Moda Block Heads Block 18

Bird & Urn Quilt Block

Happy Block Heads day! =)  I hope today finds all of you healthy and well and ready for a little bit of fun sewing.  Our block this week is designed by Jan Patek.  You will find the pattern on her blog today.  If you prefer not to applique, there will be at least one alternate block posted on Friday.

I thought our Bird & Urn block this week was so cute.  Because I did the applique by machine, I did enlarge some portions of the stem to make it easier to do by machine.  And because of the small size of some of these pieces–especially on the smaller sized blocks, you may wish to do some (or all) of the machine work using a straight stitch.  I ended up combining the two stitches but, especially if you are new to applique, you might consider using all straight stitch.

I used a scrappy mix of fabrics and just love the springtime vibe.  I am ready for spring time weather.  I laid out all of my blocks so far and I am liking how they are coming together:

We still have so many pretty blocks to come and it’s exciting to see what each one adds to the quilt. =)

I also wanted to thank all of you who visited my new YouTube channel on Monday.  I have so many fun things planned.  We are still working out the ins and outs of making videos (and figuring out ways to improve!–we’ve made note that not many prefer background music and know we can work on some other things too) but it has been fun so far!

If you haven’t stopped by my channel and would like to, you will find it here.  In my first video I’ve shared more about my upcoming Holliberry line of fabric which will be in quilt shops in July.

I wish you all a wonderful Wednesday filled with lots of fun and joy. =) Corey

I enjoy doing applique. It really is very easy. I did a whole quilt a few years ago based on things he loves like airplanes & Jets & boats and tablets etc. I even made a block of the sailboat I used to fly in when I was getting up. I made many of the blocks 3D so he could play – eg. A stuffed fighter jet velcroed to the image of it and button ppl in the sailboat with little leather string lanyards to the mast. After that I didn’t do any applique until Jan’s bird block. Then I remembered how much fun it is. Since then I’ve made a few other blocks too like the hearts and some glampers. I always love your interpretation of the blocks. Thanks for inspiration & tips!

I’m not much of an applique quilter. I have a hard enough time getting regular pieced blocks working! This week’s block is super cute, though. Maybe I’ll give it a try eventually. I’m anxious to see the alternate block!

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
