Moda Blockheads Round 5 (Group 2): Block 18
Our block this week is brought to us courtesy of Tiggs. As soon as I started laying out my little 6″ blocks, he was very interested in checking things out.
He started to get very comfortable LOL. =) You can just see the block I made for this week tucked under his shoulder. As I said…very comfortable. Before I share the block I made this week (I opted to make a substitute block), I first want to share the pattern for the actual block. It’s brought to us by Rashida Coleman Hale and it’s an applique block.
You can download the pattern here.
As I’ve mentioned previously, I’m opting not to take the time to make any of the applique blocks or the paper pieced blocks this round. Instead, I am substituting other traditionally pieced blocks for those weeks we have other techniques used.
This week, I decided to make a Sawtooth star block with a plus center. My block is a 6″ block using a mix of Peachy Keen and Blueberry Delight fabrics. Someone asked me the last time I used this print as my background fabric how I got everything going the same direction. That is one of the advantages to using the 4 at a time flying geese method…it automatically allows for the background print to go the same direction.
While I didn’t have time to sit down and right up a complete pattern for this block, I did take the time to list the pieces needed in both the 6″ and 12″ block sizes if you want to make a Plus Star block of your own.
Download the Plus Star patches size info here.
Note: The measurements listed for the 4 at a time Flying Geese are exact measurements…not over-sized.
One other question I’ve received recently…”How many blocks does your layout require for this round?” And the answer to this is (20) of the 6″ blocks and (16) of the 12″ blocks. This means that I have more 6″ blocks that I need to make yet…I think I have just a couple more of the 12″ needed. I’ll be sharing more details about my layout soon. I did share my plan for my layout in this video (but haven’t yet shared yardage info or which Barn Star I am going to be using for my center). I will give you a hint on the Barn Star….#7 is the one I am using. =)
Also just a quick reminder for those of you that may not visit the blog for the weekly Saturday video, Deerly Loved is the May pattern of the month.
You can purchase this pattern for $5 (full price = $14.95) in my Etsy shop this month. The fabrics used in my quilt are Starberry which comes out in a few weeks.
Thanks so much for stopping by! Have fun making your block this week! Corey
Tiggs is your Quality Control Supervisor! He approves! Such a cute and happy companion!
He’s such a funny cat!
Cute block!! And I saw some WONDERFUL new low volume fabric goodness on the Moda website! I feel like they were designed specifically for me. My stash is seriously lacking in that area & I’ve been commenting a lot recently how they aren’t normally on my radar when I’m shopping & suddenly there they were! PERFECTION!
Yay!..There are some really pretty fabrics lines that are getting shown to quilt shops right now!
Thank you for the great idea for an alternate block. I’m not much of an applique quilter, and your blocks are always so fun to make.
You’re so welcome!
I rarely use applique blocks on a quilt made for cuddling but reserve them for decor pieces, so your alternative block is a lovely gift. Like Tiggs, I am an admirer of your colorful blocks.
I’m glad you can put that block to good use. =)
Seeing Tiggs makes my day! He is such a handsome fellow and sets off your lovely blocks so well. 🙂
Thanks so much!
Tiggs is just the coolest kitty just love when he photo bombs the workđź’•. The blocks are beautiful.
He’s so funny when he comes rolling over!
I always appreciate your alternate blocks. What were the other blocks that you did a alternate?
For all of the paper pieced blocks that have been shared so far.
I came for the pattern(s).
I stayed for sweet Tiggs. ;D
LOL!…love this. =)
