Scrappy Irish Chain Cutting Information

In today’s YouTube video, I am sharing the Scrappy Irish Chain cutting information, along with pattern updates.

You can watch the video here.

The Scrappy Irish Chain Pattern is available for free here.

Note: there are a few updates needed to the pattern as follows:  Under cutting instructions, you need (24) 2.5″ x 6.5″ rectangles not (24) 6.5″ x 6.5″ rectangles. The (10) strips 2.5″ x WOF are your binding strips. Under block assembly in the first step, you need 12 pink squares (instead of 4) and 4 white squares (instead of 12). In step 2, you will only need (65) 2.5″ scrap squares (not 66).

I’ve also put together a downloadable background cutting guide.  You will need 3 yards of background fabric.

Download the background cutting guide here.

If you are joining in and will be making your quilt from precuts (in place of the (989) 2 1/2″ squares) here are the various precuts and amounts you would need:

(2) Jelly Rolls

(2) Layer Cakes (if you are unable to cut 16 squares from your Layer Cake pieces, you will need 3 Layer Cakes)

(7) Charm Packs

(25) Mini Charm Packs

(18) Fat Quarters

(42) Fat Eighths

And lastly, if you are joining in on the Scrap-Along, you are welcome to share your progress pictures over in the Facebook Group.  If you are not already a member, when requesting to join, be sure to answer all of the questions to be approved more quickly.

Happy Cutting! Corey

Super excited for this stash buster!! I’m doing a year of Christmas quilts, so every new quilt I start will be using my Christmas stash (which is slightly out of control). I was able to find 16 Mini Charms that will be perfect for this quilt. and It made me happy to find a Holliberry for this SAL!

I very recently found your blog and tutorials. I have Springbrook line that I bought for a quilt but as of yet I have not started it. I have a healthy collection of scrap fabric and that is what really made me want to do this Irish Chain, plus I have never done an Irish Chain before.

    • GM! Thanks so very much for the background cutting guide. It’s also good to know that my two (on order) jelly rolls will be enough to go along with the Bonnie and Camille scraps I already have. I am going to cut my background fabric while I wait for them. Cheers!

I see that the pink and white are solids…would blenders work?

Thank you for your wonderful video, chock full of excellent information. I especially liked your detail about colour choices and a cutting guide…whoohoo! Just the kind of plan I like. I’m trying to downsize, so this is coming at an excellent time for me. Talk about a Happy New Year, LOL.

I’m looking forward to participating in this quilt a long. But wow! 989 squares takes a long time to cut! lol Almost there. Can’t wait to see the finished product. I am using a green grunge in place of the pink.

Hi Corey, I have just discovered your YouTube channel. I am going to join the scrappy Irish chain quilt. Love your channel

I love scrappy Irish Chain quilts and was excited to find this one! I have a LOT of older jelly rolls and 5” squares – and have a small bin full of 2-1/2” squares – all in my favorite 1800s repro fabrics. This will be my leaders & enders project for 2023 – just finished the blocks for 2022 so need a new one. Can’t wait to get started!!

  15. I’m new to your blog and youtube videos but I am so excited about the Irish chain sew along! I have been trying to “tame” my scrap collection so this is perfect!

I loved your video, Corey! Just one thing I’d like to confirm, though — your video states we need 2-1/2 yards of white fabric while the cutting instructions say 3 yards. Is that because the original instructions stated to cut the binding strips (10, 2-1/2″ strips) from white fabric? Also, how much fabric do I need for the gray (originally pink) squares?

    • Corey says:

I would go with 3 yards. That’s what I used and you can see in the cutting guide above how the pieces fit on 3 yards of fabric. You’ll need 1 1/2 yards of the pink/gray fabric.

Hi Corey! I absolutely love all your fabric lines and have several bundles waiting for a new quilt home! For some reason I had never found your blog but am so glad I stumbled upon your YouTube videos. I printed out this pattern a while back but am so glad I hadn’t made it yet without the corrections. Thank you for the cutting guide! You remind me so much of a dear friend I lost last year. She was cute, funny and had a spunk and beautiful smile just like you! You look so much like her it’s uncanny! Love watching you and look forward to your next line.

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
