Oh, Happy Day! Sampler Sew Along Week 1

Welcome to Week #1 of the Oh, Happy Day! Sampler Sew Along.  Since wrapping up the Beautiful Day sew along, I’ve been eagerly waiting for the start of this one.  The weather is cooperating for me too…we’ve had some wonderful fall temperatures move in over the last few days and it feels like sewing weather!

First of all, if you’ve missed the previous blog posts about this sew along, it’s not too late to join in.  You can find the information I’ve shared so far in this blog post.

When I was writing and planning the projects in Oh, Happy Day! I knew that I wanted to host a sampler sew along after the book came out.  I wanted it to be simple to host and simple to follow along with.  For that reason, when I designed each pillow project, I made sure to set up the instructions so you could easily see what you would need to cut to make one 12″ finished block (12 1/2″ unfinished).

The block we are kicking off with is the Generations of Love block.  Grab your Oh, Happy Day! book and turn to page 32.  Listed under “Materials” cut the 18 rectangles in the size listed.  Easy, peasy…those are the only fabrics you will need for this week’s block.

Here are the fabrics that I used (from my Buttercup & Slate line of fabric), as well as my fabric placement.  The rectangles are sewn together into pairs and then the pairs into rows.  After that, the rows are sewn together.  The block will measure 12 1/2″ square.  All of the 9 blocks that we are making from the book will be 12 1/2″ square.

I’ve also put together a quick piecing tutorial over on my YouTube channel.  You can watch it here.

I wanted to start with a nice simple block to kick things off as well as one that doesn’t include any background fabric.  That way if you haven’t yet picked up your background you can still start sewing right away.

As I mentioned in my video, the fun of a sampler sew along based on blocks from a book is that it allows you to try out the different blocks.  You can decide which ones you enjoy making and think about which quilts and/or pillows you might like to make.  We will be making 9 of the blocks from the book followed by 3 weeks of finishing instructions.  You’ll find a schedule for the sew along below if you’d like to mark your calendars.  I’m also including the page that the cutting instructions are listed on each week as well as the page for the written piecing instructions.

I received a few questions about how to receive notifications when the blocks are released.  There are a couple ways you can do that.  If you’d like to subscribe to the blog posts,  you can be notified via email when a new post comes out.  On your computer, on the top left of the blog you’d just enter your email into the “subscribe to blog via email” box.  If you have a tablet/phone you’ll find the spot to enter your email when you rotate your phone horizontally  and then click the little orange arrows on the top left side.

You can also follow along over on YouTube as I’ll be releasing weekly videos there as well.  If you subscribe to my channel, right after you hit the red subscribe button, a little bell pops up beside that button.  If you hit the bell, it will notify you when new videos are up.

And lastly, we love seeing each others blocks as we make them!  If you’d like to share pictures of your blocks, come join the Coriander Quilts Facebook group.  It’s a private group where we share projects made with my fabrics or made with my patterns…or both! =)  You can request to join here…make sure to answer all of the questions to get your request approved.

Have fun sewing your Generations of Love block! Corey

Thank you for using a block with no background. I had to order mine and it is on the way. Please have a link with printable information as you have before. I know this will be fun and look forward to it!

    • Corey says:

I thought there might be others waiting on background so I planned it that way. =) For this quilt along, the instructions are already written in the book, Oh, Happy Day!…so we don’t need additional instructions for the blocks. If you need extra help with the piecing, I am providing weekly YouTube videos. There will be PDFs for the finishing instructions as that is a new layout not in the book. =)

  2. Suzette Cox says:

Can these be put together for a quilt instead of pillows?

    • Corey says:

Yes, you can make a quilt…it’s constructed in long rows–you can see on page 29 of the Oh, Happy Day! book how you would put together the rectangles if you wanted to make a quilt.

  3. Jane says:

Still waiting for fabric to arrive so I am already behind !!!!

  4. Lisa G :-) says:

So excited to start my first quilt-along!! Unfortunately, a dear family friend passed away last night so I am leaving for Ohio in the morning. I will be playing catch-up when I get home!

  5. Peggy Giese says:

I’ve been “drooling” over the fabric, and studying each quilt! Thanks for this🤩. Cannot wait to begin!!

  6. JENI HANSEN says:

COREY, YOU ARE SIMPLY THE BEST. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO. XOXO, JENI

I really want to participate in this sew along, but I’m not planning to use buttercup and slate fabric. Knowing how many fabrics are in that fat 8th bundle, can you give some guidance on how to select fabrics that will work? I really want to work from my stash but need some help in selecting that many fabrics to coordinate. I’m a novice in this area. Or should I just go for it and make it totally scrappy? Any suggestions you have would be so appreciated. I do have the Oh Happy Day book and am anxious to get started!

  8. Patty Jones says:

I haven’t received my fat quarter bundle of Buttercup & Slate that I pre-ordered yet, but I think I will just try using some of the Spring Brook fabric I have left. I can always start over and switch to Buttercup & Slate when it arrives. Can’t wait to get started on this, even though I still haven’t finished my Beautiful Day mystery quilt………I have several projects that are so close to being finished before being sidetracked by life. Maybe starting one more sewalong will get me jumpstarted back into finishing! LOL!! A good thought anyway!

  9. Dani says:

Still waiting on my fabric but luckily had a charm pack of Buttercup and Slate that arrived early so was able to make this block. I had to make a few changes due to only 1 charm of certain fabrics but that just makes it my own. Thanks for this sew along Corey.

  10. Jean Feeley says:

I am using your fabric from a kit and they appear to be fat eighths, but was just wondering if you could give an idea of how to cut the fabric for each block to make the best use of the fabric, so I don’t run short. I assume the fabric will be used more than once for future blocks in the book—thanks. Great video and piecing instructions.

    • Corey says:

I would suggest cutting just the pieces you need from your fat eighth each week. For this week, that would mean cutting just the rectangles (as opposed to cutting a longer strip and then subcutting the strip). Does that make sense? This will give you more flexibility in the upcoming weeks than if you had cut a longer strip from the F8.

  11. Mandee Richmond says:

I’m new to quilt alongs. I have been following Block Heads 4 and loving it!
I did not know until late that I needed your book for this sew along. I went to your Etsy shop and your signed books have sold out. Just wondering will you have any more signed books available?

  12. Book is sold out. Any more coming?

    • Corey says:

Yes!…I’ll have more in my shop within a week. You can also purchase online from other quilt shops…just google “oh, happy day Corey Yoder” and lots of spots to purchase from will pop up. It’s also on Amazon if you’re in a pinch but it’s best to support our quilt shops if we can!

  13. Delores Rast says:

Thank you Corey for posting the Moda block head – blocks. Thank you for the sew along.

  14. Judith Marketos says:

I would like to use your fabric Beautiful Day for this sew along. Do you think a fat eighth bundle would work?

  15. Patti Williamson says:

Im in, got my fabric for my birthday on monday and getting organized now.

  16. Colleen Blankenship says:

Looking forward to this sew along. I am waiting for my buttercup and slate to arrive this week. Thank you so much 💓. Sorry, but I don’t know how to do the picture thing or I would post it. This g-ma is not savvy computer. Thank you again! My sewing has improved since I did my first sew along ❤

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
