Moda Block Heads Block 23

Lucky Penny Quilt Block

Hey Guys!–it’s block #23 this week for Moda Block Heads.  And it’s brought to us by Vanessa Goertzen of Lella Boutique.

You will find the block pattern on her blog here.  For my block, I dug into a Canning Day Mini Charm pack.  My block is a 6″ block so I trimmed down the (16) 2 1/2″ squares I used.  I still thought it was faster than cutting from my scrap fabrics.  And goodness knows I have plenty of mini charm packs.  I store some of them in an old cookie jar/penny candy bin I purchased at a local antique store.

And this is just a small portion of my mini charms.  They are so much fun to collect.  I decided that for my Lucky Penny block I wanted to keep my fabrics in color order.  That’s easy to do when using a mini charm pack because you can just leave them in the order they are already in.  I skipped some of the squares here and there but left them in order and it gives such a nice rainbow look.

When piecing all of these snowball corners (aka stitch and flip corners) you will want to press all of the seams open.  This will allow the seams to come together much nicer than if you press to one side.

And remember when pressing seams open, it’s much easier to press to one side first and then come back in and press open.

I’m so happy with the way my happy little blocks are coming together.

I spy a Frances Tail! =)

Love the cat tail that sneaked into the picture!

  2. What a great way to display your little charms. I have a couple large canning jars I never thought of using them that way. I love looking at my pre-cuts especially my jelly rolls. I have an old post office cir 1870 that came out of an old general store. I use the mail cubbies to display my jelly rolls and charm packs.
