Oh, Happy Day! Trunk Show

Today I’m excited to share an Oh, Happy Day! trunk show.  I’ll be chatting here on my blog about the projects as well as sharing a video on my YouTube channel.  This is going to be a newsy blog post so grab your favorite Saturday morning drink and let’s have fun. =)

If you’d like to skip right over to the video, you can find it here.

Let’s dive in!  Oh, Happy Day! is my newest book…it is in quilt shops now.  My idea behind the book is the many reasons that quilts make us happy and why that might be so.  I came up with various categories and then designed quilts to fit those categories.  Quilts might make us happy because they are made for a friend or for a new baby.  Maybe a quilt made for Christmas or made using your favorite colors might be fun.  I’m sure that you can come up with many different reasons a quilt makes you happy.

Oh, Happy Day! includes 11 quilts and 10 pillows.  I’ve included instructions to easily turn any one of the blocks from each quilt into a pillow.  This means that you can try out the blocks before committing to a whole quilt of them.  It also allowed me to show you how the block looks in different fabrics and quilting motifs.

Within each project, I’ve included information on the fabrics I used as well as the quilting design my quilter Kaylene Parry used for each quilt & pillow.  I am often asked about the quilting on my projects so including that information right in the book will be so helpful for all of you!

Let’s dive into the projects.  Up first is Proposal..this is “the one made with fat quarters”.  PS…if you watched my behind the scenes videos on the making of Oh, Happy Day!, you’ll know there is a little nod to the tv series Friends.  Martingale added the sweetest detail to the book because of this.  I shared about that little detail in my video today.

Proposal uses 9 fat quarters.

I used Tilda fabrics for my quilt…I love these warm colors.

Up next is Best Loved.  Best Loved is “the one made with your favorite colors”.

I am smitten with the color palette of Basic Grey’s Cider collection.  Those prints mixed with those grunges are so pretty.  This pattern lends itself so well to a graduation of color.

The 3rd quilt in the book is Friends Forever.  The happy category for this quilt is “the one made for a friend”.

This quilt is fun because it is a two for one project.  As you are working on the main quilt, pictured above, you will have cut-offs left over to make a second quilt.  It’s basically the quilt equivalent of those two-piece heart necklaces we shared with our bestie in junior high. =)  The quilt below is the bonus quilt you can make…you’d only need backing fabric and binding fabric to complete the second quilt.

Generations of Love is “the one Grandma made”.

This is a simple to piece jelly roll quilt that shines using At Home fabrics by Bonnie & Camille.

Sweetcake is another precut friendly quilt.  It features the layer cake and fits in the category “the one made with a Moda Layer Cake”.

Layer cakes are probably my favorite precut and I can never have too many layer cake patterns!

Oh, Happy Day (the cover quilt and the book’s namesake) is “the one made with solids”.

I started with the floral print from Sunnyside Up as the border and picked my solids to coordinate.

Hand quilted quilts are definitely quilts that make me happy.  Solitude is “the one that’s hand quilted”.

This is a smaller wall hanging sized quilt finishing at 36″ square.  If you’ve never hand quilted before, this is a very manageable size.  I am planning a hand quilting series on my YouTube channel so if this is something you’d like to learn how to do, make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss it. =)

Ohio girl is “the one made with your favorite quilt block”.  Do you have a favorite quilt block?  For me, as an Ohio girl…the Ohio Star block is my favorite.  It seems to shine in all quilts.

I also loved highlighting a stripe to frame out the borders around each block.  Stripes can be tricky to use in pieced quilts but they really add some pizzazz when used correctly!

I love this next quilt..and it’s Elonie’s favorite one also.  Slow Down is “the one made for baby”.

So many quilters get into quilting because they want to make a quilt for a new baby.  That’s a reason to be happy!

The last quilt in the book is Twinkle & Shine and it is “the one made for Christmas”.

I’ve had this design in my sketchbook for years and it was time to bring it to life. =)

I hope you have enjoyed this peek inside the pages of Oh, Happy Day!  If you’d like to see these quilts in more detail and see all of the pillows from the book, be sure to stop by my Oh, Happy Day! trunk show over on YouTube.

Oh, Happy Day! is in quilt shops now.  I also have signed copies available in my shop.  You will want to make sure to snag your copy for an upcoming (think fall) quilt along. 😉

Thank you for stopping by! Corey

Absolutely delightful Corey! I admire you using other designer’s collections to make some of your quilts. The cover quilt has my heart!! Twinkle & Shine is my next favorite. Slow down is adorable! You are sew right, the stripes used to frame your favorite block, Ohio Stars really makes them pop. Looking forward to purchasing my book at Box Car Quilts in Crossroads, Texas. Have a lovely weekend. This was certainly a beautiful post to start mine! Much continued success to you. It made me “Happy” to watch and share your journey as you brought your book to fruition. It is beautiful and I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy. Then deciding which quilt to start on first will be my dilemma. I hadn’t thought I was a big fan of solid color quilts but “O Happy Day” and “Twinkle and Shine” have changed my mind. They are on my to do list for sure! Hoping for your continued success. Have a happy day! Debbie

Just received my book. Pictures are great as are the patterns and stories. My first project will be Friends Forever using Spring Brook. Can’t wait to get started!

Hello. I’ve already received your book and can’t wait to get started making some of your patterns. Can you share the Bella solids you used on “Oh Happy Day”? It’s always challenging trying to order coordinating colors on-line. Thank you!

  11. O my! I love them all but if I had to choose they would be….Friends Forever, Slow Down (would be amazing in batiks) but like you as as a native Buckeye, Ohio Girl is my favorite, I’m thinking reds, white and blues.
Fall is what I miss most about Ohio so I tend to make a lot of Fall colored quilts. I have used and stockpiled all of Sandy Gervais’s Fall fabric lines so count me in for your quilt along, cannot wait.

  12. Tami Bucklew says:

Great projects…I love your choice of fabric….I, too have been making many of my bindings with strips…thank you for the ideas!!! 😆

I am really drawn to your Best Loved quilt. The one with the Ohio Star is my second choice. Love that you included pillow projects of each quilt!

Love the new book! My two favorite quilts are Proposal, and the cover quilt. I’m not usually a solids person. However I was just in my fabric cabinet, and rediscovered a big FQ bundle of Kona solids, my husband bought me when we were at out local quilt shop, some years ago. I’ll be on the lookout for a nice print to use for the border, then I’ll pick my solids. A question Corey, on the Proposal quilt what is the taupe colored fabric from the inner border and the squares? I just love the color. Thanks so much.

  17. I really love them all but my favorites are Ohio Star, Oh Happy Day, Friends Forever, and Sweetcake. They are all Beautiful!! Thank You Barb 😊
