Wondering Wednesday Week 9

Some of my favorite Bella Solids

Welcome to week 9 of Wondering Wednesday.  Once again, I have a fun line up of questions that you have left for me to answer.  You guys are making this so much fun for me! =)

Peggy says: “Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions…My Wondering Wednesday question is, do you feel the Bella Solids have a true right and wrong side?  Or does it not matter?

Answer:  I wasn’t sure about the answer to this question Peggy!  I know I have never worried about wrong/right side of Bella Solids and have always been happy with the outcome.  But, because I wasn’t certain, I reached out to Carrie Nelson to see what she said…and here’s the word on the street:

“They don’t have a right or wrong side. From dyeing to finishing, they’re essentially reversible. Even the Silky Bellas, if there is a discernible difference, I haven’t seen it. And/or I need stronger glasses.”

So, there you have it!  You can use either side of a Bella Solid without fear of one side being different or more “right” than the other.

Sewing Room Peek

Stephanie Feador says: “Thanks for sharing…I love these posts!  Question…do you keep a certain amount of each of your fabric lines so when it goes out of print you still have some or do you just keep a quilt from each line to remember your fabrics (or both)?”

Fat Quarters of various lines

Answer:  So far, I am making sure to keep a fat quarter bundle of each line but do not have yardage of all of my fabrics.  My mom just asked me last week if I know how many fabrics I’ve designed and I sure don’t! =)  But, I do know that I wouldn’t have space to store it all if I kept yardage of all of it.  I do have quilts made using my lines but I will also need to start letting those go….they are adding up too!

Backing for a quilt

Robin Elliott says: “I love reading all of the information you have to offer!  I would love to know how you label your quilts.”

Answer:  (sheepishly) I don’t label my quilts.  But, if you are a subscriber to American Patchwork and Quilting and you have your newest issue the one that just came out (February 2020), on the very last page of the magazine, you can see how my Grandma Lulu labels her quilts…she’s a pro labeler. =)  And I have been tempted so many times to join the Sweetwater label club as incentive to label my quilts.

Canning Day Prints

Lori D.awn asks: Do you think you can have a 108 inch backing for your next fabric line?  I just adore your color palette.

Answer:  Canning Day (coming out in February) does have 108″ wide backing.  It is the print in the photo above in the red, aqua, and gray shades.

Idyllic in yellow

Jillene Robison asks: “Hello Corey, I love your work and fabrics!  Their bright, sweet colors and patterns bring cheer to my life!  As a follow up to an earlier Wondering Wednesday, keep the yellow coming!  I love yellow.  I’d like to make a quilt featuring yellow and white.  Do you have any recommendations for a two toned quilt in your sunny yellows?  Thank you!”

Answer:  When my first fabric line, Prairie came out, I knew I wanted to design a yellow/white quilt and I designed my Idyllic quilt specifically so it could be used with prints or solids.  I wanted something that looked pretty traditional to really show off that “cheddar’ shade of yellow I use so often.

Idyllic Quilt Yellow/White

The yellow solid I used is Bella in Goldenrod which I love so much.  It is such a warm, buttery shade of yellow.  The amazing quilting was done by Natalie Bonner of Piece N Quilt.

If you were thinking of something using more scrappy, yellow prints, I really like the way Tulip Market looks made using all yellows.

And there you have it–another Wondering Wednesday in the books.  I will most likely be taking off the next two Wednesdays as they are holidays but will be back in the New Year to answer your questions.  So leave any questions you have here for me to answer next year (isn’t that crazy to think about!)

Be back on Friday with the Finishing instructions for our Sunday Best Quilts sampler! Corey

Hi Corey. I love the photo you included this time of a peek at your sewing room. I do have to ask though, is that two bolts of silver lame lined up there on the wall of fabric? What are you going to use it for? I’m just curious…..

    • Corey says:

Ha!–I think what you are seeing is one of the Bella Solids still in the plastic wrapping they come in when you purchase the whole bolt–I haven’t unwrapped it yet and it does look shiny!
