Moda Blockheads Round 5: Southern Star Block
Our block for this week is Southern Star, brought to us by Jenelle Kent. This block is entirely made of stitch/flip corners and it goes together so quickly!
One quick comment before I share about my block…I’m using Peachy Keen and Blueberry Delight fabrics for my blocks. I’ve mentioned that Peachy Keen started shipping at the end of September but now I’ve also seen Blueberry Delight showing up in quilt shops. I just wanted to let you know! Now onto my block info…
I knew that I wanted another block to compliment the softer block I had made a couple weeks ago. The darker blues I am using really add a lot of contrast and I think it’s nice to have some of these quieter blocks mixed in.
I’ve mentioned before about the importance of laying out all of your blocks periodically so you can check the color balance. I knew that I needed to keep an eye on these softer blocks and make sure they get balanced out. But in looking at this photo, you can also see that I’ll need to incorporate some blocks that have more of the corals and dark blues (like the 3rd block in the top row above).
I decide on my fabrics from week to week so this is an easy way for me to make sure things are balancing out nicely as I choose fabrics each week.
You can find the Southern Star block pattern here.
Thank you so much for stopping by and have a wonderful week! Corey
Wow, I love this block! It’s beautiful in these softer prints… I can imagine an entire quilt of this block in all the Peachy Keen prints!
Corey, thank you for your weekly block posts. I haven’t started the blocks yet. I was waiting to order Peachy Keen and Blueberry delight. Do you think a layer cake of each would be enough to work with?
This block looks pretty easy and quick to do. Thank you for sharing in your gorgeous fabrics!
Your posts gently teach and inspire!
Corey, Thank you so much for reminding us to periodically check for color balance. I have soooo much going on in real life this week, I might not get to my Southern Star until there is peace in the Middle East (sadly not a joke for me this time; my older brother lives in Ashkelon and yes by God’s grace he is still alive and well)
Since I’ve been trying to integrate two lines (Evermore new from Sweetfire Road and Folktale from Lella Boutique a couple of years ago) I really need to watch both color and balance of the collections or I’ll end up with a bunch of one leftover again. I think I went 100% Folktale last week! eep!
BTW I miss seeing Tiggsy playing with your photo displays. Yeah, I need to get another cat of my own again.

Oh and Fat Quarter Shop emailed me that they shipped my half-yard bundle of Peachy Keen (yiiippppeeeeee) I also ordered a backer set (4 yds) of the pretty blue flower print so whatever I make can have a pretty backer too! Can’t wait 🙂
