Sunny Patches Sew Along: HST Jelly Roll Block

It’s the kick-off of the Sunny Patches sew along.  We are going to have so much fun!–I’m so excited to have you joining in. =)

First of all, if you are new to this sew along, you will find more details and an introductory video here & I shared the fabric requirements here.

We are going to start this sew along with the pattern for the Half Square Triangle (HST) Jelly Roll Block.  We need 29 of these blocks for the setting of our quilt.  I’m sharing this pattern first so that you can work on these blocks throughout the sew along.

They go together pretty quickly…I’ve already made all of them for my Beautiful Day version of this quilt.  And now, I am working on my Sunwashed ones with you all. =)

The HST Jelly Roll Block Pattern is available to download here.

I’ve also filmed a video going over today’s block that you can find here.  I’ll be sharing a tutorial video every Saturday of this sew along.  If you are not already a YouTube channel subscriber, I would love to have you!  It’s a fun chatty group over there and it’s always so much fun to chat with everyone!

There may be some of you not participating in the sew along who might still wish to use this block in a quilt.  It works really well by itself.  If you follow the pattern, you’ll end up with 30 HST jelly roll blocks.  Here are two fun ways to lay out just these blocks:

Or:

You can rotate these blocks in so many different ways.  These layouts are both made using 5 blocks across by 6 blocks down resulting in a quilt that would measure 57 1/2″ x 69″.  Of course if you are participating in the Sunny Patches sew along, we will be laying them out in combination with our monthly mystery blocks in the layout I shared last month which you can see below.

New blocks for the Sunny Patches sew along are releasing on the 3rd Saturday of each month through October.  The dates are as follows:

March 18: HST Jelly Roll Block

April 15: Mystery Block #1

May 20: Mystery Block #2

June 17: Mystery Block #3

July 15: Mystery Block #4

August 19: Mystery Block #5

September 16: Mystery Block #6

October 21: Mystery Block #7

Thank you so much for stopping by! Corey

Corey, I’m SO excited for this sew along!! I fired up my computer this morning before I even made breakfast looking for today’s video! I’m loving Sunwashed and coincidentally it starts on what would have been my dad’s 87th birthday and has additional videos coming out on my mom’s, my best friend’s and my “favorite” aunt’s birthdays. I’m looking forward to a great year with Coriander Quilts =)

How do I find a way to print the layout pattern? 🤗

    • Corey says:

The layout pattern will be released at the end of the sew along and there will be a printable PDF pattern at that time. Any of the images in this blog post can be right clicked & then copy and pasted into a program like Microsoft Word and printed from there.

  11. Leona says:

Looking forward to this QAL! Just wondering, will the leftover jelly rolls be used in the mystery blocks?

I have a jelly roll of your Apricot and ash I want to use. My question is the mystery blocks going to need yardage as I have another jelly roll of the same pattern and I can’t find any of the coordinating fabrics to use!

  14. Earlene Flint says:

So excited!!! First sew along with you! Can’t wait to get started!!!

  15. That fabric is SO beautiful that it literally just took my breathe away! I wasn’t planning on doing any new sew alongs as I’ve lots of kits I want to get done, but for this I cannot resist. The patterns are great, too. Thank you so much, my quilting mentor and friend!

  16. Judy says:

This is my first sew along I will be doing with you. I love your cheery colors. I also enjoy seeing your “mascot” Tiggs. He just adds an extra level to quilting with you.

  17. Dixie Donovan says:

Where am I missing the directions to print for the block?

    • Corey says:

Underneath the 3rd photo from the top of this blog post in large red letters look for “the HST Jelly Roll Pattern is available to download here”. Click that to download the pattern.

I am looking forward to getting started on this one! I am also now working on your A Very Coriander Christmas Quilt and I want to make it four block larger to fit my king size bed. I can repeat four of the blocks…. but I was wondering if you have any other patterns with those large 18.5 inch blocks that I could purchase so all blocks are different? Thanks for all you do!

    • Corey says:

The other patterns I have that would include 18 1/2″ blocks are: Cotton Frock, Sunny Flowers, Joy Filled, and Picket Fence Cottages.

      • erin says:

Thank you! I snagged several of these from your Etsy shop! Can’t wait to choose the extra blocks and get the top finished up!

  19. Theresa says:

Hi Corey. Will we be using any of strips from the jelly roll for the Mystery Blocks? I made a boo-boo and trying to figure out how to recover and if we don’t need any of the straps, I should be good. Thanks and love this so far.

  20. Marian Gray says:

Hi Corey! I am a big fan of yours! Your collections are all beautiful and you have such a cheery attitude on your videos which I enjoy watching! I want to do your Sunny Patches quilt along using your Spring Brook collection if I can find the extra yardage I will need. I already have a jelly roll and a fat quarter bundle. Could you please suggest which fabrics I should use for the extra yardage like background, etc. I am relatively new to quilting so I have trouble with that.
    Thank you,
    Marian Gray

  21. James E Armstrong says:

Hello, We enjoy your videos and will be joining you in creating this quilt. My question has to do with starching. Do you recommend starching before sewing the strip sets together. Thank you in advance, Jim

  22. Nikki W says:

I am using a Beautiful day jelly roll with etchings grey as my background. For my mystery blocks, I was going to use Sunwashed. Any suggestions on colors from Sunwashed that would coordinate with Beautiful day. TIA!!

    • Corey says:

If you are using Etchings Gray as your background you’ll probably want to stick with the fabrics from Sunwashed that have a light background. This will provide more contrast against the gray fabric which will also be used in the mystery blocks.

  23. Jana says:

I am a tad short on the fabric I wanted to use for the background. I should have enough for HST Jelly Roll Blocks but I am wondering if any of the background fabric going to be used in the mystery blocks? Thank you!

  24. Pati says:

I plan on joining this sew along too but I have a question re: Happy Day sew along re: borders, I was wondering if you cut your borders WOF or LOF, just need to do borders on your Happy Day SAL.
    Thanks
    Pati
