Moda Blockheads Round 5: Breaking the “rules” for Block 3 =)

For this week, I did not follow the Blockheads Round 5 block plan and instead went in a completely different direction with a completely different block.  Let me tell you why!

The block pattern that is released today is by Brigitte of Zen Chic.  It is a beautiful paper pieced block.  All of the Moda Blockheads Round 5 PDF patterns can be found in the round 5 archive when they release.  Now, you can see that my block is definitely not a paper pieced block!

I just got back from a much needed vacation which means the amount of time that I had to make blocks was a shorter than usual. =)  Paper pieced blocks take me longer to make than traditionally pieced blocks so I opted for a substitute block.  In keeping with the star theme of this round of Moda Blockheads, I searched the Blockheads archives for a star block that I knew I could make quickly.  Sunshine Star by Sherri McConnell from the 3rd round of Blockheads was a perfect choice for me.

If you too find yourself in need of a substitute block at any point in MBH, we have 4 rounds previous to this one that we can reference if we want to.  Round 3 is a particularly nice one to look through because those blocks are available in both 6″ and 12″ (among other sizes) which makes them fit right in with the blocks for this round.  You can reference the round 3 archives here.  The Sunshine Star block pattern can be found all the way at the bottom of that archive, the 2nd block from the bottom.

It’s always nice to know that we have options in this sew along.  We can make our blocks exactly as we’d like!  This is what all of my blocks look like so far.

Today’s block is a softer block without the darkest blue in it.  I know that, going forward, I’ll need to make sure to incorporate more of those softer blocks to keep everything feeling balanced.  It’s a great idea to lay out all of your blocks together periodically to see if you notice things like that.  It’s much easier to keep things balanced as you go than to notice something when you’ve nearly completed your blocks.

I hope you have a wonderful time sewing up your block! Corey

Corey, I love all of your blocks and especially how you combined the two fabric lines: Blueberry Delight and Peachy Keen. I love the blues and corals! Good advice too look at the blocks all together to see if they need balancing. I love paper piecing so will go with Brigitte’s block this week.

Did you use your new fabric line coming out in October

    • Corey says:

Yes, for this round of Moda Blockheads, I am using a mix of Peachy Keen (my line coming out in October) mixed with Blueberry Delight (Anne Sutton’s line also coming out in October).

LOL!…I knew there would be others looking for a non-paper pieced block they could use. Sometimes you want to paper piece and other times you just don’t! =)

You are the best!! I love this one too—may need to do all three now!!! LOLOL

Peachy Keen is just so pretty!

You’re such a rebel! 😉 I love the block you chose, it’s beautiful. I haven’t been brave enough to try paper piecing yet. Hope you had a refreshing vacation!

Our vacation was nice!…although Ohio feels really cold now in comparison! =) You should try paper piecing and see what you think. Once you get around it feeling a little bit backwards, it’s a really nice technique to be able to add to your quilt making. =)

Thank you for giving us the archived Blockheads for Round 3. I wasn’t able to find Round 4 on the site. Do you have a link? Thanks for your help. Debby

Thank you Corey I am not a paper piecing fan so great to have an alternative

Thanks for giving us “permission” to break the rules. 🙂 I just don’t enjoy paper piecing, so I’ll probably be finding a different block, too. I especially like the one you chose.

  15. Janny says:

I love the freedom to color outside the norm. Thank you for reminding us that its ok to rest the rules 🙂

  16. Sandy Cole says:

Your decision to use another pattern is so encouraging to your community of followers. Sometimes quilters walk away from starting or finishing a quilt simply because a block or part of the quilt is either too hard or not liked. As you just demonstrated, we don’t have to get stuck or frustrated, just choose another pattern and keep going! Thanks, Corey!

    • Corey says:

I always think that quilt making should be enjoyable…If I know that I am not going to enjoy some aspect of it, I am pretty quick to change things up so it’s always fun. =) Or like this week, even though I don’t mind paper piecing, I knew that I wasn’t going to enjoy it because of my time crunch.

  17. Ann Miller says:

I like the substitute block you chose and I am going to use it. I despise, loathe and detest paper piecing!!!! Thanks for posting this.

This is so helpful, Corey, thank you! I have limited time to sew my blocks, and wondered what I could do. Now I have options!

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
