me! There is also a website that will be updated soon I believe that might answer some of your questions: https://www.quiltersgatheringinberlin.com/
Since we have never been to this event before, perhaps you could give us an idea of what to expect. Will there be classes, and will we need to bring our machines? The last email I received said that May 15 would be the date to learn about all the activities, but we haven’t seen anything yet. I’m really looking forward to meeting you because I love your fabric collections and your design savvy.
I have been to 8 of those places, will have to check out the rest. I just bought your Charm pack Spring Brook at Anything Sews Fine yesterday and fat quarters of the same line on Tuesday at Ohio Star Quilt shop in Akron.Love it!
Oh perfect!–thank you!
We visited Holmes County several years ago and I bought my first Amish quilt. I was so excited about getting it and it is on our guest room bed now. We loved visiting there and i would love to go back at some time. I love your fabrics and am working on your quilt along. Thanks for your creativity!
Thank you so much! It is a wonderful place to visit for us quilters and piecers!
Hello Corey. I have been to Holmes County so many times I can’t count. Town and folks are always friendly. Love the Quilt Shops and the eateries. Thank you for sharing about the shops and the eateries I have not tried but will soon. Love all of your fabric lines and glad I now know where to find them. My hubby loves the shops and will call my attention to items he thinks I might like.
I’m so glad you like it here!–there is so much to see and do. =) There’s such a nice selection it keeps both husbands and wives entertained. =)
Hi Corey! I just got back from Holmes Co! It was me and my three sisters. We had a great time there. We got to some of the places that you mentioned. I will have to tell them what we missed LOL. Maybe a four sister retreat in Holmes for 2022! Thanks for sharing.
I’m from Canton but live in Florida now. Can’t wait to visit family this summer and visit some of these shops and eateries! We always visit Berlin with my in-laws. 😊
I was born in Ohio, my grandma lived in Wooster. Sadly I don’t have close relatives left to visit. I live in Pennsylvania now and get to Lancaster county as often as I can. Thank you for the destinations, maybe I can visit again now that I’m retired!
Thanks Corey for your suggestions. We will be there in June for a few days, meeting up with 3 grandkids from PA. Hope they will allow me to visit at least 1 quilt shop. Now I need to find us a room since we no longer motor home.
Thanks for the list! I live in Coshocton County and get to visit Holmes Co. fairly often – and hope to get back to that soon as the pandemic restrictions lift! I visit Mercantile on Main quite often since it’s just 15 miles from my house – glad to mentioned it along with the rest. There are a few places there that I MUST explore… soon!
What great memories you brought to mind with this post. I live in the UK but for many years visited friends in Wooster and spent a lot of time travelling in Amish country, quilt shops and resturants. My flying days are over and although I still have friends in the area we do not meet in person. Love your blog
I live close by in Coshocton. Love going to Amish Country. I know of all the places mentioned. I love your fabrics. Just bought some Spring Brook at Mrs Millers in Charm and Lone Star in Mt Hope.
So neat to have a fabric designer so close to us. Good luck with your business.
Thanks for the info on Holmes county shops and restaurants. I visit the area a lot, but learned of some new restaurants to try. A visit to Holmes county is the best!
Thank you Corey! We had chatted a while back about all of these wonderful places but now it’s ll on here and I can look at it when I map out my trip! I visit Lancaster spa every year and sometimes 2x a year. But now they my eldest lives in Michigan the drive to see her definitely has a “pit stop” for a day or 2 for sure! Happy quilting!!
Thank you Corey! Once I retire, it’s on my bucket list to drive across the country and visit quilt stores along the way. I will definitely add Holmes County to my list of places to visit:)
p.s. I love your fabrics!!!
Thank you so much for your post re: quilt shops and places to eat in and around Holmes County! My husband and I made a road trip yesterday to five of the quilt shops and I had such a fun time! Everyone was so friendly and helpful! Now I have 5 bags of fabric to sort through including Spring Brook, of course!
