Moda Blockheads Round 5 (Group 2): Block 23 (Alternate Block)

Today’s block is another beautiful paper pieced block brought to us by Sarah Watts. Because I am opting to skip all of the paper pieced blocks this round, I have opted for a different block.

If you would like to make today’s paper pieced block, you will find the PDF download here.

I decided to make a scrappier version of the “Not Quite a Sawtooth Star” block I shared here on my blog back in 2014.

The difference between this block and a traditional Sawtooth Star block is the length of the star points. You’ll see in the little gray/yellow block that the star points don’t extend all the way to the outer edge as it would normally. This allows the star to “float” in the center of the block. For my block this week, I opted for this same construction but made a pieced center and chose scrappy low volume prints for my whites.

If you’d like to made this little block for your quilt, you can download a graphic that shows the measurements of the pieces needed to construct this block here.

Additionally, the blog post where I originally shared about this block is still available and includes a bit more information about the piecing (for the 12″ size–the construction would be the same for the 6″ size).

Thanks so much for stopping by and have a wonderful Wednesday! Corey

Corey, thank you for the link. I do dislike points of stars disappearing, esp if they’re on the border of a quilt and might disappear with long arming then sewing a binding on. This option solves this dilemma completely!

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
