Something a little bit different

Candy Striped Quilt

Good afternoon and welcome to June.  I can’t believe we are already in June.  I am so thankful for a heavenly father to lean on because as we start a new month, I am not sure what each day will bring.  I suppose that is no different than starting any other month but I’ve been leaning much harder this year for sure!

I shared over on Instagram that during the month of May I was participating in a challenge called 5K every day in the month of May.  Each day in May, I walked or ran or did a combo of both to complete a 5K (3.1 miles).  Early in the month, I had decided that I was probably going to continue on in doing some form of this after May.  Last year, I did the challenge but promptly quit once the challenge was over and didn’t start back up again until May rolled around again this year.

I asked, on Instagram, if anyone else would be interested in a 30 day challenge of some sort once June rolled around.  Just about everybody was interested.  So, here’s the deal.  This is going to be low key–but sometimes it’s nice (and encouraging) to know that others are working right along beside you.

You can choose your own challenge.  It just needs to be something that you want to do for 30 days in a row.  I signed up for a Run Across Ohio event.  Since I was already doing just over 3 miles each day in May, adding an extra mile in June didn’t seem like too much of a stretch.  But you can do whatever you’d like; drink more water, get outside, read more, spend time sewing, get your devotions in each day….the sky is the limit.  It doesn’t need to be a hard challenge (unless you want it to be).  If anyone wants to join in on the Run Across Ohio event, you can read more about it here.  But, for reals, if your challenge is to “eat a piece of pie” each day…you go for it. =)

I put together a little calendar you can print out to check off your days if you’d like:

You can download the calendar here.

And if you don’t want to participate, that is great too.  Like I said, this is a low key, choose your own adventure, sort of challenge. =)  If you want to share on Instagram how you are doing, you can use the hashtag #coriander30days . I’ll try to share how things are going on my end here and there throughout the month as well.

The other thing I wanted to share with you was the June $5 pattern of the month.

I opted to go with Candy Striped for this month because I can’t get the idea of a Red/White/Blue quilt out of my head.

So, I went ahead and mocked it up using a couple new collections that either have just come out or are on their way very soon.  First up, in Tres Jolie Laws by French General.  I love the prints in this collection.  And the fact that they are lawns means this will be a very lightweight cozy quilt.  This collection should be shipping to your local quilt shops very soon.

I also did a mock-up in Fig Tree’s Catalina line.  These fabrics just shipped to quilt shops and I think they’d be so pretty in this quilt.

Sweetwater has a brand new line coming out towards the end of this month called Branded.  This is another line that works so well for a red/white/blue quilt.

And the last collection I tried out was, At Home, by Bonnie & Camille.

Candy Striped is such a quick to piece pattern that it would be an easy summer quilt to whip up.  If you’d like to purchase the pattern, it is $5 for June only and it’s available as a PDF or Paper pattern.  You can find both versions in my shop.

I would love to find time to make one of these but we’ll see what the summer holds. =)  I hope you all have a wonderful Monday.  And if you decide to participate in my June challenge, I’d love to hear what you are challenging yourself with in the comments!

Be back soon, Corey

Corey, thanks for the inspiration. Leaning on Him is the absolute best to get us through these times and valleys. I committed to sewing a minimum of 15 minutes (it’s a trick) each day and now I am going to use your calendar to do the 30 minutes of walking each day. I can probably work up to more minutes. However 30 minutes in the north GA mountains can be a little challenging. Can’t wait to start the Christmas BOM

Those both sound like great ways to spend your June days. Isn’t it funny how just 15 minutes in the sewing room is sometimes hard to come by!

Oh my goodness! Sold! I have always wanted to do a red, white & blue quilt. I was just digging in my stash on Friday & uncovered a fat quarter bundle & a few other precuts of Sweetwater’s Freedom line. This would be a perfect project.

