Beautiful Day Mystery Quilt Along Block 1: Starry-Eyed

Good morning and Happy Saturday!  Today is the release of the first block in the Beautiful Day Mystery Quilt Along….yay!

If you have missed the fabric requirements for this quilt along, you can find them here.

Each month, we are going to be making four different blocks using the same block pattern.  This month we will be making 4 simple Sawtooth Star blocks.  The blocks will feature the panel in the center.  You can see how the addition of the panel brings something special to these blocks.  If you have never worked with a panel before, please make sure to read all the way to the bottom of the post where I will answer some frequently asked panel questions and link to my video on cutting panel squares.  I’ve also created a video tutorial for the Starry-Eyed block which can be found here.  I’ll be sharing video tutorials for each block on the release day (the 3rd Saturday of each month).

Click here for the Starry-Eyed block pattern.

These blocks were so much fun to make.  They will finish at 16″ x 16″ square once sewn into the quilt top which means we won’t be working with small pieces.

I think it is so fun how that panel center makes even these simple blocks look so elegant.  When I designed this panel, I wanted it to look like traditional applique.  I am such an applique girl but don’t always have time to complete it.

I hope you all have so much fun making your Starry-Eyed blocks!

Now I wanted to take a few minutes to answer some of the questions that I’ve been answering most frequently.

“I’ve never worked with a panel before.  How do I cut it apart?”

Answer:  I shared a video on that earlier this week.  You can find it on my YouTube channel here.  I will also be sharing a video tutorial for each block release of this quilt along and would love if you’d subscribe so you don’t miss any of them.  Or any of the other new videos that I will be sharing.

“My panel is short on the top and/or bottom and I don’t have enough space to cut an 8 1/2″ square.  What do I do now?”

Answer:  Sometimes, we will get a panel that is just a little bit short on either the top or bottom if it was cut that way.  There are a couple different work arounds for this.  I’m going to share a couple different options with you:

  1.  You can always buy another panel.  We can often get around needing to buy another panel but it is the simplest fix. This quilt along will use 20 out of the 24 panel blocks.  Extra panel squares can be used for so many different things…pillows, runners, bags, pot holders etc.  You might like the idea of being able to make coordinating projects with the extra panel squares to go with your quilt.
  2. You might find that you are only short just a little bit on a couple blocks.  If that is the case, you can still use the panel square and opt to use a slightly narrower seam allowance on the short side.  For the Starry-Eyed blocks, if I had been a little bit short on one side of the center panel block, I could have sewn one of the flying geese to that side using slightly less than 1/4″ to compensate.
  3. If a narrower seam allowance won’t be enough to fix the shortage, you can add a little border piece of fabric to the short side.  I would cut a piece of background fabric (9900-200 matches the white color in both Beautiful Day and Apricot & Ash) 1″ to 1.5″ x 9″.  Sew this piece to the short side using a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Press your seam open.  Center and trim the block to 8 1/2″ square.  I used this method on a tea towel quilt I was working on a couple years ago.  I had purchased tea towels from Fancy That Design House before she was designing for Moda so I could use them to make a quilt.  Because of the placement of the motif at the bottom of the tea towels, I found that on some of them I needed to add a little bit more fabric to the bottom after I cut them from the towel.  Here is what one of those blocks looked like after I added the border:

Once this block is sewn within the quilt and quilted this little seam won’t really be noticed.

4.  You can also add an intentional, contrasting border around the entire, panel block and then trim it down to size.  I don’t know that anyone will use this method for our quilt along, but it’s nice to have the option.  I used this method when writing the pattern for my Praises quilt pattern so I could easily square everything up:

Praises Quilt Pattern. Pattern available in my Etsy shop.

Those are a couple different ways to work with a short panel.  I don’t want to scare anyone into thinking panels are always short…because they are often not.  But I want you to have as much info as you can so you know what to do in case yours happens to be.  I love the possibilities that having a panel adds to a line!

“I am starching my fabrics.  Should/Can I starch the panel also?”

Answer:  I did a little bit of hands on research to be able to give you guys the best answer for this.  I used a Beautiful Day fat quarter bundle with the included panel for my quilt just like many of you are using.  I pre-starched all of my fat quarters for this quilt along as well as the panel using the Lisa Bongean method of starching (the same method Kimberly Jolly uses) with Faultless spray starch.  I know some enjoy using this method of starching before cutting out fabrics.  If you aren’t familiar with this starching method, you can see Lisa talk about it here.

