Blockheads Block 3 & Free Coloring Page

Happy Blockhead day!  Today’s block is brought to you by Carrie Nelson.  And yes, it is block 3 even though in my photo it says “block 2”–I didn’t realize it until after the my post was completely finished and I didn’t want to retake my photo!  Just pretend it says block 3. =)

For the free pattern, you will want to visit the Moda Cutting Table Blog.

For my block, I opted to use some of the yellows and greens from my Pepper & Flax line.  I really enjoy how versatile this line is..leave out the greys and what a soft palette you have.

And here are the first three blocks together.  I don’t have a plan for fabric choices–I let the each block decide what it wants to be.

Here is the promised coloring page.  It was utilized quite a bit last week and I’m happy so many of you are finding it helpful.

Just click below to print and color.

I would encourage you to check out the other designer’s blogs as well as the Moda Blockhead Facebook page.  Both are such a wealth of information!

I have never done a mystery quilt before, and my perfectionist side is struggling a bit. My Block 2 looks so different from the colors in Block 1, even though I am working mostly with one designer’s fabric. How does this all come together to look cohesive in one quilt? I know you like scrappy quilts, but I don’t have much experience with them. I’m afraid my quilt will end up looking like a hot mess! Any tips? Thanks!

I understand your concern! As I mentioned in my post above, I decide what fabrics to use for each block as I am going–so it’s very unplanned. What I find to be very helpful, is to make sure and lay out all of the blocks together as I go along. So, maybe about 10 blocks in or so, I will lay everything out so I can see what fabrics I have been using. Sometimes I find I am too heavy in one color or I find that I need to add a little bit more darks or change my backgrounds. Then, when I begin working on the next few blocks I make those adjustments–leaving out colors I have over used or making sure to add in those darker backgrounds. I’ll then lay out all of the blocks again maybe in another 10 blocks or so and see what adjustments need to be made. This early in the game, just make sure each block is pleasing to your eye. As you go, especially if you are using fabrics from one designer they will start to meld together. When I look at my blocks right now, those yellows jump out at me but I know that within a larger quilt those yellows are going to blend right in.

Thanks for the advice! I’ll try not to worry too much and just trust that it will all work out in the end! 😊
