Blockheads Round 4 Layout Information

A couple weeks ago, I shared my planned setting for this round of Moda Blockheads.  You can see it pictured above with a few of the blocks added in.  Today, I am sharing the fabric requirements and piecing information if you’d also like to use this setting.

Setting Details:

This setting uses (25) 9″ blocks and will finish at 72″ square.  This means you will not need quite all of the blocks that are being offered.  I really like having a little bit of extra wiggle room in regard to number of blocks used.  I can pick and choose a little bit which blocks I would like to include.

This setting is also really handy because you can go ahead and piece all of the units that you need and then sew the blocks together as you finish them.  This means there won’t be a lot of finishing to complete once the blocks have all come out in September.

For my setting I ended up using the same white/white pin dot I’ve been using for my block backgrounds.  I had used up all of my yardage from Cozy Up and am so glad to add it back in my stash now that Coriander Seeds is in quilt shops.  I had thought I might use the gray pin dot for the other fabric in the setting but decided to use Moda Bella Solid in the color Etchings Charcoal.  It is a warm, dark gray that creates a nice contrast to frame out each block.

If you’d like to use this setting for your blocks you will find the pattern below.

I have also filmed a video where I’ve shared some additional pressing tips that I couldn’t easily include in the pattern.  If you watch the video and follow those tips for the quarter square triangles, they will nest beautifully when you sew them together.

You can watch the video here.

Thank you so much for stopping by & Happy Sewing! Corey

I love this layout, Corey. I’m printing your instructions for future use. I’m not sewing Moda Blockheads, because I’m in the middle of too many projects, but 9” blocks are my favorite. Oh, by the way, just the other day I finished my FQS Designer Mystery 2021 quilt, YAY, and will be shortly going to my longarmer!

It’s such a handy layout to have on hand for any 9″ blocks! And YAY! for a quilt top finish…that is always so satisfying!

  3. Thank you so much for taking the time to create this adorable setting for 9″ blocks! I already chose my first BH4 setting (Moda’s in-house layout3 design) but this is so cute I might have to find something else to use it on. The big X secondary pattern is one of my favorite blocks ever so I was immediately hooked just for that but the tips on how to press to make it lay flat (flatter) is just icing on this cake! Thanks 🙂 I am definitely saving this one

  4. Thank you so much for sharing this setting—it’s just beautiful! I’m sometimes at a loss about how to set up my blocks from these quiltalongs. This one is much simpler than it looks. I first thought your blocks were on point. I appreciate you sharing this pattern…I’m thinking about using it for another set of blocks I’ve had laying around…lol…my blocks from the first Blockheads!

You are so welcome! It’s always fun when a block or a setting is simpler than it actually is! This layout will work so nicely for any 9″ blocks you may have just waiting. =)

Thank you for this striking layout. I have done the 9 inch blocks in blue and white and then the 5 inch blocks in other fabric for a smaller quilt, so your layout will be perfect for the 9 inch blocks. I love that this layout is not busy but frames the blocks so well. I will be starting on it as soon as possible and love that I can have lots of the layout done by the time I finish the blocks.
    Love all of your designs.

Hi Corey! Which of the Cozy Up fabrics will you use for backing and binding? I’m following you examples with this fabric for my Blockheads 4. Love your work!

    • Corey says:

Thank you so much Nancy! I haven’t yet decided what I’ll be using for the backing/binding. I have to see what I might have on hand…I’d be inclined to use the white large floral from Cozy Up for the backing but I don’t know if I have enough. For binding, I’d maybe use the orange pin dot or I might pull a gray stripe from one of my other collections.

I am finally looking around for settings and I really like what you have done. I am going to make it larger to fit on a queen bed and I think that won’t be too hard. Thanks so much for the detailed instructions and tips.

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