I typically reserve this method of starching for when I am piecing smaller blocks (6″ and smaller) but I wanted to see how the panel would behave with that method of starching…if I would run into any panel shortages.  Note: I want to mention again that, for me personally, I would not starch blocks of this size.  I wanted to provide this information for those of you that like to starch blocks of all sizes.

I had no problem with fabric shortage on any of the fabrics including the panel.  I was able to cut out all all of the 24 panel squares at 8 1/2″ square which was just what I wanted.

With that being said, I would recommend double checking your top/bottom panel blocks before deciding whether you’d like to starch or not.  The fabrics will shrink more from left to right but if you’re short on the top or bottom it’s something to consider.

The other thing I noticed is that I needed to be careful with how I dried the panel after it was starched.  With the amount of starch used, the panel becomes heavy, and is best dried flat so the weight doesn’t pull the motifs crooked.  Think about the difference in laying a sweater flat to dry as opposed to draping a sweater over a rod to dry.

And now some non-panel related questions. =)

“When will the 108″ wide Beautiful Day backings be in quilt shops?”

Answer:  Very soon!–the bolts that I ordered just arrived this week.  Quilts shops that ordered will be receiving them soon as well.

“How long is this quilt along?”

Answer:  This is a 6 month quilt along.  New blocks will be released on the 3rd Saturday of each month.  If you’d like those exact dates, here they are:

Thank you for sharing your expertise and the beautiful pattern. I am new to quilting and have learned so much from your inspirational videos. I am also using Apricot and Ash fabric. So lovely. Do you mind sharing which colors you are using for each block? I am afraid I will run out of fabric if I randomly go in and start cutting up my fat quarters. Thank you so much for all you do for us.

    • yodco says:

You are so welcome! I am only making one block each month using Apricot & Ash. You should choose 20 fat quarters of A&A and then use one FQ for each of your 20 blocks. Because Apricot & Ash is a smaller line of fabric, you will narrow down your choices to those with the most amount of contrast. Some of the prints with the white backgrounds are not going to have enough contrast to work well within the block…like the white on white gingham for example…or the prints with the little pluses on the white backgrounds.

Thanks, Corey! My bundle arrived on Tuesday, my panel arrived yesterday, and now I need to locate some Bella 200 around here. 🙂

The first block is really beautiful with the panel square inside! Thanks for all the guidance to help us be successful.

  6. Myrleen Manley says:

So happy to find this! Just this week I purchased TWO fat quarter collections so I have two panels. I bought them for Fat Quarter Shop charity quilt and other stuff. I LOVE the fabrics!! My shop didn’t mention your quilt along when i said I wasn’t sure about what I’d do with the panel.

  7. Kelly Ann Landers says:

The blocks are beautiful! Thank you for taking the time to do the research and provide the ‘above and beyond’ information on starching and what to do if the panels don’t quite measure up. I’m an experienced quilter and I appreciate every tip, trick and nugget of helpful info that will make my quilting journey stress free so I can just enjoy the process. You rock!

  8. Sandi Davis says:

So excited to start this quilt! I want to know if we should cut out only the 4 panels for this month or would it be ok to cut them all at 8.5 x8.5? Think while I wait for my yardage to arrive I could prepare the panel. Thanks!

  9. Kelli Lane Romanovsky says:

Just a note to say that there are rwo fabric lines out there named “Beautiful Day”. I bought the wrong one not realizing that this could occur. Never saw that before!

    • Corey says:

I saw that!…we name our fabric lines when we turn in our collections about a year before they are in quilt shops. So sometimes that happens.

  10. Sandi says:

Many thanks for the great videos and instructions on your blog. I had purchased an additional panel, so thank you for the ideas of projects in which I can use the extra blocks. I’m working on 3 different BOM’S at the same time. Hope I can keep up, at least I’ll give it my best shot.

    • Corey says:

I love having extra panel squares. It seems I just keep thinking of ways to use them. I have another quilt idea that I’ll be sharing soon.

