Moda Blockheads Round 5 (Group 2): Block 14 [SUBSTITUTE BLOCK]
For this week, I swapped out the block designed by Brigitte of Zen Chic for a different star block. I decided that I didn’t want to take the time to paper piece a block, instead opting for a traditionally pieced block. Would you like to do the same?…keep reading. =)
The block that Brigitte designed is a very pretty block. You can find the PDF download for it here.
As I said, I decided to make a traditionally pieced block rather than paper piecing. Paper piecing always takes me longer than traditional piecing! I don’t know if I am just slow at it or if it just takes longer. My guess, from having done quite a bit of paper piecing, is that it just takes longer. =)
I found this pretty Ohio Star variation on the Quilting on Main Street Blog. You can see the tutorial here. In the block tutorial, the block finishes at 9″. I made a couple changes to bring the block to 12″ finished so it fits in with all of my other 12″ blocks.
For the four outside corner squares, I cut those at 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″. The original tutorial has you either making chain blocks or corner squares at 3 1/2″ square. Additionally the hourglass blocks, in the original tutorial, are trimmed to 3 1/2″ x 4 1/2″. I trimmed them just as the tutorial said to but then, I sewed 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles to the outer side of each to bring the unit back up to 4 1/2″ square. By making those two changes to the original tutorial, the block will come out to 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″.
I think it’s such a pretty block! And it was fun to make. My block is mostly Peachy Keen fabric (the white is from Blueberry Delight).
Thanks so much for stopping by! Have fun making your block this week whichever you opt to make. =)
I love paper piecing, but I love the substitute block you chose, Corey! It will be such a lovely addition to the quilt!
It’s a nice one to tuck in your back pocket even if you don’t need it for this week. =) It’s so pretty, isn’t it!
Thank you for this. I actually don’t like paper piecing so this is perfect!
I think it’s such a pretty block!
Where can I find the substitute block to actually download the pattern
If you click where it says “you can see the tutorial here” in red lettering under the second picture it will take you to the blog post where I found the instructions. It is a written tutorial. The instructions are for a 9″ block, as I said, so you will need to make the changes I noted to increase the block to the 12″ size.
I love your block! (I am a sucker for Ohio star variations.)
(Paper pieced blocks give me nightmares. 😫)
I thought it was such a pretty block!
Is there an instruction sheet for your replacement block ?

iI don’t like paper piecing either. I love to take a block and play with it sometimes and make it my own depending on my project also.. Helps keep those creative juices flowing. Love your “revised” block.
There are always so many options in quilting!
Love your variation! Thank you for sharing. Your recent bunny and carrot blocks are just adorable too!
I’m not participating in the this sew along, but I love paper piecing. I really, really do! I would probably not substitute another block for this one, but I really like the one you posted. I am keeping it just in case I want to use it sometime to substitute it somewhere. I don’t like to make flying geese blocks so maybe it could be used for one of those sometime. Your alternate block is amazing and I will have to try it soon. Thanks for sharing!
I love the sub block and would love to make it but I can’t seem to find the pattern! Please tell this old lady where I cann find it.
Click underneath the second photo where it says in red lettering “You can see the tutorial here”. Make sure to also read the information for re-sizing the block found underneath the second photo as well.
Love the substitute block you picked. I feel the same about paper piecing – it always seems to take me longer – don’t know why, lol.
