Q&A Friday (Moda Block Heads Lay Out Information)
Welcome to Q&A Friday!
I’ve been getting asked pretty frequently as of late if I have completed the fabric requirements and directions for my layout for Moda Block Heads. Today I am sharing that information with you. If you are not participating in Moda Block Heads, be sure to leave me your quilty questions in the comments below. I will be back next Friday answering all of your fun questions. =)
For my layout, I am making an additional 50 blocks that will be alternated with the Block Heads blocks being released every week. My lay out will use a total of 49 sampler blocks of the 56 being released. This allows me to pick and choose my favorites, or save some to piece into my quilt back.
I am also giving instructions for the 8″ version. Due to the 8″ size, the block for this version has slightly different proportions (the corner squares are smaller in comparison to the rest of the block) see the lay out below:
Here are the individual block requirements, cutting for the whole quilt, and yardage requirements for the 6″ block version:
And, here is the same information for the 8″ block size:
The solids that I am using for my quilt are Moda Bella Solids in Off-White (9900-200) and Moda Bella Solids in Etchings Slate (9900-170). I hope that you are fortunate enough to be able to purchase your solids in your local quilt shop. If not, Bella Solids, are the basic of the month at Fat Quarter Shop and are 20% off through the end of this month (tomorrow 2/29/20).
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend! Corey
Love your layout design. Thank you also for explaining the ‘Print Friendly pathway’ – super helpful :)! Your blocks look so pretty with your lovely fabrics. Love seeing your process.
Thank you, Corey for this layout option. It helps me in evaluating how I approach this quilt design. As always, I find your explanations easy to understand and implement.
Thank you Corey for the layout design. I am doing the 8″ blocks and the layout you have provided will be perfect. I love all your tips that you provide. Happy Quilting🧵
Thank you for the layout information. I am trying the 12″ blocks and beginner. Will you be doing a breakdown for 12″ blocks? I love your explanations that are not intimidating me to keep trying!
You are welcome! I won’t be—the 12” blocks in this lay out result in a quilt larger than a king.
Wow! I never knew to even look for the green button. Thank you so much. I have been waiting for your layout. It is so crisp and allows for movement of blocks to get their true uniqueness. Thank you for sharing.
So happy to see this post! I love your layout. Gives me something to noodle on for awhile.
No questions yet, but give me time…I’m sure I’ll ask some bonehead thing & then figure it out even before you have a chance to answer!
Love the layout and am so appreciative for the Print Friendly tip! Who knew??!!??!!
Thanks for the layout – very nice! And I love that green button and the options – very helpful!!!
Where are the alternate blocks head blocks found? Thanks!
Which alternate were you looking for?
Perhaps I missed it, but is there a yardage amount for the 8″ layout? I thank you for this! I’m referring to the Moda Solids yardage.
The yardages are in the last column.
These are the alternate blocks, right? (I had the same question…) They just don’t look like them…perhaps until you get them with the other blocks?
I haven’t made any of the alternate blocks. In my layout above the blocks I have pictured in my lay out are the standard blocks that have released every week. Does that answer your question?
I can’t wait to use this layout! I’m always a sucker for a chain pattern and I know it’s gonna be amazing with the sampling of all the various blocks. Thanks for putting this together for us!
I really like this layout… but I am thinking of using it for some orphan blocks that I have… would just doubling the measurements for the 6 inch work for a 12? or is the math subtract half an inch, double and re-add the half inch?