Can this pattern basically be cut from a fat quarter bundle for the stars and strip strips

I find myself always indoors and not spending as much time outdoors as I would like. So my 30 day challenge is to read outdoors for an hour each day. Get fresh air while Enjoying books that have been gathering dust. 😂❤️
Thank you Corey, for always sending positive and happy inspirations my way. May God Bless you and your family during these difficult times. Stay safe!

This sounds like a wonderful thing to spend each day doing! That time outdoors is sure to be refreshing. May God be with you and your family also!

I feel like that pie challenge would inherently mean at least 5k per day for me. Actually, each summer I choose a place I want to virtually “walk” and figure out how many total miles I need to accumulate walking over the summer. Last year I walked from Denver to Moab.. Fortunately, I didn’t have to actually make the return trip. ;- ) Good luck with your trip across Ohio.

    • Corey says:

The pie challenge definitely sounds like a lot of fun though!! 😂 And wow! What a walking challenge!

I am going to challenge myself to spend time on devotions each morning.

I love the idea of a challenge. I just “got over” a sinus infection and did a 5.5 mountain bike ride today. I am at 6800 feet in elevation so need to ease back into exercising! Let’s do this!

I started my challenge in February. To walk 2020 miles for the year! when I stared I didn’t know all the events that would be reshaping 2020! I’m still on track to make my goal!

I have been participating in Pat Sloan’s Daily Challenges since March, and they’ve kept me motivated and productive. For June she is doing Free Motion Quilting as the focus. So I will join in your challenge that I will practice my FMQ every day. A double challenge to help me stay focused and accountable. I really like the Candy Stripe in R,W, & B , and thinking it would make a nice QOV. Adding it to my list “to make”.

    Hi Corey
Thanks for the great post. Like you, I find that I am leaning on Him a lot lately. I know He hears what it is that we hold silently in our hearts and is always there for us (even when we feel broken and at a loss), but despair can never persevere. Hope, faith and love must abound. I would love to join your challenge for June…I think mine will be to work on something handmade for 20 minutes a day (whether it be cross stitch, sewing or quilt related). Finding time to decompress is important and with the end of the school year, final assessments and report card writing upon me, taking time to do something creative will help de-stress the mind and body. Keep smiling and God Bless!

I am so excited about this challenge and have printed out my calendar. I would love to set new goals each month and have a cute calendar to go with each month! alass, I am not tech savvy in making them. 🙂
Thanks for the motivation to help all of us to make changes for the good.

I love your positive posts! Especially your faith!

  13. Love the quilt. Looks like it is easy enough to do quickly. I would love to join the challenge but I am so tired right now…just did a run to Ohio and back in two days…maybe when I am over the car lag???

Hi Corey, I love all the things you do, and I noticed a quilt at the bottom of today’s blog post. When I went to that post from 2014 there was a free pattern for Blooming Star Quilt that you designed for RJR fabrics, but when I clicked the link it gave me an error. Is that pattern still available? Thanks so much, Debby

This is the perfect time for me to do this kind of a challenge! I am moving on June 30th after living in the same house for 17 years (the longest I’ve ever lived in one place). I’m challenging myself to get rid of something each day for the next 30 days – though it probably won’t be from my sewing room😉.

God is wonderful … I was just heading upstairs .. when for no reason I decided to sit down and look at my email again. … found your conversation here … and wow … I am inspired … I printed the calendar .. and I am going to use my treadmill every day … I will try 30 mins a day, try !!! … but I will at least use it every day. .. and it is almost 5:00 pm here in Calif … so I better get to it. …

And I have been in such a funk … no interest in sewing these days … (I have made way too many masks)
but this quilt looks so cute and easy … I will be buying the Candy Striped pattern … (thank you for the great price) …

Have a blessed day, Kim M.

My PayPal address is bethquilts13@gmail.com, my actual email is bethquilt13@ gmail.com, with NO S. Is there any way you could resend the PDF? Thank you!

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
