Moda Blockheads Round 5 Kick-Off (plus September $5 pattern)

Happy Wednesday Friends!  This blog post is going to be full of so much information and photos so be sure to read all the way to the end so you don’t miss anything!

First of all, today is the kick-off of the 5th round of Moda Blockheads!  Yay!  Who all is joining in?  I have joined in on every round and have been one of the block designers starting in round 2.  It is always so much fun!  Here are the 4 Moda Blockheads quilts I have made over the last several years.

Year One:

Year 2:

Blockheads 2 quilt

And another Year 2 photo because…baby Frances!  You don’t get to see her as often as Tiggs on the blog.  She’s a little bit more elusive LOL. =)

Year 3:

And a prettier Year 3 picture but you can’t see the quilt in full:

Those first 3 years, I did a scrappy mix of my fabric lines which resulted in a bunch of sherbet-y goodness. =)  For the round 4 quilt, I stuck with only Cozy Up for a fall themed quilt:

For this quilt, I couldn’t find where I shared a photo of the finished quilt but I did share a video of the finished quilt and you can see it here.

I backed it with minky fabric and it’s such a cozy quilt.  It gets used often!  So, what are my plans for Round 5?  Well, I’m glad you asked!  If you are a member of my Coriander Quilts facebook group, I mentioned what I was thinking about using.

I am mixing together a combo of Blueberry Delight and Peachy Keen.  Blueberry Delight is by Anne Sutton and, Peachy Keen, by me. =)  They are both scheduled to be in quilt shops next month.  I think they look so pretty together!  I tore open my fat quarter bundles yesterday and chose the exact fabrics I wanted to use.  Of course Tiggs had to get in on that action! =)  I have a new assistant who took many of these fabric photos.  As I was talking to her, I told her that sometimes Tiggs has to come over and check things out.  Those words had no sooner left my mouth when there he was! =)  He’s a predictable fabric loving kitty…that’s for sure! =)

I am planning a mix of the blues along with just a pop of the corals/peaches.

I’ll be using those low volume whites at the top for my backgrounds.

I think these two lines of fabric mix together beautifully.

I don’t have very many quilts that include a lot of blue…aquas, yes!—but not as many blues.  This will be a fun project to work on over the next several months.

We have our first block of this round, a bonus block, available for download today.  It is the Autograph Star block by Barb Groves.

She designed it to be used as a label for the back of the quilt.  I’m not sure that I’ll use mine for a label…I’m going to wait and see for sure.  But, it’s sure nice to have that option ready to go.  I am the worst at labeling my quilts!

You can find the pattern for the Autograph Star block here.

If you are unfamiliar with the Moda Blockheads program, you can find more information here.  I would also suggest bookmarking the Moda Blockheads 5 archive page.  It is going to be a wealth of information in the upcoming months as it will be updated to include new information each week including the block patterns.  I plan to post my blocks here weekly, as well, on Wednesdays just as I’ve done in years past.

Now, let’s move onto the second part of this blog post.  I told you it was going to be full of fun things! =)  My September $5 pattern of the month is Acorns. =)

You’ll find the pattern in my Etsy shop for just $5 for this month.  It’s available in either a PDF or Paper version so make sure to snag the one you’d like.  I also wanted to make you aware that my Etsy pattern shop will be closed from September 14-24.  So if you want to grab the pattern be sure to do so either before the 14th or keep an eye out for my shop to open back up on September 25 and grab it then.

Ryan & I filmed a video where I’m chatting about the Acorns quilt pattern and sharing a bit more of the quilt details.  I’d love if you’d watch!  You can find the video here.

Thanks so much for stopping by and happy sewing! Corey

I certainly agree this year is flying by. Your Peachy Keen collection and that of Anne Sutton do blend together so nicely. Looking out my window at the two lovely oak trees in my yard I know I need to make the Acorns quilt. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

I have a question as this will be my first Moda Blockhead project. Is it actually 2 different projects? It seems the first session can make a lap quilt. Is there an option to add the blocks from the 2 sessions together to make a larger quilt? Thanks for your help

    • Corey says:

I will be using all of the blocks I make to make one larger quilt rather than two smaller. You can do it either way. There will be setting instructions for this first little pre-Christmas round and then there will be setting instructions for the post-Christmas round. I would imagine there will be various options for combining all of the blocks into one quilt as well as I know there will be other quilters going that route. Moda Blockheads works a little bit differently with regard to the setting information. There are usually a number of different options shared by Moda and then also settings offered by the various designers and you’ll also see quilters in the Facebook group going in completely different directions. Not everything is shared up front as many of us decide what we’d like to make as we go (myself included!). I haven’t yet decided how I am planning to set all of my blocks. I only know I’ll be combining everything (unless I change my mind!). The blocks can be made into so many different projects.

Thank you Corey for your explanation. I think I’ll also wait to decide how to set them. I appreciate all you do for the quilting community!

  12. Debra S BOHN says:

Thank you for orchestrating another BH QAL. I’ve enjoyed them all especially #3, and I can’t wait to see the finished quilt in the cheery blue & peach fabric line. The autograph block is such a wonderful idea, I will be using it in other projects for sure!

  13. Chris Chamberlain says:

Love Ann Suttons blues and your Peachy Keen!! It’s going to make a beautiful quilt. I may have to wait to start my blocks after the fabric comes out!

  14. Denise says:

Corey- can’t wait to meet you tomorrow at your trunk show at the Amish Country Quilt Festival! Bought my tickets today!!!

  15. Lianne Sterkel says:

Hi Corey, I’m joining into my first Blockheads QAL adventure. So exciting. I need to figure out if FQs work best for this QAL or other precuts or simply yardage. Looks like you’re going with FQs. Any advice would be terrific. 🙂

    • Corey says:

For previous rounds, I’ve either used fat quarters or used scraps from my scrap bins and both options seemed to work pretty well. If you are planning on making the 12″ size blocks, I would probably steer away from the smaller precuts as they really limit the size of the pieces you can cut from them and they would result in more fabric waste.

  16. Nikki W says:

This is my first Blockhead. I want to combine all the blocks from both sessions. My question is how do you know how many of each size to make? I would like a variety of both sizes. Did you make your bonus block 6″ or 12″? TIA!!

    • Corey says:

I am planning to make all 6″ blocks. If you are making both sizes, you might want to consider how you are going to set them in the final quilt and then you’d know how many of each size you’d need.

  17. Sandy Cole says:

I just finished my pumpkin quilt from August’s 5$ pattern, so cute! Fast & easy, too! Trying to decide if September’s pattern or Blockheads is next on my list. Corey, your fabric selection for Blockheads is beautiful!

  18. Susan R says:

Love your newest fabric you used along with Blueberry – a nice combo and of course, your kitten and cat are adorable 🙂 I enjoy seeing all your posts and definitely need to purchase these fabrics and quilt – thank you!

  19. Jane McDaniel says:

My favorite part of this post are the kitty photo bombs!! Frances looks so tiny and Tiggs looks like he’s king of the world. And ff course, I love seeing the past years quilts too. Thanks for sharing.

  20. Corinne Haehl says:

I am waiting for both of the fabric lines you chose to be available. I will be a little late getting started but that’s OK.

  21. Jillian Belan says:

Tiggs will look beautiful in all that blue fabric 😻

Hey Friends!--I'd love to hear from you. =)
