Oh, Happy Day! Sampler Sew Along Week 6
I had hubby hold up my quilt this week when I took my photos for today’s blog post. Of course, his little buddy, Tiggs (the orange kitty) wanted in on the action as well. These kitties sure do bring laughter into our home…who knew we’d be the proud owners of two such silly stray kitties! You’ll be seeing more of Tiggs in this post. =)
You can see that our block for today’s Oh, Happy Day! sampler is the Ohio Girl block. And it’s such a fun one to piece.
I really like the striped “frames” in the Ohio Girl quilt. Just as I am drawn to a stripe for binding, when I am framing out blocks like this, I often reach for a stripe. And just in case you want to see what the Ohio Girl quilt might look like in in Buttercup & Slate (the fabrics I used in this block) here you go!
A couple weeks ago, over on YouTube, someone mentioned that they would like to see Ohio Girl in other fabric options since Apricot & Ash is so hard to find. So, sprinkled throughout this blog post, I’ll be sharing some other fabric options that I think would be pretty.
Just in case you are new here and unfamiliar with this sew along, you can read more about it here. Our block today is such a fun one to piece. Making over-sized quarter square triangles and trimming them down is such a great way to make an Ohio Star block. As in week’s past, I’ve shared a video tutorial for this block on my YouTube channel. You can find it here.
You can tell I really embraced the Ohio Star theme this week! =)
Cutting and Piecing Instructions for today’s block:
Turn to page 61 in your Oh, Happy Day! book. Under the “Materials” section, cut the pieces listed under “orange print”, “brown print”, and “white solid”.
The piecing instructions for today’s block can be found on pages 56-57. We are making one Block A. It will measure 12 1/2″ square when you are done piecing it.
The Ohio Star quilt block is one of my favorite blocks to piece. At the end of today’s video, I’ve shared a couple more Ohio Star quilts.
Tiggs was having too much fun behind that quilt!
And one final digital image of Ohio Girl:
I hope you all have fun sewing up your Ohio Girl block! If you weren’t a fan of the stitch/flip corners from last week, I think you will really enjoy this one. I think you’ll enjoy this one if you enjoyed last week also! =) Happy Sewing! Corey

I love seeing Ohio Girl in all of the different color options! I really struggle with colors!
I really like the way it looks in the Dwell fabric line!
Wow!! This quilt is just gorgeous in Buttercup & Slate! The softer shades make it so inviting 💛
I thought it was really pretty in those softer colors!
What does it take to relaunch the apricot and ash line?
It was actually re-printed once already!
Beautiful no matter what lines you use. I love those striped frames!
I am always drawn to stripes like that. =)
Took about 2 seconds for your selvdge quote on Buttercup &slate to register. Then I Laughed !
I love it!…I’ve gotten a few messages when people realize the quote and I love that little inside joke among those that know! =)
Ooh, I love Ohio Girl in Dwell fabric! I am enjoying this quilt along. Saturdays can’t come soon enough! Thank you for doing this, Corey!
It’s so striking in Dwell!
Corey, I completely agree about each block framed in stripe. Simply stunning!
I love the way a stripe can frame out a block!
Corey,
I recently (just yesterday) went to Berlin, Ohio! Such beautiful country side, fall colors, Amish & Mennonite people to chat with… so very wonderful people, went to the Plaid Sheep Quilt Shop searching you out but I think you were at Quilt Market. Would love to have met you as you inspire me and I love your fabric and quilt tutorials… you make it real and relatable! Since my daughter lives in Columbus Ohio I’m sure I’ll make my way there another time and maybe some day our paths will cross! Best Wishes!
Ina
I hope you had a wonderful visit Ina!…the weather and the leaves were so pretty over the weekend. It is still a beautiful fall day today but it’s cloudy…it makes me feel like snuggling inside with a good book! I do visit Plaid Sheep Company but I’m more apt to stop in during the week when it’s not quite as busy. =) I hope you have a wonderful week!
