Sewcialites Round 2, Block 2

You’ll be happy to know (or maybe not!) that my block for this week went together much better than last week’s block.  It was so fun to hear how many of you appreciated that my block last week was fussy for me. =)  I think that light-hearted snafus as we are piecing blocks can be an encouragement.  I enjoyed hearing from you here on my blog as well as over on Instagram that my block mishaps last week were encouraging for you. =)

I’ll be the first to admit that sometimes blocks just don’t go how we planned them to and that’s okay!  We’ll get it next time or the time after.  Or maybe we won’t, and that’s okay too!

Anyways, on to today’s block…Tussy Mussy designed for us by Susan Ache.

You can find the block pattern here.

For my block this week, I pressed just as the pattern showed rather than pressing everything open and I also made sure not to work ahead too far in the pattern on the stitch/flip units.

I switch my sewing machine feet between two different feet when I am piecing.  I use one foot for stitch/flip units and a different one when I am sewing a 1/4″ seam.  Because of this, I tend to do all of my stitch/flip units at once and then switch the foot just once to sew the pieces together.  Chain piecing like this saves time but it does require me to pay a bit more attention to the pattern as I am constructing units out of order.  My 1/4″ foot has a seam guide so it doesn’t work well for stitch/flip units.

My fabrics for this sew along are a mix of Buttercup & Slate and Spring Brook…they mix beautifully together.

I’ll be back tomorrow with another block for our Oh, Happy Day! Sampler Sew Along.  Happy Sewing! Corey

Hi Corey, I was right with you last week. I wished they had eased us into the process with a bit easier block. I found it confusing as well. I also piece as you do, with two different feet, and doing everything with the sew and flip foot first. My machine enables me to save two different stitch settings. Now I just have to coordinate the right stitch settings with the correct foot, Yikes! When it all comes down to it, everything is a creative opportunity 😌. Thanks for all your inspiration.

What brand and model machine are you using for piecing? Does it work well for machine quilting? We’re hoping to downsize in the next couple of years and I’ll have to give up my longarm. I’ve started looking for a solution to replace/consolidate my longarm and multiple sewing machines.

I use this Juki: https://amzn.to/3U2vAND for my piecing. I don’t do a lot of machine quilting on it but I have been happy with the little that I have done.

Well, I have not made my block from last week yet. After watching Kimberly and seeing your block (even though I think I like it better than the original design!) I’m not sure I want to cut up that bundle of Spring Brook only to mess up the block! And I’m thinking after watching Kimberly today that maybe I will sit this one out too. Both blocks look like a real stretch for my somewhat limited piecing skills. Corey, yours turned out great! Love your fabric of course! I think I need someone in my sewing room to do it with me as I follow along with them doing each step.

You are a master at these cute little sized blocks, Corey :)! I always look forward to seeing them, and am amazed at how exact you get them, with all those tiny pieces. It really inspires me.

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
