Sewcialites Round 2, Block 3

Welcome to week 3 of the Sewcialites Round 2 sew along.  This week, our block is brought to us by Jackie McDonald.

You can find the pattern download for Jackie’s block here.

I am such a fan of Jackie’s fabric lines.  She’s a new Moda designer and I’ve been enjoying her lines.  If you’re not familiar with Jackie or her company, Sweetfire Road, you will want to take a peek at her fabric lines.  You can see her fabric lines here.  Click “swatch page” for any of the lines to see the fabrics.

I enjoyed piecing Jackie’s block.  I’m noticing that the blocks in this round of Sewcialites are fussier than Round 1 especially in this small size.  I hadn’t really looked ahead at the patterns and maybe I should have! =)

I did simplify this block a little bit.  I opted for a fussy cut center in place of the patchwork piece at the bottom right of the page above.  If you cut a square in the size listed in that step, you can opt for a one piece center.  For my 3″ block, the center square was cut at 2″ square.  The Seed Catalog print from Spring Brook has a variety of fun little motifs that can be fussy cut.

I also opted to use strip piecing in place of cutting & sewing individual squares in the first step.  I cut 2 strips, each 7/8″ x 9″, in place of the (8) C squares and the (8) D) squares.  You will need 1 strip for C and one for D.  This saved time on the cutting/sewing.

I’ll be back tomorrow with another block for our Oh, Happy Day! Sampler Sew Along.  Happy Sewing! Corey

I had thoughts of trying this round of sewialites, but am glad I didn’t! It is out of my realm! I do enjoy seeing your blocks though! Looking forward to tomorrow’s “Oh, Happy Day” block!

Thank you so much for sharing your journey with the 3″ blocks. Your tips and tricks, as well as your mishaps, are so encouraging to me as I join you on the 3″ road.😊

Corey, I loved your fussy cut center block, it so perfect. I’ve noticed, as well, that this round of Sewcialites has more complex blocks. I planned to try the 3” blocks. I still want to try them, but I may substitute some of the 3” from the first Sewcialites. I’ll just see how it goes. Can’t wait for tomorrow’s block. I just love your QAL’s.

  4. So so beautiful! Great job! I love seeing your versions of the patterns!

I had initially planned to join the Socialites 2 Quilt Along but when I checked out those blocks I decided that even the 9” blocks were going to cause me problems. Then after I watched Kimberly at Fat Quarter Shop do the first one, and then the second one, I was pretty sure I needed to sit this one out. Maybe as we go along I will make some and opt to make a smaller quilt or fill in with something easy in place of the more complicated blocks. You are brave to be making those 3” blocks for sure. And yours is so beautiful. Love the fussy cut center. What a genius idea! I always learn something new from your posts! Thanks for sharing from your experience and wisdom! I too have discovered Jackie and her fabrics! I snagged a jelly roll of Wild Meadow and matched it up with some eggplant Moda solid and plan to make a similar version to Pat Sloan’s quilt that she made for the jelly roll sew along. Those purples are just too yummy! Thanks Corey for sharing with us. I can’t wait to see what you have for us tomorrow for the Oh, Happy Day sew along. Such fun!
