Oh, Happy Day! Sampler Fabric Requirements

Happy Thursday!  Today, I am pleased to release the fabric requirements for the Oh, Happy Day! sampler sew along.

If you’ve missed the details about this sew along here is the information that I’ve shared so far.

The Oh, Happy Day! sew along will kick-off when Buttercup & Slate fabrics have shipped to quilt shops.  The kick-off date will be announced as we get closer to a more firm shipment date.  At this point, it looks like the sew along will begin sometime in September…but, of course, this could change if the fabric shipment dates change.

The sew along is a 12 week sew along and features blocks made from my book Oh, Happy Day!  You will need a copy of the book to participate in this sew along.  It can be purchased in local quilt shops now or I have signed copies available in my Etsy shop here.

The exact blocks we are using from the book as well as the setting is a mystery.

I will be sewing along with you, using Buttercup & Slate fabrics.  You do not need to use Buttercup & Slate to participate and can choose whatever fabric line you would like to use.

Buttercup & Slate fabrics will be in quilt shops locally and online that carry Moda Fabrics.  You can check with your favorite shop to see if they will be carrying them.

Just as with the Beautiful Day Mystery sew along, I will be sharing video tutorials for each block on my YouTube channel.  New videos will be released weekly.

You do not need to sign up to participate, just stop by my blog each week once the sew along kicks off to find out the weekly information.

The finished quilt will be a throw sized quilt at 62″ x 62″.

I would say this is an intermediate level sew along.

    Hey Corey!
I’ve never done a sew along, although I do make quilts. I’ve been following the Blockheads on FB just see how it goes. Your new fabric line is so pretty I think it’s convinced me to join. Thank you for sharing your passion and obvious joy of quilting. It’s contagious in the best possible way.

Is there a place I can preorder these fabrics and the book and be all ready to begin? I am an hour away from Berlin so I could even arrange to pick it up! Lone Star is my absolute favorite!!

Hi Corey, Looking so forward to this sew along! I was thinking of using the 60” fabric in this collection for the backing. I know it will be slightly short, and was thinking of adding another fabric from the collection to frame it out, and make it bigger for my longarner. Do you think that would look OK, or would it be better to use 42” as normal. I will be getting some of the 60” for backing on smaller projects. Thanks so much for your input. Have a great weekend.

    • Corey says:

Yes!…I think that would be pretty. You could check with your longarmer but, I think I would be inclined to just add extra to one side of the 60″ rather than framing it out. Your longarmer will need the extra 4″ on all sides but once it gets trimmed down, there will only be about an inch overage on each of the 4 sides. This means your longarmer will really need to center up the top and backing very well or it won’t look as nice and you could potentially be dealing with a seam right up against the edge of your quilt that you’d need to mess with when you bind if it’s a little bit uncentered. Does that make sense?

    • Sandi Silvestri says:

Hi Corey, the more I mull this over, I’m going to get the fabric you recommended for the back. Think I had a brain blip. I do love the 60” wide and will get some for other projects.

      • Sandi Silvestri says:

Yes it absolutely does. I posted the reply above, before your commented showed up on my iPad. I always appreciate how quickly you respond to all of us. Stay cool!

  4. I am looking forward to the sew a long. I pre-ordered a fq bundle of Buttercup and Slate but am undecided if I want to use that or dig into my stash of Pepper & Flax. Maybe a combination of both? Decisions…decisions:)

Thank you so much for combining all the information in one post. I find it very discouraging when information is strung out over a few weeks time.

  6. What a spectacular photo of the bundle on a cake plate… I adore it!
I know how much work goes into producing that photo… great job!

    • Corey says:

Thank you so much! I picked up that cake stand at a local antique shop because I knew it’d be perfect for taking pictures of bundles. =) It’s always so fun to find a perfect little piece like that.

Hello! Looking forward to this next sewalong!

Would a dark background other then white look okay with this pattern? If so, what would you suggest. I would love to have a quilt with a background other then white!

    • Corey says:

Awesome!…yes, you could. I would suggest either Moda Bella solid in the color Etchings Charcoal or Etchings Slate. Etchings Charcoal is the darker of the two. Either one of those dark gray colors compliments the line (neither one is an exact match but I like both of them with the line). You would also then want to swap out 29158-17 for the same print on the white background for contrast. I think you’d want a different border fabric but maybe not…you could wait to decide on that outer border and backing if you wanted to. And as we are working along, you would want to make some changes to the prints you choose for each block so they have more contrast. Where I’ve chosen a gray to contrast against my white background, you could choose the same print on the white background so it’d contrast with your darker background.

Hello Corey – Thank you so much for the help and ideas – that is exactly what I needed help with and I’m going with this version.

  9. Hi Corey,
Can’t wait for this sew along. Just pre-ordered a fat quarter bundle!

  10. Patty Jones says:

Looking forward to this Corey! I have my fq bundle of Buttercup & Slate that I pre-ordered and arrived earlier this week…….now to decide if I can bear to break it open already, or if I want to choose different fabrics for this. I always love your sewalongs, as your patterns are always well written and easy to follow, and your sweet personality is such a day brightener on your blog and your youtube channel.

    • Patty Jones says:

Oops!! I just realized I mis-spoke, I received a different fq bundle I had pre-ordered earlier this week and am anticipating my Buttercup and Slate bundle next month sometime hopefully. It has been a very long and exhausting work week working with my hubby this week and I have had zero time to sew or drool over my new fabrics, so I got a little mixed up. I am very much looking forward to getting this FQ bundle!!!! I missed out on Pepper & Flax and have been so disappointed over that.

I’m looking forward to sewing along with you.

  12. Mary Scott says:

I am so looking forward to this sew along I have never done one before. I work full time so I hope I can keep up. I love this fabric line and cannot wait for my pre order bundle to get here.

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