  11. Marcy says:

I am using the red & white panel for this project and haven’t seen the other one in person. I may have gone slightly (or extremely) overboard on purchasing Holliberry fabrics and I’m wondering if the Beautiful Day red, white & green panel will coordinate with Holliberry for a Christmas version of the BOM?
Also, do you have any tips on cutting panel squares that are slightly crooked? I have a panel that seems to have been stretched on one end of the fabric & the bottom row of blocks are askew. It has not been starched or prewashed.
Thanks for the Mystery QAL! I really enjoy the mystery ones!

    • Corey says:

The reds aren’t quite the same in Holliberry and Beautiful Day. I don’t think I’d do the red background panel with Holliberry but you might be able to get away with the white background. As far as straightening those blocks, cut them as square as you can. I had a couple after I starched that weren’t as square. After piecing them into the blocks, I didn’t even notice. Our eyes are much more forgiving than our rulers!

  12. kimquiltsknitsstitches says:

I love the fabric and the blocks! I did. starch all of the fabric and some of the panel block designs are not square now…never even thought about that…If I re-wet the fabric and dry flat will that straighten them out? Thanks!

    • Corey says:

I responded to you down below but I’ll answer here too in case anyone is reading through the comments and wonders. 😃 I would cut the panel squares as straight as you can. I had a couple that weren’t as straight after starching as well. Now that my quilt is finished I couldn’t even tell you which ones they were.

  13. Irene says:

Can we go ahead and cut all the panels to 81/2 inches or will some be cut to a different size?
Thanks Corey for giving us a beautiful quilt to make.

  14. kimquiltsknitsstitches says:

I think my blocks will be fine (see comment from 3:45 pm today) I played around with them and all is good. I can’t wait to make my blocks tomorrow!

    • Corey says:

Oh good!…I had a couple that weren’t as square after stretching as well. I cut the motif as straight as I could and I couldn’t even tell you which ones they were now that my quilt is finished.

  15. kimquiltsknitsstitches says:

Can I cut the background fabric into one or 2 yard increments to make it easier to handle? Thanks!

    • yodco says:

You can…you will lose a little bit of fabric each time you make a cut but I did allow extra to work with in my yardage requirements.

  16. arden says:

Corey….Thanks for offering this. I have spent a ton of money on this line of fabric and am now adding this mystery BOM to the pile!
Is it possible for you to tell me which panel pieces and which FQ are to be used for March?? I will be traveling with my sewing machine and don’t want to haul the whole FQ stack with me, but want to keep up. Thanks in advance for your help….arden

  17. Kristy DeMille says:

Just curious, how do you store your finished blocks while you wait for next month’s and on to the finish? Just so they don’t get too creased and wrinkled? And do you have any idea when the 108″ backing will be available or if it is available anywhere?

    • kimquiltsknitsstitches says:

Kristy…I made a comment but forgot to use “reply” to you so hope you can find it 🙂

      • kimquiltsknitsstitches says:

hmmm…maybe didn’t go through. I store projects in 14 x 14 in plastic boxes from Michaels with hinged lids (they were half price). I made my own design boards to keep blocks separated and pieces organized. I can send you link but its on you tube…make your own design board with foam core and batting and edge the board with colorful masking tape. They are wonderful! Super easy to make and inexpensive. Or you can buy Lori Holts design boards on her sight and they are really nice too. There is backing at Fat Quarter Shop but they are almost out of the gray already 🙁

        • Kristy DeMille says:

Thank you! I do have the plastic bins which I use for most blocks but these are too big without folding them. I didn’t think about using a design board! I have smaller ones. I’ll have to make one to fit this block! Do you know anything about the wide backing listed for this quilt? Is it all sold out or has it not come into the shops yet? Thanks again

    • Sandi says:

Hi Kristy, The wide back is available at Fat Quarter Shop. They have the Scarlet and Slate. I just ordered mine.

  18. Kristy DeMille says:

How many yards of backing (regular width fabric) are needed for this quilt if we can’t find the wide backing?

  19. Barb says:

Your new collection is like a breath of fresh air! Love it!

  20. Gail says:

I’m looking forward to sewing along. I’ve ordered the dark panel but which is the Bella Solid that goes with this?

  21. kimquiltsknitsstitches says:

I am using the White on White for background fabric. I am assuming the right side is the side with the white printed on top? Thank you! Kim

  22. kimquiltsknitsstitches says:

I finished my blocks…so fun! and so pretty!

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
