Pepper & Flax Fabrics & Patterns

Happy Wednesday everyone!  Today, I thought I would take a little bit of time and talk about my newest line of fabric Pepper & Flax.

This line comes out in April and features yellows, greys and a little bit of green.  I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I have been thoughtful about adding in yellow and grey fabrics in each of my lines so they could be used without all of the other colors if liked.  In fact, here’s a little bundle I put together several weeks ago composed of fabrics from my previous lines of fabric:

Mix of Prairie, Sundrops, Lulu Lane, Flower Mill

So, when it came time to work on a new line of fabric, I decided that I wanted to pull just the greys and yellows and that little bit of green for this line.  Pepper and Flax uses those same warm shades of colors and mixes beautifully with my previous lines of fabric.

Along with new fabric comes new patterns.  For this line, I designed 5 new patterns.  Up first, 9th & Vine.

9th & Vine uses 20 fat eighths (9″ x 22″) and finishes at 77″ x 92″.  I love this mix of nine patch blocks.  Dorie Hruska of Forever Quilting did the beautiful quilting on this for me.  Let me tell you, it got lots of “ohs” & “ahs” at quilt market.

And look at this pretty fellow who wondered over to visit me as I was taking pictures.  He’s almost the “where’s waldo” of these photos as he can sometimes be seen here and there.

The next quilt I am sharing is Dappled.  I designed this quilt specifically to be hand quilted.  So I wanted something that had great negative space that would lend itself well to straight line quilting.  And lo and behold this quilt was born:

I used one of the low volume prints as the background fabric and my mom hand quilted this one for me using the dark grey 12 wt. thread from my Aurifil thread box.  I love that she hand quilts my large quilts for me.  She is so speedy and precise!  The grey thread color is #5013.  Also, Pepper & Flax has a great scalloped stripe fabric to use for binding.  That’s another thing I like to include in my lines–a great stripe to use for all of the bindings.

Dappled uses 12 different straight cut 1/8 yard pieces of fabric.  I like offering straight cuts of fabric for some of my patterns rather than precuts all the time.  This allows you to walk into your fabric shop and choose your favorites for a quilt.  Dappled finishes at 66″ square.  And that fun scalloped edge!

Lemongrass is the next quilt I am sharing today.

Lemongrass is a jelly roll quilt and requires (36) 2 1/2″ strips.  It finishes at 69″ x 83″.  Kaylene Parry of @quilterlove66 on Instagram quilted this one for me.  She always does such a nice job when I am looking for an all over quilting design.

One of my favorite pieces from this line is the white floral I used on the backing of this quilt.  I love that it looks like a sunny, vintage sheet.  I keep thinking I need to make new sheets for my bed using this fabric!  And you can also see the striped binding in the dark grey.

I added in a touch more green to this quilt with the green border.

The last larger quilt I designed is Garden District which is another fat eighth quilt.  It uses 24 of them (9″ x 22″).  I must have had fat eighths in my mind as I was designing these!  Actually, when I design quilt patterns, I start with the quilt pattern first and then decide what precut makes the most sense to use–or straight yardage if none of the precuts work quite right.  Can you spot my little friend hiding in this picture?

He was such an ornery fellow.

Kaylene also quilted this one for me.  And I used a different low volume print for the background.  This line has some great background prints.

Garden District finishes at 72″ x 78″

The last quilt I am sharing is Barn Star which is a 40″ square wallhanging.

Barn Star uses yardage and was also quilted by Kaylene.

So, there it is–all of the new fabrics and new patterns.  The new patterns are all listed in my shop in Paper version or PDF version.  I offer a bundle price on all 5 Pepper & Flax patterns if you’d like to purchase them all.  You’ll see that bundle in my shop as well.  And, you’ll be able to purchase Pepper & Flax fabrics in quilt shops in April.

I would love to hear which is your favorite quilt!

Happy Sewing!

Love your new fabric line and the patterns too! Not sure if the horses belong to you, but they are so sweet – great pics and backgrounds!

  2. Pat H says:

9th & Vine is my favorite! I already have Pepper & Flax in mind for a throw for my friend’s retirement later this year. Have you designed any of the Color Cuts fabrics? It looks like some of those fabrics would work nicely with your lines, too!

