Sewcialites Round 2, Block 1

It’s week 1 of the Sewcialites sew along hosted by Fat Quarter Shop.  After just a little bit of time off from the weekly Moda Blockheads blocks, it’s fun to be diving into the weekly blocks of the Sewcialites sew along once more.

I don’t know how many details you’ve heard about this round of Sewcialites.  When Fat Quarter Shop asked each of us to participate in designing a block for this round, they asked us to submit a block that we are crazy about.  It could be a block that we are crazy about or one that makes us crazy…you’re going to have to guess which one I submitted! =)

Our block this week, is Perennial and it was designed by Bev McCullough of Flamingo Toes.   You can find the free pattern here. I’m not sure which this was for Bev (crazy about or makes her crazy) but for me, it made me a little crazy LOL! =)  I placed my fabrics a little bit wrong and didn’t want to fix them so my block has “unique” color placement.  And I also think I trimmed my outer corners wrong. LOL!  It’s still cute but it’s not how I meant it to be!—it just has extra “character”.

Next week, I’ll aim for less character. =)

My block is the 3″ size and I used a mix of Spring Brook and Buttercup & Slate fabrics.  I tried out a new tool for pressing seams open.  I’m sure many of you have tried it out before and may own one yourself.  It’s called a Strip Stick.

They come in different sizes and I purchased mine in the 18″ size because if I like it, I want to be able to use it for seams of all sizes.  So far, (after just this one block) I do like it and did find it made pressing seams open easier and faster.  I’m going to keep using it in the upcoming weeks and I’ll keep you all updated about what my thoughts are.  I purchased mine from Primitive Gatherings and it is available in a variety of sizes.

Happy sewing & see you back here tomorrow for another Oh, Happy Day! sampler sew along block. =) Corey

I cannot believe that I have come across the beginning of this program. Is there an information post that gives general information about it, ie fabric needed, how many pattern posts, day they are posted, in case one or so is missed directions to retrieve them. I am giddy to begin.

Thank you so much, while I have been sewing and quilting for many years, I have just become interested in these programs. I love to see and hope to take advantage of the blocks by these very talented designers.I just have to remember to check on my tablet at the right time.

Oh, my dear Corey. I feel so much better about my “oopsies.” Since I admire your work and skill so much — and you can share (’cause we probably wouldn’t have noticed) you make booboos, too — maybe I can now stop being so hard on myself!

My small quilting group has decided to participate in this round – cute block to start us off! (And I’ll probably add plenty of ‘character’ along the way… LOL!)

You are keeping it real! Love your block. I also have already had to recut one piece.
Looking forward to Oh, Happy Day! block #4 tomorrow. Also working on hand quilting, thanks for all you do

Love your basic background print used in this block #1 of Sewcialites Round 2. Please tell me what it is. I am making a couple of baby quilts using your Buttercup & Slate and Cozy Up. This choice of background would be adorable for these twin little girls.

  10. Corey, I really think your block has great character! I’m thinking I may try to copy yours. I actually was not thrilled with the original block because I’m not sure I can do it! I’m using Spring Brook so I may be able to match your color placement at least. I was a little concerned with my limited ability to choose fabrics so using yours will help I’m sure! As I watched Kimberly make it, I wondered if I actually could do it. Maybe I will try to make yours instead. LOL! Yes, yours has character. Love it!

    yours look different

I love your block – ripped mine out 3 times before I got it right. Yours looks better than mine. It has much more character!!!

  13. It looks amazing, especially all the “character” 🙂

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
