Fabric + Yarn = Love

I’m a little bit excited about this whole fabric crocheted afghan idea that I talked about on Friday–and I’m pretty excited to have so many people interested in crocheting along! =)  I twisted my mom’s arm, well I didn’t have to twist too hard, to go along with me to Joann’s to pick out some supplies on Saturday.  I really didn’t know what I needed so I really had to have her help.

I ended up with Sensations Cuddle Yarn in Turquoise & I decided to use yellow crochet thread for the blanket stitch around the edge.  Of course, a trial block was in order….so, more arm twisting ensued and Sunday evening was spent at Moms.

The blanket pattern uses 5″ squares–perfect for using up those extra charm packs that you have been hoarding. =)  I happened to have some Kate Spain Charm packs handy so I grabbed a couple squares, plus the fabrics matched my new crochet hook & yarn….very important.  And with my mom’s help:

I now have a little trial block.  It’s not perfect….and I am far from speedy, but it’s pretty cute, right?  And, I love that the back is going to be different than the front…if you want it to be…of course, you could use the same fabrics on the front and back.

So, if you want to join in here’s what you will need to start:

First off here’s the original blog post by Sewing Daisies with her pattern.

  • Charm Squares–You will need to decide how big you want your blanket to know how many charm squares you’ll need.  My completed block measures 6.5″ square.  So, I’m thinking maybe 52″ x 65″(a nice throw size).  I will need 80 completed squares ( my blanket will be 8 squares x 10 squares) which means I’ll need 160 charm squares.  The equivalent of 4 charm packs or 1 layer cake.
  • Yarn–I picked up 3 skeins.  I will need to purchase more as I go.  I am not concerned about the dye lot varying a bit.  If you are, make sure to purchase plenty of yarn, or purchase yarn without a dye lot.  You could also opt to use different colors of yarn.
  • Crochet Hook–Pick up the recommended crochet hook for the yarn you are using.  I am using a lighter weight yarn & the recommended hook is G which is what I purchased.
  • Perle Cotton or Crochet Thread–This is for the blanket stitch around the outside edge.  For my trial block I used 8 wt. Perle Cotton which works great.  For my Marmalade blanket I will be using Crochet Thread–it’s a little bit more cost effective & I am all about that.

And, there you have it.  I’ll be working on cutting up my charm squares, sewing together my squares and working on the blanket stitch.  I’ll keep sharing as I go along so you can play too. =)

My daughter and I are going to try a few squares and see what we think. It just might be the perfect take along project. Thanks for the inspiration.

Yes, yes, yes! I’m in. I love the look of the original project. I can’t wait to get started. I am going to use Curio by Basic Grey as my fabric. I’ve picked one pattern for one side and I’ll use the charm pack pieces on the opposite side. Mine will be solid on one side and multi prints on the other. Going for a vintage look. Thank you so much for finding this!

Interestingly enough, I have a small blanket made like this by my late Aunt back in the 60s. The squares are about 4″ and they are all in bright colors with black yarn borders. She actually stuffed each square with a nylon stocking, so it’s light but a little puffy. She had all her friends saving their nylons with runs in them for her. That, of course, was back in the day when everyone wore nylons-and before pantyhose! She was not a sewist, but was a veryproficient knitter & crocheter. She died about 4 years ago at age 96 and she knit till the end!

Lightbulb moment going on here… I love fabric, quilting, and crochet. What a great way to combine the three! I want to join in if I can find the time. Maybe it’s time to use those pretty charm packs I’ve been hoarding, hmmm?!?

    Yes I’m in Corey!!!!
Love your blanket and love the crochet style on it ^__^
I think I’ll use your rainbow charm squares for it … maybe they’ll be here for the first of July … I’d like the idea to make a coloured blanket with more different yarn colour ….
I’ll add other charm squares because 2 packs isn’t enough …. I’m going to find something in my stash that works ^__^ so excited.
    Thanks for this great inspiration!!!!!
And I’m looking for to see your blanket … block by block ^__^

I love this fusion blanket idea! I’m a stranger to crochet, but know how to sew. Will you be giving detailed instructions/tute on the crochet part? Something a beginner could follow along?

  12. Heidi says:

    Hey there!

I love what you are doing with the (kaffe) Fusion blanket.

You are right – the pattern isn’t perfect, but the end result is! Hope you all have fun with it and I can’t wait to see your finished blanket.

    cheers Heidi

I’m so excited to begin this!! I just love things that fall into the “take along” category! I would so like to purchase new fabric (who doesn’t want new fabric each time they begin a project?) But, I have a son beginning college in August and in the interest of being practical I think I’ll use this as a way to put a dent in my Lila Tueller Soiree fabric. It’s such bright fabric that I’ll be able to find a nice bright yarn color to go with it.

  14. Deborah says:

I really it. I think I may try to put another spin on it by using fleece instead of cotton fabric. Thanks so much

  15. Karen says:

I don’t know how to crochet but I want to make theses blocks. Where do I find the pattern? I am going to use them for pocket prayer quilts. Thanks. Karen

I want to make one. I love crochet and am learning to sew. But I made a sample with low loft quilt batting. And I like it. thanks for sharing

Wanted to know what a charm square or charm pack is – I haven’t heard of it – definitely would love to make one as my daughter works for a textile company and can send me samples

Do you crochet directly on the raw square or do you have to edge it first

i dont understand where you used the yellow cotton thread is it supposed to show

  19. Karol says:

Were you able to just poke through the material or did you use a cutter of some kind to make the holes for the yarn to go through?