    • Corey says:

I’m so glad you asked about Color Cuts!–Aren’t those wonderful! So, with those, Moda chose some of the new fabrics shown at Fall Market to mix and match together to make those bundles. There are Pepper & Flax fabrics included in the following Color Cuts bundles: Green, Grey, Yellow, and White. I can’t wait to play with them and I already plan to make that sampler quilt–I adore it!

      • Pat H says:

One more question then…am I correct in understanding that the fabrics in Color Cuts have already been released in Moda fabric lines and not new patterns? How do the colors coordinate so beautifully since the aqua or green you used in your lines is probably not the same shade that another designer included in her fabric line? Thanks!

        • Corey says:

You are right–the prints chosen were from a mix of lines shown at fall market. So the prints in Color Cuts are from lines that are being released this spring. They specifically chose fabrics from different lines that work well together. And while they might not be an exact color match, they are within the same color family. You’ll notice the yellows are all warm, buttery yellows–no cool tones. And the greens are more of that pistachio green sort of shade. Same goes for all of the colors–they stayed within a similar shade. You may have already read this article from Moda: http://blog.modafabrics.com/2018/01/got-color/#more-17828 but if not it’s a great one to read. And, if you want to see exactly which prints are used in each color way you can see them here: https://www.fatquartershop.com/moda-fabric/color-cuts-moda-fabrics I am super excited for these!–You know I love a scrappy quilt.

Thanks for clearing it up. I can’t wait to get my hands on Pepper & Flax and Color Cuts this spring! Hope you have a great day! Another snowy day in OH means a great day to sew! 😊

Love 9th & Vine and Dappled, and love how you turned the Barn Star block into a beautiful wall quilt.

  4. Adrienne says:

    It’s all gorgeous. Really beautiful.

  5. Pam Eckert says:

Love love the dapple quilt. How wide were the quilting lines… does your mom use a hoop or frame when she hand quilts…thank u.

  6. Susan says:

I like them all, but Barn Star is my favorite.

  7. DanyseF says:

I love the barn star but I would make it a throw with a couple of borders. I love, love, love this beautiful line of fabrics!!

  8. Lynne Tilley says:

Oh my goodness, I’m in love with your new line. It is just fabulous!

  9. Michelle says:

Absolutely beautiful… and such a SPRING feeling comes from all the quilts… Love the color combination and designs….. my 2018 goal of cutting back on the amount of fabric I purchase has quickly fallen to the sideline…. oh well… Bravo – well done!

    • Corey says:

Thanks so much!–I think it will be a wonderful Spring line. I think we have all fallen off of the “no more buying fabric” wagon. =) But, if we don’t snatch it up when we see it we might not be able to get it–I think we’ve all been there too! =)

  10. Robbin says:

My favorite color is yellow. My favorite quilt pattern would be Dappled. It is really pretty and I love the hand quilting. Thanks for the inspiration.

    • Corey says:

Yellow is one of my favorites too.–Especially a warm buttery yellow–so good! I love Dappled as well and that hand quilting just sets it off.

  11. Diane says:

Beautiful, really! I “think” I love Garden District, but then 9th and vine and all of them are lovely.:) I love your awesome prints in those beautiful colored fabrics! Thanks for the inspiration.

    • Corey says:

Thanks so much!–I settle on a favorite but then it changes the next time I look at the quilts! It’s hard to choose just one isn’t it. =)

  12. Hildy says:

I love all the patterns but don’t like yellow so much:-( I think I’ll buy some of the grey, white and green fabrics the prints look great!

    • Corey says:

Yellow is one of my favorites!–can’t ever get enough of that sunny color. =) I don’t often use a cool yellow but a warm yellow makes many appearances in my work! The greys, greens, and yellows will be very versatile in quilts. There is a wonderful tonal white fabric that features the medallion print that is beautiful as a background.

  13. Helen in Montana says:

So glad you choose to create more yellows!! It seems the least fabric color available is yellow. Your whole line looks great! And the quilts….of course awesome as always!

    • Corey says:

Yellow is one of my favorite colors to work with. I love how it warms a quilt up. Now, I am a bit picky about the exact shade of yellow as I tend to lean toward those warmer, goldenrod shades. And, thanks so much for your kind comments on the fabrics and quilts–It’s always fun sharing the designs as we get close to the fabric being available!

  14. WOW! What a gorgeous fabric line and those horses are amazing peeking in the background. Perhaps on your next line, you can stick a horse or two somewhere in the design. The quilt patterns are so nice and it’s hard to find a favorite. I especially love the large grey stitched lines that your mom put into that one quilt. You are so talented and I can’t wait for this to hit the stores!

