Sunny Patches BOM: Sunny Churn Dash Block

Not a chance that Tiggs will be upstaged by a quilt block. He’s making sure you can’t see anything important.

This is the blog post where Tiggsy steals the show as I try to take photos of the next block in our Sunny Patches BOM.

I gave taking these photos my best shot.  But, Tiggs was having none of me spending time on anything else but giving him attention.  There was loud purring, head bumps, rubbing against my leg, and flopping across my quilt blocks.  Tiggs pulled out all of his best tricks to get me to pay attention to him rather than take the pictures I needed for this blog post.  I did the best I could but not one single photo doesn’t include at least a small part of him (or lots of him depending on the photo LOL). =)

You’re probably wondering what the Sunny Patches block is for this month since Tiggs so kindly blocked the block completely in the first photo. =)  We are making a Sunny Churn Dash.

Here you can see (most of) my block made using Sunwashed fabrics.  That little mini churn dash in the center is so cute!  Just like with previous months, you have the option to piece the center or substitute the pieced center with a solid square.  The pattern includes both options.

You will find the Sunny Churn Dash PDF pattern here.

See, he just had to get at least a little bit of himself in every photo. =)

Also, like previous months, we’ve put together a video tutorial over on the YouTube channel that you can find here.

Sometimes, this time of the year, we might be looking for a quicker to piece fall project…maybe something small that we can use to add a little fall flair to our home as the fall months approach.  I mocked up what this block would look like in a small table topper size.  It’s 2 blocks across by 2 blocks down with 1″ sashing, a 1″ inner border, and a 3″ outer border.  It finishes at 33″ square.  I chose Cozy Up fabrics for my digital mock-up but you very well may have the fabrics you’d need already in your sewing room or scrap bin.  If not, any fall themed fabric line would be very cute!

If you are new to the Sunny Patches Block of the month, you will find the fabric requirements herean introduction post here the 1st block here,  2nd block here,  the 3rd block here,  the 4th block here, and the 5th block here.

Tiggs wants to wish you all a very relaxing weekend! =)  At this point in time, I had given up completely on getting any “non-Tiggs” photos and just sat down beside him.  He had his back foot resting on my lap and, as you can see, was a happy boy.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend too.  Thanks so much for stopping by & happy sewing! Corey

Tiggs clearly understands his place in the world and I, for one, fully support that! ❤️ I love the fall mock-up table topper!

Obviously, Tiggs is lacking attention! 😹😻. Churn Dash is my favorite block. I look forward to making this one with the cute little center.

Wonderful block! Can’t wait to get started. Love little Tiggs! I have a “Tiggs” of my own to help me sew. Thanks for the video tutorial!

Love churn dash blocks and this one is so interesting with the mini inside it! I am fairly new to quilting so I appreciate that you give sewing directions for two options and the video. Thanks for the wall hanging info 😊👏🏻. I have some cozy up fabric and I think this wall hanging will be my next project! I don’t have a lot of time to quilt so small projects are great.

  7. Aww, look at that sweet Tiggs! You can tell who rules the roost!! LOL Thanks for the new block.

  8. Jan says:

Love the block but may love Tiggs’ misbehavior even more. He is such a handsome dude.

    • Corey says:

He was so funny yesterday! He made me laugh today too because he came racing over to me when he realized I was in the room and immediately had to give me head bumps so I’d give him some pets. I don’t usually see him move that fast LOL! =)

I just discovered the churn dash block yesterday! (Confident beginner here!) I was so excited to see this posted today, and I plan to get caught up before your project is finished. This will be “amazing” according to my sweet husband. Thanks so much for sharing, Corey!

Sorry, Corey, this may have been addressed before, but is it possible to redo the number of your sunny patches block of the month because the numbers on the videos and blocks don’t seem to match what we are watching and printing out. For example, Sunny patches six is actually Sunny patches 5,etc., although I realize you have presented six blocks on your videos. I keep thinking I am missing a block, but perhaps just a reflection of my senior moments. The jelly roll block was actually block number one but was not formally named. Thanks.

    • Corey says:

This is the 6th block in the sew along but only the 5th mystery block since the jelly roll block wasn’t one of the mystery blocks. I know exactly what you mean though because I think about it every month when I post the new one. =) I don’t plan to renumber everything. At the very bottom of each post, I have a list of all of the blocks that have been released so far. As long as you have all of those blocks, you will know that you haven’t missed anything.

  15. Teresa Richardson says:

Love the churn dash block. I think I have enough of that fabric left to make it,

  16. Kathy says:

How can I find your layout for Moda Blockhead 4? I saw a video on how you pressed your seams for the borders.

  17. Elaine says:

Enjoying this project. It is the first time I have kept up with a block-of-the-month so I might actually get to finish on time. The blocks are lovely. Thank you for such a fun project!

  18. Nancy Lepard says:

Oh my goodness! Tiggs is so precious and I don’t mind a bit seeing him in your photos!! 😂 He’s making me miss having a cat. The block is cute and thank you for the extra fall block!! I have some Cozy Up fabric in my stash to make it!

  19. I didn’t have time to check this out yesterday (promised myself I would finish borders on my Bountiful and Row-along quilt tops) but now I’m sorry I missed it! I always love seeing Tiggsy and he made your Sunny Patches all happy for #CaturdaySaturday <3

Also I didn't realize you were using a FQ of a wood grain for the background of these pics! What a cool reveal Tiggsy arranged for us 🙂 Thank you Mister Tiggs you little floof.

Oh Tiggs!! My favorite local shop has a kitty named Bug. He lives next door and comes to hang out with us once in a while. He loves people and has a purr that is amazing. It’s nice to have kitty-company (even though I’m a bit allergic).

  21. Paula says:

I love seeing Tiggs! Our cat Apollo used to LOVE lying on my partially done quilts when I laid them on our bed to see how the rows were going. Sadly, we lost Apollo in January, but we do have two other cats owning us (Chiquita, a stray that came to our yard for food every day for about 2 months, and Hermes, who is a gorgeous brown tabby we got at a pet store but he originated as a rescue). They do get everywhere, especially when we don’t want them there!

  22. Karen says:

Love Tiggs and also love the fall mini quilt mock up with the block. I think I’m going to try that. Thank you.

  23. Alice says:

Tiggs is so cute. You create beautiful work. Thanks for all you do and share with the quilting community. I love your YouTube videos.
