Moda Blockheads Round 5 (Group 2): Block 17
Welcome to block 17 of Moda Blockheads round 5. This week our block is brought to us by Vanessa Christenson.
You can download the free block pattern here.
Because this week’s block, is similar to the Ohio Star block we had a couple weeks ago, I wanted to make sure to choose fabrics and fabric placement to set it apart from the Ohio Star block. By the way, interesting quilt block fact, did you know that quilt blocks can have different names even if the piecing is the same based on fabric placement? It goes to show how different the same block looks based on fabric choices and fabric placement. If any of you follow Robin Pickens weekly Color Studies in the Moda Blockheads Facebook group, you know how true that is!
You can see this weeks block and the Ohio Star block (bottom right) side by side above. For the block this week, I made the center (on-point) square more prominent. I could have brought even more attention to that center square by choosing a dark fabric instead of the light peach. I could have also focused on bringing attention to the rectangles framing out the center square to give it a completely different look. But, I didn’t want to lose the star shape…it would have looked something like this:
Of course, Tiggs had to stop by to see what was going on:
He thinks things are shaping up nicely. =)
Have fun piecing your block this week! Corey
Loving all your blocks they are coming out beautiful.
Also love your weekly comments and videos I receive by my email
Thanks so much for reading and watching!
Beautiful! I just love love love your fabric blogs patterns and videos 😍
Thanks so much!
Tiggs is right, your fabric choices are purrfect. 😉
He’s so funny!
Just to let you know your layout of the block is different from the layout on the instruction sheet. I love the fabric that you are using! Thanks for doing this.
In the blog post, I shared why I placed my fabrics as I did. =) Fabric placement makes so much difference in a block!
Corey – I just love your emails and videos. I am not new to quilting but you can certainly teach an old dog – new tricks. Just love the way you change the fabric around. I am going to try that – looks like fun (as long as there’s no math) LOL. Thank you for all your ideas and guidance.
Thanks so much! Changing fabrics around really makes a difference in a quilt block!
Hi Corey! I look forward to your Wednesday posts to see how you will place the fabrics. Do you know off the top of your head how many 6″ and 12″ blocks we will need for your BH layout? I wrote the info down but can’t find it… Thanks!
I’m going to need (20) 6 1/2″ blocks and (16) 12 1/2″ blocks.
Thanks very much! I finally decided on my barn star center and am going to catch up on blocks this weekend. 😻