    • Corey says:

Thanks so much!–this has been a fun line to design and then play with in quilts. Those horses are so funny aren’t they?–that one in particular was really checking out everything I was doing.

  15. Robby H. says:

This whole post was like a much needed reminded that Spring will eventually get here. The new fabrics are quite a nice grouping, but I love that green. No surprise I like Lotus, but 9th & Vine is a clever take on familiar blocks. Hope your hard work here is well received.

    • Corey says:

It will get here before we know it–although you wouldn’t be able to tell from the weather today that’s for sure! I really like what the green adds to the group as well. =)

  16. Laure T says:

I had seen Barn Star on Moda’s blog from Fall Festival, and had decided that it was my favorite. Now that I’ve looked at all of the quilts, I’m torn between Barn Star and 9th & Vine!

  17. Jackie says:

Love the fabric line!! My favourite pattern is 9th & Vine.

  18. Karen Seitz says:

Pick a favorite? I don’t think I can do it. They’re all great, and I’m so impressed that you can come out with multiple patterns that are significantly different from others on the market. Pepper and Flax will definitely be making it into my stash.

    • Corey says:

Thanks so much Karen!–I have so much fun designing quilts–that’s what I am working on this afternoon and I always enjoy it! Glad to hear that P&F made the Karen cut. =)

  19. MoeWest says:

I really like the Dappled quilt. It’s a great fabric line!

  20. Janet T says:

    Dappled for me!

  21. I love them all, but I’m going to make the barn quilt. Your fabric collections are always a favorite. Thanks for sharing.

  22. Sharon says:

Dappled is probably my favorite since it looks so old fashioned and I love the big stitch hand quilting your mom did. This is a beautiful line of fabric!

  23. Nadine W. says:

Lemon Grass and 9th and Vine are tops for me but I really like all of the patterns! Love, love, love the new line of fabrics! The colors are exactly the way I want to go in a quilt for my bedroom! I can’t wait until I can buy some!

  24. Rochelle Summers says:

Can’t really pick a favorite pattern since they are all nice. I love the fabric line and especially like that you added gray to the palette for the contrast. Yellows have always been a favorite and these are very soft. Thanks for the look see.

    • Corey says:

Thank you so much!–I have had a warm grey in all of my fabric lines. It is such a go to color for me. Even before designing fabrics, I loved using grey in quilts both in the prints or as a background color. It adds such a great backdrop for both pastel shades and brighter colors.

  25. Jill Miles says:

Oh, I love this line of fabric! I can’t choose just one favorite pattern. I love Barn Star and Dappled and Garden District. I have had Kaylene quilt a couple of quilts for me also. She does a great job!

  26. Nancy says:

You are sure making it hard for me to stay on my fabric diet. I MUST use some of my current supply of fabric before I can buy more and I am really wanting your new line. The combination is wonderful.

    • Corey says:

Thanks so much Nancy!–I really appreciate your comments. Pepper & Flax comes out at the end of April so maybe you’ll have a chance to use some of your current stash before then. 😉

  27. gwen says:

9th and vine is my favorite… I was cutting it out at retreat and had several women run up to the store and purchase the pattern… Really a favorite.

  28. Janice Hall says:

Corey – I just finished piecing my first quilt with your fabric line Lulu Lane (which i had picked up some charm packs). I got on the internet to search for backing and found your site. I am in love/lust/hankerin for all of your fabric lines. You may have just become my favorite designer. Your fabrics are soft and beautiful and inspire happiness. Can’t wait to purchase them all. Keep blessing us with your wonderful talent.

    Janice

    • Corey says:

Thank you so much Janice!–I love designing fabrics and quilts and I am so glad that you have been enjoying them too. I really enjoy working with a happy color palette–it brings me joy! =)

  29. Kathy Ensminger says:

You always have beautiful fabric and wonderfully designed patterns! Your lines go well with many fabrics. I would love to peek at the backing in each of these! Does your long arm quilter quilt for the public? Her work is spectacular!

    • Corey says:

Thank you so much for your wonderful comments! Most of the ladies that quilt for me do offer quilting services to anyone interested. My Pepper & Flax quilts were machine quilted by Kaylene Parry and Dorrie Hruska both of which have long arm businesses. The quilt that is hand quilted was done by my mom and unfortunately, she doesn’t offer her hand quilting services. =)

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
