Moda Blockheads Round 5: Super Scrappy Star Block

It’s my turn to share my block pattern for this round of Moda Blockheads.  Let me tell you friends, if you like to stop by for the antics (maybe that should be “antiggs”) of our funny cat, Tiggs, you are in for a real treat.  He really likes the quilt block this week and let it be known with vigor!

My sister, Nicole, took all of these photos for me so I hadn’t seen them (or realized Tiggs was extra silly that day) until I started to go through them to edit them for this blog post.

For those of you just wanting to stop by and grab the block pattern, you can download the Super Scrappy Star block pattern here.  If you are here for some Tiggs content and some block tips, be sure to keep reading. =)

For Tiggs and the Super Scrappy Star block pattern, it was really love at first sight:

He waddled his way over to the block pattern and couldn’t even wait for the block to be placed beside the pattern before letting us know that he was a fan.  He had to sprawl across it on his side, followed by a sprawl across it on his back for good measure:

And once the block was placed beside the pattern, he couldn’t wait to snuggle up beside his new favorite quilt block.

“I’m just going to have to take a little bit of a nap here”.

“Why are you waking me from my deep slumber???!?” (It’s important to note that even though these pictures were literally taken over the course of only a few minutes, Tiggs has somehow managed to look like he’s been awoken from a very deep sleep complete with smashed in sleeping fur on the one side of his face, and the squintiest “Hey, you woke me up!” eyes ever).

Tiggs also needed to oversee the pressing information on this block:

I opted to piece my block in horizontal rows so that I could nest my seams nicely.  Here’s what the pressing on the back looks like a little bit closer:

The other thing I opted to do was to use the 1 rectangle/2 squares method for the flying geese so that I wouldn’t have any duplicate fabrics in my block.  I hand wrote the measurements on the pattern picture below so you can see what you’d need if you wanted to use the same method:

You would use my handwritten notes for (B) & (C) for those units.

Tiggs gives this block is paw of approval!

And here are all of my blocks together so far:

As I’ve mentioned previously, but if you’re new here and missed it, I am using a mix of my Peachy Keen fabrics (which are shipping to quilt shops right now) and Anne Sutton’s, Blueberry Delight fabrics (which ship this month).

It’s been so much fun to play with these two lines of fabric together.

If you, like me, have been in a scrappy quilt block frame of mind recently, the patterns I designed for my Peachy Keen line of fabric are great scrap busters.  Jelly Roll Patchwork can be made using a Jelly Roll or scraps from your scrap bin:

You can purchase the pattern here.

Scrap Basket Stars is another great scrap buster.  Alternatively, you can use a fat eighth bundle on this one:

You can purchase the pattern here.

Hourglass Scraps would also be a great scrap busting quilt:

You can purchase the pattern here.

If you’d like to see the quilts in more detail as well as the other two quilts designed for the Peachy Keen collection of fabric, be sure to stop by the YouTube trunk show video for the Peachy Keen quilts.

Thank you so much for stopping by today!…I hope you love today’s Moda Blockheads block as much as Tiggs does. =)  Corey

Oh my goodness, I am in love with Tiggs! These pictures made me laugh out loud which is always a blessing! Love the block and the Peachy Keen quilts too!

  5. LOL “…waddled over…” he is getting a big chonky but no one is a better block model than Tiggs! What is up with the slash on the bridge of his nose?

And thank you for this super scrappy star and especially for giving us pressing instructions/illustrations! It looks so easy, what a nice break it will be to do HAHA

We never know what happens when he rolls in with a scratch of some sort. My guess is maybe briars as he also has a tendency to come back with some extra burrs here and there.

      • I don’t know how you manage an indoor/outdoor cat! I’ve only ever had indoor-only cats who’d probably die if they got out for more than 5 minutes LOL He’s a guy, too, so there’s also that mystery to where he gets injuries HAHA

That would be how Frances is…she wouldn’t be good outside at all! She showed up at our house just a few weeks old and has been inside since. Tiggs on the other hand showed up as an adult (or nearly) and he is very used to being outside and taking care of himself. If we don’t let him outside he is not a happy cat. I compare him to a little boy who needs his recess…he starts picking on Frances, opening our cupboard doors, and generally making a nuisance of himself. Send him outside for a few hours and he comes back in a new, happier cat. 😂

What a great way to start the day, pictures of beautiful blocks, and a sweet, sweet kitty.  Ironically, I’ve always had Golden Retrievers, but this little golden kitty has stolen my heart 💜❤️💗

Well, it certainly is obvious that Tiggs believes he outshines even the loveliest of stars. Much as I do enjoy his antics, I am really posting to say again how much I like your blocks combining your newest collection with another. They are coming together so beautifully. Thank you for sharing.

Always love your blocks, Corey! And who wouldn’t love precious Tiggs. I have dogs as I’m allergic to cats, but I surely do enjoy watching cats being quirky and fun! I bet he gets into some real adventures! Thank you for sharing your block and Tiggs with all of us. Made my morning a happy one.

    Hi Cory
When I first saw this Block I thought A & C only for Star were same fabrics. Until I printed things off and saw the differences. Clever. “Gotta Love Tigs Fan Club” we should start one. I’m trying to patiently wait for my Half Yard Bundles of “Peachy Keen” I’m thinking of using a few of the line with “Sunwashed”?
What do you think Corey of mixing “Sunwashed” and “Peachy Keen”. Let me know, I have to see the fabrics up close on “Peachy Keen” before making my decision.  Great Block! I purchased Corey’s bundle of different patterns for “Peachy Keen” so I Love “Scrap Basket Stars” and “Hourglass Scraps” but I need to make each one bigger. Everyone have Fun.

  22. Marcy Henri says:

I don’t have the time to sew along with BH but am LOVING all of the star blocks so I am saving the patterns for the future. I was hoping for a scrappy star pattern from you in the bonus blocks you’ve been sharing in the Scrappy Irish Chain SAL and this is perfect to add to that fun group!
And, although I am not a cat person, Tiggs is adorable in this post.
Thank you for a fun block & cheerful (as always) post!

  23. Anna Kerr says:

Thats a beautiful block, Corey. By the way I also love your new Christmas line.

  24. Kathryn Bruton says:

Tiggs really is a hoot, love the photo shoot!

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
