Moda Block Heads Block 26 and fun layout

Zig Zags Block

Good Morning and welcome to week 26 of Moda Block Heads.  It is another hoooot day here in Ohio and it is a perfect day for staying inside, staying cool, and sewing.

Our block this week, Zig Zags, is brought to us by Janet Clare.  You will find the block pattern on her website today.  The block is a little bit different from previous weeks in that instead of enlarging the pieces to make the blocks larger, we make more half square triangles to make the block bigger.  Each block uses 1 1/2″ (1″ finished) HST’s–you just make more for the larger sized blocks.

I decided that I didn’t want to make extra HST’s…and instead opted to make the 4 inch size and add borders to bring it to 6 1/2″ square.

This has gotten me to thinking about the idea of bordering out more of the 4″ sized blocks in upcoming weeks.  It will be a really neat addition to my sampler and would allow me to set the blocks together easily by alternating bordered and non-bordered blocks if I wanted to.

I also wanted to share another layout idea that my friends at Moda emailed me about this past week that I thought was a wonderful idea.

This is my Friendly Neighbor quilt:

I wrote the pattern to showcase the fun panel in Apricot & Ash (fabrics come out next month).   But what’s fun is that the panel squares finish at 8″ within this quilt.  This means, it could easily be substituted with 8″ pieced blocks.

So, you could substitute pieced blocks in each of the white squares below, very easily:

And the pattern is fat quarter friendly–it’d be a great way to showcase 16 of your favorite 8″ Moda Block Heads blocks.  Isn’t that a fun idea!  It hadn’t even occurred to me to use this pattern in this way.  I was so tickled with this suggestion!

The Friendly Neighbor pattern is available in my shop in both PDF and Paper versions.

And if you wanted to make my original Friendly Neighbor quilt using the panel, the kit will be available in quilt shops next month.  It is being sold in one of those amazing Moda Boxes–I just got a peek of it and it’s so cute!

And here’s a peek at just the panel as a wholecloth quilt (it’s available in this colorway and on gray):

Happy Sewing! Corey
